With all those back-and-forth tempo moves, I found this puzzle especially fascinating. As one could guess, I didn't come up with the solution. This one is well above my pay grade, but still very satisfying.

Elegant solution! Unfortunately I completely failed to find it!! 😞

This is a symmetric position, except for the a-file that has no counterpart. As a chess problem has only one solution, the key move with the queen must be either go to the a-file (out of symmetry) or go among the e-file (symmetry axis). As Qa4 is obviously wrong and the 7th rank must be protected, we might find the solution.

So, the queen slides side to side like she is dancing with the king 😊

Step 1. White King moves left or right. Automatic check. Step 2. Black King moves left or right. Step 3. White Queen moves up to Check mate.

That's what I thought too. But it doesn't work if the king comes to the 7th rank.

If the a-pawn is removed initially then it would be an instant zugzwang after 1.Qe5!😂

Why is it, the key move, is the one I don't see? Q to e5 for this example.

It was difficult because Qa8+ being checkmate is very unusual !!

At 4:56 you better be a GM if you think that's an easy win. It's tricky to get the pawn and there is no forced mating sequence in less than 25 moves - even with perfect play.

I know this video is not the newest but am I mistaken for thinking I can always force a draw with black? After the pawn is out of play and I am under Zugzwang with black I play a check with one rook. As I get discover checked I move the king next to the other rook (not the one that gave the check) and I can always dance around the queen with my king moving and putting my rook in between whenever I can to never be able to get mated. Pls prove me wrong, my head is exploding

You mean to say that you can hold with king + one rook against the king + queen? The queen can actually win, but it is far from trivial. You can find youtube videos that show how to do that.

The solution looks like a wasted move. But of course when you move your king you get a check.

as nice as it is, its still difficult to win with queen and king vs a single rook and king! (I know there are many videos out there but haven't found one that is easy for Q and K vs R and K end game)

Why would the rook have more power than the queen?
@wallysullivan9315
@wallysullivan9315 Ай бұрын
@@EarthSurferUSA No one said the rook has "more power", the queen can do everything the rook can and more, your opponent will never straight up win but your oppenent can fight for a draw IF you dont know the proper technique. The only way to lose is to blunder horrendously

On both those moves black can check on c6 with his rook. Our king needs to back down to 5th rank and he plays the other rook to g6. His rooks blocks our king and all we have left is eternal checks and a draw

Can’t you just Qa4 then Kf6? Then both rook checks are covered.
