… great video. 👍🏻 I‘am using the DS1621xs+ - it‘s a nice performance boost over the DS1621+, because you have a better processor, 10 GBit on board and two slots for cache memory. Perfect for a small video and photo business. 👍🏻 I‘am using 20 GB RAM and two 1 GB Samsung SSD 860 EVO M.2 in my NAS.

@@MariusIhlar … ah no, the 2x 1 GB is the cache memory, not the storage. I use 6x 12 TB Western Digital RED drives.

Great video, very helpful of all the nas videos for 4k video question about NAS and how to do it. Is USB even an option for editing? Does it always have to be 10gbe port?

@Jason Roberts Good day, I'm looking to move to a new Nas and, of course, going back and forth with Qnap and Synology. I've seen videos go both ways on being able to edit in real time over Nas with 10g copper. From what I'm getting online that it's not just about getting to decent speeds but rather the IOping as well. What's your take on this? I want to go to Synology to save money and put that into larger drives etc. But Qnap has Thunderbolt, which would at least let me edit on local machines in real time. Thanks in advance

1g copper was not good enough in my testing for a fast and efficient workflow. Thunderbolt would be good if you don't need multiple computers to connect or access the NAS from local network or remotely

@@JasonRobertsVideo 1g copper may be good for HD content, but for 4k, I would think it would be lacking. I figured the thunderbolt option may be good, at least for the main office computer. At least one machine would be able to get full bandwidth. Multiple computers I will need 2-3 but not all at the same time for video editing.

Amazing video! I wonder if it is possible to edit edit 4k videos REMOTELY. Like having all the footage content in the NAS at the studio, but edit on a cheap laptop on my home. Are NAS capable of that?? thanks!

That's a great idea,, probably not though because the NAS would have fast access the data but would need fast graphics card, cpu ram, etc to do the actual editing. You could have your editing computer and nas connected in the office and then securely remote connect to your editing computer from your cheap laptop and remotely control the editing

great video. is it the local network inside your house that needs to be 10gb, or the actual broadband connection? For example, I only have a 1gb connection here in the UK, but this is probably the best you can get right now, as 1gb has only rolled out last year. so probably we won't see 10gb for a few good years. But no one is stopping me to upgrade the home network internal wiring and everything to 10gb, I guess. I don't know.

Hi to access it externally from another location then a faster internet speed will def help. You would have to set up shared/remote folders on the NAS - with passwords/security of course.

Is this being imported from the NAS I cannot seem to find the option to get to my network drive on Premiere pro? I want to read from the NAS directly Surely this is possible without copying footage back to the computer?

Hi Walt, you don't have to copy footage back to the computer, you can use it directly off the NAS, you just need to know the path to the where the NAS is on your network - On a PC you can go to File Explorer, go to "This PC" and then expand down "Network Locations" and you should see you NAS on your network

10Gbit is NOT required. I have an 18 Core CPU with 128 GB RAM and a 1080Ti. Native Rendering is possible without any issues. But the destination folder of the rendered video is on one of my onboard SSDs!! 😄

Is the souce video on the NAS? Is it 4k? Is it 10-bit high bitrate? Are you using multiple video files at the same time? All of these will affect the need for 10Gbit

@@JasonRobertsVideo I use 4K simultaneously with 1GBit Ethernet. I have no issues at all. The Videos have a bitrate of approx. 90000 kBit/s and are 59.94FPS / The Sound is 256kBit/s Stereo with 48000 kHz Bitrate. For my workflow, it is perfect. My CPU (18C) has approx. 50°Celsius during rendering. GPU rendering doesn't work in Da Vinci Resolve, I always get the error message "Can't find the appropriate codec", although I have every codec installed. Hope my report is sufficient for you. The destination file (output, save file) is on my fast SSD, BTW.

Here's internet stuff ----> 1 gigabit (Gb) is equal to 125 megabytes (MBs), so a gigabit network offering a speed of: 1 Gbps could transfer 125 megabytes of data per second. "Most middle end 4k cameras shoot 85-95 megabits per second. That's an average of 11.25 Megabytes per second. (Similar to Daniel) That's for a highly compressed 8 bit mpeg, For a raw codec with deeper color spaces or goes up exponentially, up to 270 megabytes per second and 16 gigs per minute for 4K at 24 FPS." and that is for 1 video, multiply that by how many camera angles you have. Proxys are nice to use too....

90 % of video editing setups don’t need a NAS. Just set up a DAS. Direct Access Storage. Directly hooks to your system, no Ethernet adapters and you’re not slaved to your network. Plus you have to pay extra for the bandwidth requirements The only reason one needs a NAS Is if you need to access data from the road

What do you mean "extra bandwidth requirements"? What about if you have multiple editors? What about if you want advanced auto backup features (e.g. to the cloud or another NAS at a different location? All of these are additional reasons for a NAS. You are correct that a DAS is a simpler setup however.

I used my qnap nas to hold my working files but when that would not power on and qnap wanted to charge me 90% of the cost of the unit to "repair" it I was left with nothing but external backup disks to access my work. I now use the replacement unit I shamed Qnap into providing only as a fast backup and use my local workstation as a workspace for current projects. Synology have been as flaky in the past about hardware issues so the truth is dont trust your current work to a Unix filesystem that cannot be transferred to your pc in an emergency, use local disks you can replace easily and use the nas as a second copy location.

Yes a NAS is not really a "backup", there are many workflows to choose from, if it works for you then that's what matters, just be mindful that a true backup strategy involves multiple copies and offsite copies.

@@JasonRobertsVideo My nas really is a backup, no denying it, it joins my external disks and cloud backups as a place to store files that need to be restored in case of data loss. Far easier to change a faulty component on my pc than my nas, when your nas goes down you are looking at weeks before a fix, Im just suggesting that people proceed with caution using a nas as a working drive, Im happier with my working files on local 3GB/sec nvmie drives and backing up to my 900MB/sec NAS (and other places).

I dont get why u use 3T HDD, u could have three 6~8T with SHR-1, get something like 12T~16T, and I would go for a single HDD more than 12T, If i use 4 HDD, thats 36TB in total. wouldnt it be nicer
