In the city where I live, there's a fairly popular art museum that would do free admission on the first Friday of the month (before Covid). Hey Bruce, it's nice to reconnect with you and your music. I have many many great stories about hearing and even playing your music. One day in 1979, I was hanging out with some friends on the balcony across the street. There was a real heavy rainstorm presence in the area around Calgary but we were sheltered with a roof and comfortable. A friend and I were singing Born to Run and really hitting it up. We were approaching the climax of the refrain, "Baby we were born to . . . " and there was a monstrous bolt of lightning right there and then so we couldn't hear ourselves sing "RUN!" It was a magical gift as is your music. Thank you. Come up to Vancouver when isolation settles down.

I would have to pick the "hurricane" as my favorite Dylan song, I imagine Bruce would approve ? I feel like I have known Bruce since my 1970s HS days. He's important to me, no other way to put it.

Well it would tie in with their shared political conscience, so yeah. I also grew up with his music since the '70s so I get it; just don't want to one of those guys who say to people who have just discovered something, well I was there at the beginning so I have special rights which in no way are you saying at all! Great comment.

Best Dylan story is 'Black Diamond Bay' on the Desire album.

I adore that song! In fact I adore that whole album. The only two Dylan albums that probably surpass it for me are Blood on the Tracks and Blonde on Blonde. Bringing it all Back Home is also really high on the list.

Best lines: As the mornin’ light breaks open, the Greek comes down And he asks for a rope and a pen that will write “Pardon, monsieur,” the desk clerk says Carefully removes his fez “Am I hearin’ you right?”

My favorite is the river. I prefer listening to whole albums then singles, but i am definitely old school and Bruce's age.

Good question about listening to albums all the way through. Starting with the Walkman, music consumption became more of an individual thing, whereas prior to that it was much more communal: You got the new albums,; you listened with your roommates or friends; sat around with the album covers and liner notes; smoked a number or drank a beer or glass of wine; and you talked about the music then listened again. Together. Not so now, especially since the iPod and phones and playlists came along. You listen with ear buds and shut out everything else, including other people. It’s almost gone back to the era of the single - the 45. And we do it all by ourselves. Kind of a shame, The “listening party” is long gone, as well as human interaction. Is this progress? I think not.

On the other hand, I listen to a lot of music by artists who basically didn't make albums. Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams, Billie Holiday, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, etc.
@larrypower86594 жыл бұрын
@Pat Conolly. Well, Smokey and all the Motown and Soul artists certainly made albums in the ‘60s and later - lots of them. And they were dorm and apartment mainstays, especially when the party began. The artists you refer to may not have been part of that era, certainly. But in their day the experience was still communal: People listened to the radio and listened (wait for it) together. Point being, the listening experience was communal from the dawn of popular radio in the ‘20s until the advent of personal devices, in the late ‘80s and beyond.
@PotrzebieConolly4 жыл бұрын
@@larrypower8659 Well, all the Motown songs I listened to were singles (until WHAT"S GOING ON). I did also play them from Greatest Hits albums, but that's not quite the same thing. I do agree with your main point, although it doesn't really apply to me - ever since my choice of THE BEST OF THE CHICAGO BLUES was poo-pooed in favor of THE YES ALBUM I always preferred to listen to music by myself.

I think Bruce's description of your life as a car containing all the previous versions of you is very true. As someone who is 2 years older than Bruce, I recognise the analogy and the fact that sometimes it's the earlier version who's driving. This is especially bad when my early 30s incarnation is at the wheel. I wasn't very pleasant then. Age tells you that you might give that person some slack.
