i do definitely feel intimidated to get into this field because it seems like an upper class thing. it’s nice that you addressed that a little bit. i’m just hoping that if i were to get the degree in a few years that it’ll have become more accessible

So many people feel the same, and it is such a shame because art history really is for everyone. A lot of work needs to be done to break down barriers for people to get into studying art history. What do you think could help to make you feel more comfortable looking at art?

its a very real thing. something myself and so many of us are working really hard to fix (for me its through museums). its slow work but its happening. a lot of it can be just knowing internally that you belong. a lot will not change if individuals dont stake their right to being in the field, regardless of their background

Studying Art History is incredibly fascinating but it is very difficult to find work with it you can work in a museum or work as a guide but those are relatively low paid jobs the real good jobs such as museum director curator or art history teacher at higher or adult education limited and everyone wants that job when a place becomes available there are at least 10 candidates that is the problem with this study.

Hello! Thank you so much for sharing your experience here! I actually got an associates for anthropology with a focus on archaeology, had to take a couple years off due to some health issues, frankly going on digs and tons of travel and inconsistent work within archaeology is no longer really realistic with my health, however one of my FAVORITE classes was on art history, and I’m an artist myself, I’m so excited to be switching to an art history major and moving my anthropology credits to be a minor! I feel like it’s a way for me to get the best of both worlds for my passion, thank you so much this is so exciting to finally see a channel around art history majors :)

Great job explaining what art history class are like! I teach art history and get a lot of these questions and concerns from my students. I totally agree with you about class layout, Art history being Eurocentric (but hopefully changing), and feeling like an outsider sometimes. Thanks!

I do not think museums are a rich persons privilege, because I grew up poor and went to museums every weekend because they were free in Washington DC. I also know from living in DC, Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago, that kids have more opportunities to visit museums for free, and city kids are mostly minorities-like myself and poor.

I think it really depends on the area. I also lived in DC and had a similar experience but also grew up in LA and now work here in museums. There are a few free museums, but parking is atrocious and can be hard to get to. Unfortunately in the recent years, prices have gone way up. LACMA for instance is now $20 and parking is $20. Now I run a field trip program and see many schools can't come for field trips because they can't afford transportation. Unfortunately just how its become in the past few years

I’m in uk and debating on taking art history after I finish my photography course. My choices are for art history in Wales, or I can study it in Scotland along with Celtic anglo Saxon studies. If I go to university is still up for discussion as I’ve just started a two year course and I’m 19 🥲

Hello, I am so glad I found your page. Please I have a question. I want to do my Masters in Art History (MA) in the U.S.... but I did my Bachelor's degree in Education, in Nigeria. Please can I still apply for Masters in Art History using my BA in Education? I really look forward to your response. Thank you.

Im 32 and my dream was always to get an art history degree. Been in IT for over 5 years, and I'm so scared to start in a new field. Getting a proper degree seems so scary to me, so i thiught of starting with an online course on Renaissance, Christie's offers one. Someone please cheer me up 😂😅 am I on the right path?

its never to late to start! but first I'd ask yourself these questions: what is your end goal? what do you want your career to look like? what lifestyle do you want? do you really want to change your career or is it an intellectual interest that you could fulfill with courses? if you want further personalized advice, I do offer consultations that you can find on my website chloelandis.com

I would love to study art history when I get to college but some schools require an analytical writing essay for the application process, I am not sure how to get started or what specific artwork/artist to write about. Any tips?

a few questions: undergrad or grad school? is it a specific prompt for one school or general? is there an area you gravitate towards? with written samples, you want to have a subject you are passionate about and have the most comfortability with. do you have a teacher who can help guide you? email me at chloe@chloelandis and I'd be happy to chat

What resources would you recommend to learn about art history outside of college?
@ChloeLandis

khan academy and smart history are both great resources for the traditional college course materials taught. Also look into education resources for students and teachers on the websites of some of the major museums
