Have you thought about the necessity of carrying multiples? Refer to Clint Smith "one is none and two is one". I would also suggest blades as a defensive tool as a means to remove any obstacles preventing accessibility when you have close encounters. Fixed blades as an absolute standard. I don't know where you're at, but yes fixed blades are legal in my area. Some ideas to keep in mind, if you haven't thought of them yet. Additionally, empty handed skills are fantastic to have as well. Every tool is simply an answer to a question and every question needs an answer.

@@jasonadams8549 The Clinch pick from Shiv Works is meant for that exact thing. It's supposed to be a knife you can get out when you can't get anything else out. Like if you're pinned to the ground, or you're being shoved up against a wall, or you're in your car, and someone is in the passenger seat shoving you into the D pillar. Getting a clinch pick out is either going to make them get off of you, and give you enough space to get a firearm out, or, they're going to get filleted. You can;t really take a clinch pick away from someone without getting cut real bad.

@Ike but no Mike It's not about whether or not the person who attacks you is trained but even if you assume that most males in America have played football or done wrestling which means 8 times out of ten they will tackle you pretty effective or sucker punch you if you watch world star you see it happen all the time and like Mike says everyone has a plan till they are punched. So to say oh I'm going to do (insert b.s. here) is not practical unless you train and even then it is a hard task you still need to be able to fight. This also excludes legal ramifications and legal issues that may be presented after the fact.

That and maze, stabbing etc. does not work in every instance but shooting worked for George Zimmerman even though he was on the ground and being pummeled. It's not bad to know some unarmed self-defense just like it's not bad to take a first aid course but not every person needs to be a doctor and it's obnoxious to ridicule them for it. Most people would rather be mugged, raped and even killed than spend ten years rolling on a fungus ridden mat so they would be considered effective by some guy who plays on people's fears to make money.

@@miesvaillanykyisyytta3252 Zimmerman actually did have some MMA training, so it probably helped him access to his weapon. And the mats at gyms and dojos are cleaned and disinfected. Shouldn't be fungus riddled unless the place sucks. The fear mongering for profit applies to everything though, guns too. People saying "I would just shoot him" are often mocking the idea of training martial arts, so I'm not really mad at returning the sentiment tbh. Very informative. Might I add one thing.. If your attacker had a knife, I think that would change everything. I personally know it would. And most knife attacks happen with out warning making it very unlikely you will get your firearm out. I know the police here have a 20 foot rule. Any closer and they wouldn't be able to draw and shoot before the person is on them. Great video. Good info. Keep up the great content

in this scenario, you will get cut anyway, but how severely, depends on your training. For police, security and others who are likely to be stabbed due to their occupation, the reasonable solution to improve the chance of survival would be stab proof/resistant armor.
@chrisjones6002
@chrisjones6002 4 жыл бұрын
The 21' "rule" was never intended as a rule. It started from some testing that was done and they found it was the minimum distance that an officer could reliably draw and get at least one shot off if charged by someone they are watching. That means you are almost certainly getting cut or stabbed at that distance unless you also move or get an immediately incapacitating hit, think central nervous system only. That's assuming you are completely focused on your attacker, carrying open and have a respectable draw to first shot time too. Pistols suck at stopping people quickly so you better be a really good shot or plan to move as it's happening.

Shane was the only one who successfully fended off the attacker & got a shot off because he was the only one who focused on using unarmed fighting/jiujitsu to subdue the attacker first. Everyone else tried to reach for the pistol first and got into a wrestling match over it (which they lost).

This is exactly the concept of randori I was taught in Aikido, you can't try to go for any specific moves off the bat, you can't 'just do this', you have to work through the situation until there's an opportunity to execute, and everything else you're doing is managing the situation in hopes of finding an opportunity. You have to tread water and hold your breath under the big waves before the trough appears and you can get your breath back type of thing. Sometimes the wave is too big and you just don't get that opportunity in time unfortunately, but that's why you train, to give yourself as much opportunity as possible. Survival is a game of probabilities. And that final line is exactly the same kind of philosophy I agree with, if we really care about self defense, why are we trying to defeat people? We want to prevent and deescalate situations ideally before they get to this level. Extreme violent responses should be a last resort, not a first... as proven by so many over reactive untrained police unjustly murdering people.

I say this because you're seen a couple of times stabbing the guy with the barrell. And in a striker fired gun like a glock if you fuck that up the gun becomes useless. Take care nice video

A few thoughts about this. First, if you escalate from ordinary force to deadly force against an unarmed person, depending where you live, you will probably end up locked up. Second, if it does warrant a deadly response, you don't have to play by the rules. Bite em, poke them in the eye, hit them in the throat. Do what you need to break free.

Craig Douglas of Shivworks is an expert of how to draw your gun when you're entangled with an attacker. It's pretty much use wrestling to get behind your attacker then draw your gun and fire. If you can't, use a knife that's carried opposite of your gun, and draw that and stab your assailant until they back off so you can draw your gun. Check him out, he has some good stuff.

Having been in my share of fights i recognize that EVERY fight goes to grappling at some point and a firearm that needs to reciprocate in that space will probably end up out of battery. I carry a .38 revolver as my backup gun for this reason. Still have to be conscious of the blast from the forcing cone if you carry a .357 and i dont like holes in me if i can avoid it. Training with a dummy gun like this is INVALUABLE for carriers but rarely practiced. Thank you Icy Mike.

The speed, ability to close distance quickly, and surprise are what make knives so “effective”. But that is thinking of it mostly from an offensive perspective, or a defensive one where it’s in your hand already and you have a “green light” that this person is someone you need to deal with. Having them tucked in places in your home is cool.. indoor range I’d take a long blade over almost anything. Anyone in your home is a threat.. but outside that they become less ideal. Problem with knife as personal carry in public is none of the big advantages of a knife benefit you. You still face speed of deployment/target recognition problem.. it’s got legal issues in that it’s too severely wounding/lethal for many situations. Requires commitment and getting in it to use effectively (but as you said, not tons of skill).

This area is frankly my wheel house doing combatives with the SQT students at Naval Special Warfare during my enlistment. (I had a wrestling and BJJ background so they kept me around as the opfor). The general principle here is spot on. Some of the movements, while natural, aren't the best. The biggest one is pressing the gun out to "chase the target". Frankly that's how you 1) jam the gun by getting it out of battery, and worse 2) start slinging rounds in space you don't want them going. Position over submission was touched on, but not hammered home. Once you have the position then draw and keep the same position before you shoot "thumb pectoral index" is what the kids say these days, its rather effective... as well as legally prudent.

How practical would it be to use your legs for that first initial encounter just to gain distance? I have a back ground in Tae Kwon Do (obviously traditional martial arts have little practicality in real life situations) but my first instinct would be to create as much distance as I could by driving front push kick to the centre mass. Even with a huge bloke who knows how to grapple that unexpected kick would be enough to push him away or cause a slight stumble so you can retreat at least 2 steps back to give you time to draw your firearm? Would love to see your thoughts and see if it would work? I maybe completely wrong but in my head it seems to have a chance of working?
@IceWyte

When I say kick I mean when he's first reaching out his arms going for that shoulder grab. Of course if he gets too close all you'll be doing is driving up your knee and making it easier to be taken to the floor. 🤣

Great vid, some concepts you just gotta physically show. Another thing that goes against the "I'd just shoot him" argument: The shots you got off on the ground where from really awkward angles with your wrist, with the gun near your own head. I would NOT have the balls to shoot like that.

One of my favorite drills during a BJJ class was when we would wrestle for a gun. One person would put a plastic gun in their belt and as soon as their partner would reach for the gun it was on. If you could get to your back and use your legs to make space that would usually give you enough room to draw and fire.

Another thing that is really scary about this is that most of those "shots" wouldn't even have gone off because when a glock (or any tilting lock semi-auto's for that matter) is barrel stuffed into someone like that, the gun isnt in battery and wont go bang when you want it to. Actually one of the few big advantages of revolvers is this scenario.
