Rioja wines will definitely give you the best quality/price ratio. Beautiful wines. Last week I had a bottle of Contino Reserva 2016, and a Marques de Murrieta Reserva 2016, and both were amazing wines. I got the Contino one at £25 and the Marques de Murrieta at £19. Great quality for the prices. Apart from Rioja, I've also been trying Chateneauf du Pape, and I'm quite amazed by these wines! Beautiful wines these are. Unfortunately they are not cheap. Thanks for the video!

Hi Matthew, I recently started exploring Portuguese wines and tried Vinho Verde. For 10.99 I bought a Broadbent bottle and was pleasantly surprised by how good it is! I would recommend it. I'm sure there's probably even better Vinho Verde out there.

I love this video; thanks for making it! I think everyone regardless of your station in life can appreciate good value wines. I think you totally nailed it with wines from the Iberian peninsula. Both Spain and Portugal produce some delicious wines at reasonable prices. I would also add Chile and Argentina to that list too, as well as "less popular" regions from France and Italy (ex: Cotes du Rhone blends and Montepulciano D'Abruzzo). One of my go-to value wines lately is actually a Bordeaux -- Chateau Lalaudey, a cru bourgeois superior that my local wine store has for ~$20. I've tried it next to some $50 - 60 second wines from 1855 classified chateaux (ex: Baron de Brane Cantenac and Echo de Lynch Bages), and it compares quite well, especially for the price!

I have been buying wines at Village Corner for years. It was great being able to walk to the corner of South U and Church to the old store after work at UofM two or three times a week to pick up a couple bottles of good wine. The store was interesting but the wine selection was fabulous. The new store is a lot smaller but the quality of the wine selection is still high.

I think what you and others have said is true, if you are looking to get a good/great bottle of wine for under 20-25 U.S.$/euros Europe should be your go to region. Gran Reserva Rioja, Reserva/Gran Reserva Cava, Chianti Classico Riserva from less famous producers, lesser appellations of the northern & southern Rhone, vintage Cremant, the Loire, Beaujolais Crus, the premium regions of Hungary, (Eger, Tokaj, Somlo, Szekszard, Villany, Balaton sub regions), German Ortswein from the VDP across Germany, Austria, Campania, Puglia, Alto Adige, Trentino. I could name individual bottles/wineries, but I think regions gives people a better idea. The southern hemisphere also produces amazing wine, ( I think we are past the whole Old World vs. New World labels/handles, imho), but you often have to pay more for it or have to try more wines/wineries to find something that you like. I myself seldom spend more than 20/25 euros or dollars for a bottle of wine, so I could probably write a book about it if I had the time, ha!

If you really dig that earthy flavor that is reminiscent of being on the farm, do yourself a favor and try some pu-erh tea. Get a pack that comes in a wrapper that you have to break off to brew, you will not be disappointed. They say to do a pre brew and set aside the first little bit and drink the next brew, but don't do that, and you will be hit with flavors of the pasture that are very intense. Reminded me of when I was a child and lived on a farm with cows, horses, chickens and buffalo.

Would you consider 92+ (under your scoring system) to be a "great" wine? Because my favorite wine under $20 (actually under $10 at Total Wine) is one that you blind-tasted and gave 92+ points: Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling!😋👏🙏 Perhaps not quite "great" but certainly very good is the 2019 Catena Malbec (under $15 at Total Wine). I think the 2020 Donnachiara "Empatia" Fiano di Avellino (under $20 after a special deal at Total Wine) was terrific, albeit quite the chameleon depending on what we ate it with--sometimes okay but other times marvelous!

There are countless number of wines in France and Italy that you could get for around 15-20 euros that would feel luxurious to drink as a daily wine. Unfortunately, they're just not available in the USA or Canada. The selection available in North America for $20 or less is pretty much cooking wine quality, IMHO. I'll be interested in hearing what other commenters recommend.
@VektrumSimulacrum
@VektrumSimulacrum 2 жыл бұрын
It's for sure a lot harder to find good stuff under $20 that's better than cooking wine but it's doable. I think part of it is the American Palate and the consumers they're targeting. I have pretty good luck finding those tiny wineries that no one really knows about but with still enough of a presence to make it onto store shelves even if it's only locally.

If you take a 2017 crianza so 5 years old and wait a couple more years before drinking it, will it be a quality of reserve? And what bottle age would you say it best for riojas? Also with chiantis in regards to when they should be enjoyed?
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey Жыл бұрын
Usually they won’t as Reservas have higher quality grapes in them. Most Rioja Reservas and Gran Reservas can be enjoyed on release. Chiantis depend on their quality, appellation, vintage, and your personal tastes 😃
