kali is the best practical weapon for street self defense. it's not a weapon that can get you arrested. And a lot of things can be used ... a broomstick, a pvc pipe, even a rolled up magazine.

You can very much get arrested for beating someone with a stick

I got an interesting bad ass/ nerdy solution to your dilemma! Ultrasabers lightsaber tonfa! Specifications for maximum damage, ultraedge heavy grade, shoto size, pointed top blade! Get the belt connector pieces (get it on either hip. Ultrasabers have 2inch polycarbonate blades that I practiced on metal flag poles without even leaving a scratch. There was a vid of a dude knocking a dude out in the hood with these. My boy pulled his sabers out when these dudes were coming up behind him on a dark Street in boston, and they ran lol. Cops dont initially think you are up to no good either

He’s also going to bring up nunchucks and talk about how tonfa are superior in every way -Icy Mike will go on Amazon, buy a dozen tonfa, then recruit Sensei Seth or someone to test them by wrestling over each one and conclude they’re all terrible except maybe one or 2 brands that the grips help you keep hold of them while covered in sweat and a 250lbs Sumo wrestler is trying to take it from you Both of which will be great videos

6:10 On that note; traditional Thai martial arts have the Mae Sawks for this very reason

Yep. The mae sok literally translates to elbow shield, which is how the tonfa is described.

I've had some fun swinging tonfas around through the air, but have never done any impact training with them. Realistically, how much force can you get out of the spinning strikes? It seems like the loose grip that allows it to spin in your hand would also mean a lot of recoil off the target on impact (as opposed to driving into/through it)... is that the case, or does it actually work out differently?
@CombatSelfDefense3 ай бұрын
It depends on the kind of tonfa you’re using. I’m using a children’s practice tonfa in the video so it swings slow and doesn’t have that much force behind it - because of how light it is. Conversely, my telescoping police tonfa is very hefty and hurts a lot with just a little spin. However by and large, I DONT advocate relying on the spinning attacks. They’re fun to do, and can work in the right context, but like all spinning moves, they’re only useful if you have a strong base of the basic strikes

While the tonfa is a useful weapon, legally you'd get the same charge if you fight but don't kill with a tonfa as you would using a knife. They're both deadly weapons in the eyes of the law, and therefore, you'll still catch an "assault with deadly weapon" charge. In court, a tonfa is seen more as a weapon that requires specialized training to learn to use, which means they'll judge you more harshly for using it. Conversely, a stick or knife is more intuitive even for untrained normies. If you also account for the lack of concealability, the tonfa just becomes a worse option overall. Better to use pepper spray and martial arts as your "less than lethal" options.
