I just graduated with a BA in Art History and now work full time in DC ( in real estate). I hope to go to get a master but an art history degree gives you so many skills beyond just knowledge of art. You gain writing experience, critical thinking skills and the ability to translate your thoughts into words and speech. You learn how to argue and get your point across along with an intuitive mind that is made to think in new and creative ways. F anybody who tells that you won’t get a job with a art history degree !!!

A BA in art history that included study abroad and travel makes you a great choice for a travel agent. You have a grasp of history, culture, and art that people are looking for. I just got a job as one and as travel is picking up again it's paying really well. :) (And being a travel agent some agencies will actually send you on work vacations to amazing locations to get experience in places you haven't visited. I'm going on a week long cruise in the Bahamas next year, all expenses paid! We get to swim with dolphins!)

I have a friend with a history degree that now has a job in medical copywriting. He said that job just wanted you to have any bachelor's degree. I feel like there are probably quite a few jobs like that out there. I took art history one semester because it was one of the only classes left for me to choose from. I was dreading it but it ended up being one of my absolute favorite classes I've ever taken so far. So much so that I want to major in it! My friend, this video and all of these comments discussing the different skills you get from this degree are pushing me to go back to school to pursue this.

Choloe, You are so good in explaining all of these things in art history. I am going back for an associates in the major, I come from a social science background. BA in Politicial Science/MA in International Relations and also BA in Foreign Language. The veteran administration approved a post covid rapid job training and well art history is one of the majors. I took one art history class in my local community college and it was good. I am planning in combining this major with my other degrees as I have been abroad and you see art all over the place and its nice to know a little bit about the history it makes a big difference. For Art history you can look into your local county for jobs. I have found one in my current county and it does say to have worked with children and public speaking, I have both. In addition I am a Junk Journal maker...so the major will come in handy. Thanks!

Love the video! Fellow Bruin Art Historian 🐻🎨☺️ I agree with all this fantastic advice! Just to share my story, I did an art history BA knowing I probably wouldn’t work in the art world. I started working in the entertainment industry before I transferred to UCLA. Art history informs my perspective of visual narrative that is slightly different than my peers who went to film school. The curation planning and museum studies I did has allowed me to think about the function of live theatrical spaces where I have worked, which has opened up an understanding of marketing needs. The list goes on and on. Admittedly, I do often get the “why did you study art history?” side eye quite a bit, some people have a reductive idea of what art history is; just never doubt or apologize for the skills you know you worked hard to cultivate.

Studying Art History is incredibly fascinating but it is very difficult to find work with it you can work in a museum or work as a guide but those are relatively low paid jobs the real good jobs such as museum director curator or art history teacher at higher or adult education limited and everyone wants that job when a place becomes available there are at least 10 candidates that is the problem with this study.

Hi Chole! Thank you for the great advice in your video. I am graduating with a BA in Art History & Econ from UC Davis in a month, but now I face the dilemma of making a choice: I got into the Courtauld (London, UK) for their grad program, and I also received a job offer (PR/Corporate Communication) in the States. I was very sure about grad school but not anymore :/ Would you suggest working before getting an MA? I don't plan to do a Ph.D./research/curation as of now. I am more interested in the business/marketing side of the art industry. Is it hard to go back to school after working for 1-2 years?

A great entry level career with a History of Art degree is Human Resources in the Government Sector: all you need to say in the interview is just like a work of art, the life cycle of an employee has provenance (onboarding, salary history, benefits history, evaluations, personnel conduct, et. al.) With my Art History degree, I had a great career in HR for seven years and transitioned to Transportation Administration. So, having an Art History degree has some benefits: an entry level job in HR or government with good salaries, health benefits and government pensions for retirement. So, don’t settle for less by being pigeonholed into a career in the Art world or the museum circuit, let alone an unpaid internship where you’re witness to scholars patting each other on the back or giving each other a rimjob through essays and lectures. It takes years of hard work and perseverance after college, so don’t assume that you’re “special” 🦄 🌈. Learn where and how to land and never settle for less.

Hi! I had a question what does your day to day look like? Or do you like know what most art history majors do throughout the day?
@ChloeLandis
@ChloeLandis 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Noemi! great question. it really depends on the student and what they do outside of the classroom. So usually I had 1-2 classes per day and a few hours of reading, research and writing papers everyday (art history is a reading/research heavy major). I worked throughout school in multiple internships and jobs that filled my days. Some are in clubs, organizations, etc. It really depends on the student and what they want to get out of their college experience. Usually my evenings were spent doing homework with friends. Hope that helps!
