Have never seen anybody ride over the Paskapoo Big Rock, usually its used as a quarter pipe. The steep side you rode down is no joke. On a studded fatbike? Wow!

Fat biking on ice covered lakes is pretty popular in Sweden. That way you can explore islands which are inaccessible in the summer, unless you have a boat of course.

Thanks! I'm from Calgary originally and it's fun to come back for the occasional visit to remember how cold it gets and why I moved away in the first place :p

@@ddangerousddave yeah it was cold over Christmas and New Years that’s for sure. -25 is usually my limit but when it hit the -40 with the wind I stayed in. Next time you are back in Calgary drop a note can do a group ride somewhere.

Fat biking is great! It's not a substitute for dirt, but all the guys who I've introduced to the sport here say something like "it's a lot more fun that I expected it to be". And it exposes technical weaknesses mercilessly. It's great seeing someone get out on some steep/technical stuff on youtube.

Fat Bikes are a blast! Our trails here in Rutland, VT get groomed and the city is so fun play'n on the snow banks, like you are! Gave me smiles to see you hit'n them!

wow... this is really cool. Looks like a lot of fun. You never cease to amaze. Lengthy recollection below; I remember when I first started trucking and I drove through Edmonton and it was -40f/c and I had to pick up a trailer with frozen landing gear.... I had to get out of my truck and bang on the legs and handle a few times then rush back into the truck. I couldn't handle the cold. It doesn't matter how much you wear it goes straight through. The first breath I took was painful and all the hairs on my legs felt like needles. Idk how people live in those conditions. I'm sure you adapt but being from Arizona it was insane. I had to shut down and sleep outside of town and all I could see was white in all directions and freezing fog that made the sun look like the moon. It was like I was in a dream and very sureal. I almost died that night as we had very bad equipment and the heater turned off while I was asleep. I woke up and felt so heavy and tired, I closed my eyes again to go back to sleep and then realized that I could see my breath and it hit me. "Wait... I shouldn't be able to see my breath"... I opened my eyes back up and it took all the strength I had and it was painful. But I sat up and hit the on button on the heater. It said it was 7 degrees in the truck when I hit it. I fell back down on my back and just shivered until it heated back up...

Interesting lil story! I’m from 450km north of Edmonton, so hearing people’s first accounts of true cold is always entertaining- glad you got your heat going on your night in the cold! Anytime the temperature goes over 30C we wonder how the heck people survive in places like Arizona haha!

Are used to ride up in Tahoe when I stay at my sisters during Christmas. No trails were groomed, although I would ride on the road with my cross country Hardtail. 2.229 inch wheels would just dig down to hard pack and if it wasn’t so deep I had no problem riding. But it was mostly on the road where the snow had been packed. It is a lot of fun but I agree dirt is the better medium

I was talking to someone not too long ago saying that fatbiking was pretty fun on trails (in southwest Manitoba) this time of year (even with the -30s we've been having), and was recommending that I get one. I'm not getting one (baby steps and all), but it is cool to watch what could be possible. Maybe in a few years I'll consider it.

You don't NEED a front suspension fork, but it really helps when doing stairs :) That said, I'm running Shimano XT breaks in Ottawa and they've been ok to -20C. Haven't noticed any poor breaking performance, but yeah, DOT 5.1 does have a better freezing point than mineral oil. Love fat biking. It's PROPER fun.
