You fight the way you train and you train the way you fight. In a life-and-death situation, you have 1 to 3 seconds to do something. And I agree with you you don't have time to do a flashy Kempo Technique. In a street fight, you win at all costs. You use anything and everything at hand to win. Once you commit to take action, even if you're surprised you don't stop until you're attacker cannot get up. Thank you for your time

Good stuff. I will add that no one realizes how fast they will gas out and fatigue when they experience an adrenaline dump. They get stronger, faster, higher pain threshold, hyper awareness. Everything you need when being attacked. The down side is the average person can completely gas out in 30 seconds or less. The adrenaline is like when a fighter jet hits the after burner, you get all this power but burn glucose 10x faster.

Dude I've been thinking about it a lot these days, there's no point in training so much if you don't keep an eye on your surroundings to use what you've trained. Excellent video.

Basically, you want to create a game that either participant (or participants) can win. A really classic self defense drill is to get one person in the class to hide a training knife somewhere on their body, and teach them subtle body language they can use to give the fact that they’re getting ready to attack away. You then pick another student to be the “hero” and ask them to guess who they think the knife attacker is. The goal is to get the students looking at body language and teach them how even subtle movements can give away someone’s intentions (or not). If they get it right, the knife attacker picks someone else, and the game begins again. If they get it wrong, the attacker draws his knife and can either a) end the game or b) start trying to attack everyone.

The best tactic, in my experience, is displayed at 11:00 because most guys cannot punch their way out of a paper bag. If you have been punching a heavy bag correctly for a year or two, somebody coming at you is in for a big surprise. Oh yes.

I like that this aspect is mentioned with some serious attention. You can throw hands beautifully. But you have to be able to adapt on the fly when things gets wild. Used to trip me up so hard until I learned to just default. The adrenal dump used to mess me up. You don't have time to think or anyone guaranteed to stop it. I didn't even notice the gloves 😵‍💫

Hoodwinked training is a good drill. Basically a Hoodwink is over the head then when its removed they have to deal with the situation as they see it. Another is Bull in the ring. Blindfolded Battle Royale basically move to a corner & keep a high guard when contact move to infight & clinch.

Getting a flaming bag o' poopie thrown at me. I hate when that happens. Seems to me meditation would help a lot with the awareness part, and generally remaining more calm and centered. Psychology also tremendously important. Absolutely, dealing with absolutely anything happening at any time and knowing how to be during that is critical. Good video, thank you.

There’s a clip in the video I have of my students performing Rory Miller’s “meet the President” game, wherein one student is acting as the President shaking hands with everyone in the room, and another is an attacker waiting to ambush with a punch. There’s a whole internet’s worth of games besides that one, that’s just one of my favorites. The point is to come up with goals for a student to accomplish, and put as many obstacles as necessary in their way.

@@noahlinhart1344 the reason I didn’t give any direct answers is because it’s hard to give games that will answer EVERYONE’s needs without just making a list of self defense games.

As a martial arts instructor myself who teaches Kung Fu, Japanese Jujitsu, and Combatives, I agree 100%. I've worked as a bouncer and security guard, fought in two Kickboxing tournaments (1st in one tournament, 2nd in the other), and have been accosted in the street and at bars as well. Out of all of those instances in the street, I've fought ONE time. The other times I've ran away, deescalated the situation, or scared the guy(s) off. The adrenaline dump hits different and making fast decisions is definitely an important skill. Great video! #subscribed

Can't agree more about this. I think you train in a gym of any combat sport, you gotta try to spar with some guy with elusive fighting style. In personal perpective, I give more time to train footwork and movement. You will be invunerable if you know how to not get hit from any range literally
