It’s so true. And I think the Joel’s confidence around the dog and reading their behaviour helps instill some trust back to the owner in regard to their dog. That helps the owner to be more confident, which the dog feeds off etc.

Besides ACTUALLY giving practical advice and not just a tease for selling the course or paid content, he shows how dog training is imperfect. So many other trainers inadvertently make struggling owners looking for help feel like they and their dog are failures for not looking like the perfect dog in the video m

My dog cannot listen to other dogs bark. At 30% through this video, using the tips, we nipped it in the bud, and he watched it with me. He's really reactive to other dogs, and he went from anxious to calm, watching the 2 dogs play.
@Texas24028 күн бұрын
If you have a chance, try to cultivate meetings with nuetral, non barking dogs across a chain link fence. I've done this with my rescued stray who was TERRIFIED of barking dogs and scared of quiet dogs (chsee on the street, most likely). You can reach out to dog groomers, vets, dog daycare places to find such dogs or hang out near a dog park or dog walking path when it's off peak hours and talk to people to ask if their dog is a barker or not before allowing your dog to meet through a fence. Always stay between your dog and whatever might scare or trigger the dog. It helps the dog feel safe and allows them to see you and your reaction (ie, calm no aggression) to the new or scary thing. Meeting between a fence allows sniffing without the danger of a bite or attack. It helps the dog realize that other dogs aren't mean or scary or something to attack. I've actually gotten my formerly terrified dog swung a bit too far the other way where she now wants to investigate and play with every dog we see. I mean, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised the first time she was standing calmly watching a pitbull barking at her with a deep and aggressive voice as if just thinking the same thing I was, "what's he going on about?" except then she started whining because she wanted to go greet the dog and play. I also would be lying if I didn't say I also felt super proud of both me and my dog when the other owner became flustered by his dog's incessant barking and pulled him away. We were out in public and I wasn't trying to antagonize the dog. Good luck. Try not to get frustrated at yourself or your dog.
@studioafkai28 күн бұрын
@@Texas240 Really appreciate this! My dog craves social interaction, sometimes aggressively, and sometimes he whines because he really wants to meet others. Even times when other dogs are barking at him through the fence, he will still be happy, and curious. I think his neutering in 2 weeks will help greatly, then I definitely will try the methods above!
@Texas24028 күн бұрын
@studioafkai Hi, good luck! Actually, my biggest "breakthrough" was with a dog that the owner described as "aggressively friendly". But, it was a small Chihuahua terrier mix. My dog was literally hiding up on top of a picnic table that we'd been practicing her "up!" on before the guy and dog walked over. Fortunately, it was summer and the little dog tired itself out yapping and my dog came down off the table (I was at the fence talking to the other guy) to investigate the now quiet dog. Finally, when both were showing play behavior, paws out, body dip, he came into the fenced area. It was probably the first time my dog had ever actually sniffed another dog. She looked visibly confused about why it wasn't trying to chase or attack her (mind you my dog was about 3 times the size and weight of the little "scary" dog). Soon, they were chasing each other and my dog was being careful not to run over the little one. When the little terrier tired out first and splayed out in the shade, my dog was standing over her as if guarding her. It was probably her first "dog friend" and a really huge breakthrough for my dog not being afraid of barking dogs. I realize my situation is opposite of yours in type of reactivity, but wanted to share because that yappy dog was also aggressively friendly and found out that being quiet got it what it wanted, play with the other dog. So, it IS possible. And, I think just a huge part of it is getting a single good experience of being able to realize that they don't need to bark and pull to get to the other dog.

@@lucygoosy819 it looks like some sort of hound from the body and ticking in the coat. Catahoulas are pretty distinct looking especially the Merle colored one. Mister Beckman, Id like to ask your opinion on a problem Im having. We have a 11 year old dutch shepard female, a 7 year old chihuahua male, a 7 month old dogo argentino and a 10 week old dogo argentino, both females. We got the 10 week old a few days ago and when we brought her in, she was just exploring, ran into our 7 month who snapped at her. I layed her on her side to let her know to behave and that I absolutly dont like that behaviour. Shes great with other dogs and our older dogs, shes very respectfull and absolutly not dominant. 30 min after the pup arrived, the 7 month old was chewing on a ball and the 10 weeks just passed her and the 7 month old did a sort of attack, wounding the 10 week old above the right eye, but nothing serious. The pup cried for 5 min and was shaking like a leaf for almost 30 min. I only checked her wound and than ingnored the crying and shaking, not to reward her being scared. Again I putted the 7 month on her side right after she did it. And some people say punish the 7 month for biting the 10 week old when the 10 week old doesnt do anything wrong like stealing a toy, or biting. Others say let them figure it out themselves. But the 7 month old is passed the 30 kilos and shes around 57 cm high. So not a small puppy. And she has adult teeth, so Im not planning to let them fight it out. In my opinion, the 7 month old is to young to punish a way smaller puppy. The last days the 7 month old didnt do anyrhing against the 10 week old, exept grawling al little when the both lay close together and when the 10 weeks takes another position and touches the 7 month old. They I say HEY, behave yourself. I tested how she reacted when I touch her at that moment and she does nothing. What would you do in this situation? Let them figure it out maybe risking to get the 10 week old wounded, or would you punish the 7 month because she doesnt have to play boss, because Im the boss/alpha. Thats how I see it and in my former 3 dog pack I never had issues. But then I didnt had 2 puppies of different ages
@rptrick794 ай бұрын
That's a lot of dog(s) coming soon when they're both grown. 2 females, same strong breed. At a minimum you have to protect the smaller one and rule the roost. It may be breed/sex based being both females. I'd for sure not stop what you're already doing or shits gonna get outta control at some point.

Rpatrick is right, you may need to take stronger measures for corrections. You can always schedule a 15 minute Zoom session with Joel. Being 7 months old, it is the time when it's easier to correct this. I wouldn't wait any longer before you get Joel's input though. He has hundreds of videos that help people for free and he customizes methods for people for a living. Way, way, way back when he used to have a podcast (I'm dating myself here) he used to take callers' questions and answer them

@@rptrick79 Things are going great atm actually. I punished the 7 months for agressive behaviour and now when she doesnt like to have the smaller around, she only growls once and than she goes to another place to be left alone. And if the small one chases her, I grab her and put her on her place. But they play allot the last week and when I tell them to stop they stop right away. So the problem is solves because of me acting like a alpha and not letting puppies fight for their dominance

We leave the house the way you teach. Doing frequent checks. But after we are out the gate he stops understanding the corrections. We go back in ok. He knows he is not allowed to take a step without me. Ok. We try leaving again. Again, after we leave the property he forgets what correction means. This is going on for months now. We cannot go for a walk. If we go I just end up doing corrections the whole way and 1 second later he forgets. I get so frustrated and he is a little dog right? But he pulls so hard and no correction helps. I might as well yeet him back 2 feet. His back paws end up blody he still doesn't get it. I am afraid I will cause damage to his neck and he still doesn't get it. Inside the house he is fine. He leaves the property fine. Doesnt't take a step without me but as soon as both of us are out he loses it. So we go back in. For months he isn't getting enough excercise because we cannot go on walks. What do I do? Rehome? Put down? I tried multiple local dog trainers and they cannot help us. This is no life for a dog.

Not to sound totally brash to your situation but, it doesn't matter what you learn from Joel's videos or from anywhere else if you don't practice what you've watched/learned. Especially with a dog like what I assume is a Belgian Malinois? Depending on lineage and temperament it sounds like you may be in way over your head , where as with a more "mild" one you'd just be in over your head. Practice what you can from what you've learned or hire a trainer is the card youve drawn with that breed. Maybe both.

Yeah, a dog biting an owner or even a welcomed guest is definitely not acceptable. Joel did upload a video earlier this year of a dog that touched its teeth to the owner in a similar way where it didn't "bite" but it was startling and he said it was because the dog was so over stimulated and restrained it was not an aggressive move, but more like a "I have to release my excitement" kind of reaction. I'm paraphrasing, but it seems to be what happened here. The dog does have a history of biting guests, so they just needed to control the dogs impulses. I love to watch Joel use and explain different techniques that work

@@Real_MAGA_DAD You're welcome! I'm glad you found this channel. He has hundreds of extremely helpful videos that cover a wide range of problems that people face with unwanted dog behavior. Even this video you can see that a dog that has been corrected properly is much happier and so are the owners

You can't get a cure in 1 hour. It takes time to help aggression issues.

There was a reduction, yes? He never said "cure". You did. All of the chicken treats in this video you should be proud of him. of all the positive reinforcement oozing out

Christine, you once offered a pseudo apology to Joel for being who you are. I guess that was disingenuous because here you are...lol I have screenshots of your comments on your favorite doggie psychology channels that never solve problems, where you just flat out say what you think about Joel. Not sure why you troll his channel, since you hate him so much. (Your own words)

In short you probably can't totally. What you need to do is change the dogs association with that particular neighbor. Unfortunately it sounds like they are a-holes so it'll be tough. Dogs weirdly remember the type of person, man, woman,child, white, purple, black whatever a lot of the time. You'll likely notice they react similarly to similarly looking people and or situations. Desensitization and habituation to those things is what you need to work on. Good luck

Man…. I mean, I know you gotta do what you gotta do I guess, but, it really does stink when KZbinrs get so big that they stop showing the things that got them there. 🫤🤷🏻♀️

I think this comment MAY be directed at OTHER dog trainers. Beckman shows us the good stuff and the doggie psychology behind his approach. AND he has Prince. Which dog trainers do you think "hold back" and don't show us the good stuff? Maybe all those "positive only" BS "dog trainers" that don't show their actual corrections and don't deal with difficult breeds/dogs? Beckman has dealt with badly behaved Belgian Malinois dogs, among others. The outcomes were surprising!
