Can you play games off of a NAS? Games are so large these days that you can very quickly use up all available disk space on your PC or laptop. We’ll look at both game load times and FPS benchmarks while running games stored on a NAS to see how feasible it is.

This definitely helped me decided. I like having a small computer and by small i mean my computer is honestly just a little bit longer than this NAS but the same heights and width. I cant fit any more drives to it because of space constraint and having a NAS would benefit me so much more and free up a ton of space for me.

I edit all my videos off NAS 😎 it can chug a bit so I use premiere to make 720p proxies that save to my NVMe storage, a 720p preview that plays of SSD is plenty for me then when I export it just uses the big files on the NAS, so a bit slower with the network transfers back and forth but not too bad.

I have 4x6TB Western Digital Gold in a My Cloud Pro Series PR4100 and have installed all my games there. I have the 4 discs in RAID 0 mode. I don’t care about redundancy at all. (Now if I had maps to ancient gold mines then I’d be all redundancy, but I don’t!) The whole thing is simply singing! My local SSD has a negligible performance gain. I don’t think anyone would care about 2 or 3 seconds here and there. Very happy! In terms of FPS, no difference at all. I have 64Gb of RAM and assuming that a large chunk just loads into memory, so all good there. As the NAS enclosure has dual LAN ports, I have used link aggregation to enhance the throughout.

Thanks for the review! Not only for boot times, but also for the 1% FPS. I really thought about some frame spikes, but everything looks pretty great. The question I have, do you know, is it possible to save a game folder to a NAS, and use it by multiple people, or will it just crash or be unstable?

You probably can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Some games may have issues with writing files. Personally, I just copy the game over for each device I use it on and keep the NAS version updated

Great video as always Jarrod! I was wondering if you could help me decide between an msi gs65 (8th gen i7, gtx 1070 and 16gb ram) or a lenova legion y540(9th gen i7, RTX 2060, 8gb ram). It sucks that in the UK i cant find a 16gb lenova but would i still be able to play overwatch while running youtube in the background with only 8gb ram? Thanks in advance :D PS. I was also contemplating the Dell g5 5590 and Asus TUF Fx505d but the reported thermal issues on the dell and 120Hz monitor on the asus detered me. Do you think that a 120Hz monitor is even that much more noticeable compared to a 144Hz?

Thanks, I guess it depends on if you prefer a thinner machine (GS65) or the y540, which isn't too thick but about average. Based on my own testing the 1070 is a little better than the 2060 but they are quite close, there would also be minimal difference between those two CPUs. You can of course upgrade memory later, but dual channel vs single channel (2 or 1 sticks) would make a bigger difference to game performance compared to either of the slight CPU/GPU differences. The y540 does also have the advantage of disabling Optimus which will give it a little boost in some games though. 120Hz is fine, can't say I really notice the difference with 144.

One great use case that I'll probably use gaming on a NAS for in the future is small mini itx PC builds as often those cases have limited drive support The case I have my eyes on now (lian li q58) only has 1 single 3.5 inch drive bay and 2 2.5 inch drive bays, technically 3 since you can use the 3.5 inch drive bay for 2.5 inch drives, and even the m.2 storage is often limited on mini itx boards, at best 2 m.2s So that's 2 m.2 slots, 2 2.5 inch drive bays, and 2 3.5 inch drive bay If money wasn't a concern then that wouldn't be a problem, but I have a goal to never have to reinstall a game again, to never run out of storage A NAS I the only way I could do that with a mini itx case without spending a fortune or dropping down to 5400rpm 2.5 inch harddrives, especially since my steam library is up to about 3 TBs and it's only been 2 years since I moved to PC, with games constantly getting bigger and me having more disposable income I can easily see that getting to the 15-20 TB range in 2-5 years, and while 20 TB drives are staring to exsit they cost a God damn fortune

Yeah drives can quickly add up, but there are lots of different storage options from 1tb - 16tb. You don't technically have to use NAS grade drives either, it's just highly recommended if you run it 24/7 and store important data, there are people that use entry level cheaper options but it's not without additional risks.

Most games we tested here in the office worked rather well. One game in particular just didn't like the NAS at all. That was Bioshock Infinite. It depends.

Thanks man, I am getting an Synology DS1817+ 8 bay diskless for movies, tv shows, backup, and cctv. Was wondering about gaming end to throw it on, all with 6tb hdds and slowly upgrade to 16tb as needed... Well to be fair, most people are still most likely using Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is just starting to come to devices like smartphones, so at this point it’s more of an optional thing to have. Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) I think is still enough for most people so long as multiple (7-10) devices aren’t connected to it all at once.

I guess compared to gigabit ethernet, wifi 4 is just meh, though I did test it in my old nas video a couple years ago. Still waiting for 6 to fully standardize before I upgrade, then I will start doing wifi tests in the laptop reviews!

All you should need to do is map the NAS in windows as a network location and then set the game launcher to check that location for the game.

if two people are using the same nas/ssd and playing the same game, does it impact or stress the nas enough to cause some sort of delay or bug ? and does a ssd on a nas or directly connected on the router always stays on? does it shorten the life time?

Unless you're doing the cheap way with using your router as NAS. It's expensive. Yes, you can actually make it cheap, but I'm staying with expensive. For a NAS, you use an HDD/SSD that's made for NAS. Not something you put in your daily pc. You also shouldn't use the same game files with another player. I don't even want to know what would happen to the save files. That means you should separate your files inside the NAS. Yes, you absolutely have to install the same game TWO TIMES on your NAS. Your NAS is only used if it's used. It depends, what raid system you're using and how fast your lan is. If you go for a stripped system, you shouldn't feel a difference. Otherwise, you should make sure you install the game on two different hard drives. Even if you only use a single hard drive, it will only impact you if both of you are on the loading screen. In that case, I would go for an SSD. You can actually configure your NAS to make your HDD sleep or always be active. NAS drives are made to never stop. You will kill your NAS drive if you stop them. If you want your drives to stop, don't buy NAS drives. YOU WANT A NAS DRIVE. Don't tell me you're going to put normal drives into your NAS. If you use your router as a NAS, you will probably use an external hard drive. You can't configure it whether it should go to sleep, but external hard drives normally sleep automatically if not used. It's stressful for hard drives to spin up and down all the time. Consider going for SSD.

I didn't try, but if there is an app to set it up to cache DNS records it could work ok it its locally caching and you configure your PC/devices to point to it for DNS.

I've never tried 20 simultaneous PCs. I guess we'd have to do such an experiment. :P But I think our newer Lockerstor 10 Pro with a Xeon chip inside would probably be better suited for that.

I have a question I have the 2 bay version to that and I have a 10gbe port built in to my board. The problem I’m having is when I connect lan one to my pc I get really good speeds but I can’t connect to the Nas locally with my laptop unless I put the lan one into my switch and with lan 2 in my pc it only gets 118.

When you connect to the NAS directly your laptop won't get assigned an IP unless you have it set up to offer DHCP, you will need to manually set an IP on the same subnet that the NAS is using to talk to it.

Jarrod'sTech This thing is frustrating I still can’t figure it out. The only way it works correctly with Plex is if lan one is directly connected to my switch. If I do it that way I don’t get the 10gbe speed when I make a shared folder that I want. If I put lan one directly into my pc and lan 2 into the switch the speed is good but plex wont work just on the nas my pc needs to be turned on. I’m not good with network interface on this thing. There’s no videos on how to do this properly either.

You can use WiFi, but load times will probably be slower if it's slower than Gigabit ethernet. If WiFi speed is similar, then similar difference, just depends on the connection.

I think that 10Gig home network is still expensive, and you must have good router or switch with 10Gig switch chip, for example rb5009 have 10G switch chip, because when you dont have this chip, your network, will be unstable. Wifi also must have 2000mbps, when you can get 1000mbps both directions..... ( Download, upload ) I mean that gig is still good, and you can set up for example qos on router, for streaming from nas, for exaple to 900 mbps, when you have only gig switch chip in router. I mean, that nas can connect to 10G switch, you can use 5e cables only for gig connections, and other traffic goes from the router, Qos.

Yes, but, games require a mix of sequential and random performance. SATA III does provide 6 gbps though.

2.5Gbe is kinda a waste of time since switches with it are very limited. Sure you could buy an adapter for 1 end...but why? Just stick with products that have 10Gb since it's standard

@@sagetechnology4913 We do have 10GbE NAS devices. We tend to avoid SFP+ because it's not as widely used as 8p8c. Especially if we are talking about use by gamers. 10GbE also needs proper CPU support and SSDs and that can get quite expensive and/or power hungry. The NAS featured is a 0-waste NAS. Most games are more than happy running from a hard drive while the NAS provides an Ethernet port that is the same speed as the hard drives inside providing little-to-no bottlenecks.

@@JarrodsTech ah yes its fine, but you should also say the disadvantages of using SMB launching games on it, after all if you saturate a 1gigE connection you potentially using about 20-30% cpu usage on single core. might be worse on some lower end CPU and that still depends on the NIC that they use on their mobo as well (if its crap realtek, rip CPU usage. of course the large overhead of the SMB is not present in iSCSI if not very minimal. but dont mind my random rambling about this, its just my OCD in netoworking while watching this video just triggers me so much

Depends what it's for. For gaming the GX701 with G-Sync will most likely perform better. Battery life, Thunderbolt 3 and the 4K screen with the Aero would be better for content creation, plus normal location for the keyboard/touchpad.

A cheaper way to do this is to get a raspberry pi *4 with at least 2gb and a bung of usb 3.1 gen 2 to sata adapters and do it for less than 100 not 750 (not counting the drives on either price)

Probably, haven't tried and wouldn't recommend it, one machine may lock files and modify them could cause conflicts, worth a try but I'd probably copy them to multiple folders. NAS might even let you deduplicate the data and only write changes from each machine.
