I remember most of these. My dad was well into technology, so my first game was Paddington on the ZX Spectrum, and that came on a tape! I think we spent more time waiting for the game to load than we ever did playing it. 😄

My uncle came home with a Nintendo console after his tour in the military where he lived in Japan for 6 months. It was 1980 something and he was so into tech after this and gifted the NES to my grandparents. Thus started a multi generational love and loyalism to Nintendo as even us grand kids loved to watch the grandparents play dr.Mario and chip & Dale rescue rangers to the point the grandparents decided to add a Wii to the household as soon as north America got them. We even got Nintendo gamboys and DS systems for birthdays and Christmases.

What a fun idea! I was young in the 90s so I was playing everything a few years late, so born in 89 but playing NES in the early 90s, SNES after 94, etc. Commando is a classic, one of my earliest memories is that, Zelda and SMB lol. That and getting the SNES when I was like 4 or 5... Then Pokemon, dear Lord. And PC gaming, which despite not having a gaming PC I was fascinated with and again playing games a year or two or three late so my PC could run it haha. Monkey Island, Doom, Descent, Duke Nukem... Ultima! Such huge influences - JRPGs wouldn't exist the same way without Ultima.

Im not much younger than you Pete, si even though i played only a few of these, i felt so nostalgic. They all made sense and took me back to my childhood and hearing them talked about loads. Mario really took over for a bit, but the n64 had the chokehold on society more than any other console did at that time. Great video, more of these please!

What a great video! One of my favorite memories was getting me first console. It was an N64 that I got on Christmas in the late 90s. It came with Mario 64 and then my dad would take me to Blockbuster to rent games lol

The thing with Space Invaders is that I bet it's update loop is based on clock speed, so I bet it'll run worse on modern hardware than a crappy 1980's cab. Try playing Rebel Assault 1 on dos box without fixes and you'll see what I mean lmao.

And I don't think I got any of these games for Christmas lol. I was usually behind in getting consoles and games because they were so expensive when they first came out! I think the first console I actually got on Christmas that I can remember was a PS3. Because the way it worked for me was...my mom got me the NES and a bunch of games/accessories for it in a trade (she owned a limo company and the guy wanting to ride around in it happened to be some top guy at Nintendo...yeah. We live in WA so Nintendo of America is in our backyard basically lol). All brand new stuff...but this was 1994-1995. The SNES had already been out by then. Eventually I did upgrade to a SNES but I believe I bought a used one through Gamestop by trading in all my NES stuff. And I think I had it for a year before I went with the N64. I do remember the N64 vs PS1 fighting that would go on...I was a Nintendo fan. I had to stick with Nintendo. However...about the time the Gamecube came out, I decided to give the PS1 a shot...and I will say playing Spyro the Dragon on the PS1 blew my god damn mind. I'd never been so impressed by the graphics in a game before...and haven't since then...yeah even with all the realistic games we have these days. Then of course...the Gamecube. I played it of course but it was the first time I was let down by Nintendo. Playstation ended up winning me over. idk maybe it was the controller or the games that I got but I just did not like the Gamecube...same with the SNES. Just not a fan. So after the GC, I switched fully to Playstation with the PS2...I stopped paying attention to Nintendo around that time...of course I was growing older and the PS2 appealed more to older kids tastes. Eventually I did pick up a Wii but again...not impressed lol. Honestly I haven't been impressed since the N64 with Nintendo's consoles. I still get them for the games but...the consoles don't excite me like they used to. The Switch was...sort of interesting though. Anyways...again...I don't think ANY of those consoles I got new at Christmas. I remember specifically buying the PS2 I still own to this day...at a swap meet...used lol. Damn thing still works. I will say my memory is pretty fuzzy...it's possible the N64 or GC was new at Christmas...but...I got more toys...maybe a game or two...I don't remember actual consoles. And given that I remember a lot of stuff about my consoles...you'd think I would remember getting one brand new at Christmas.

I remember having outrun, but I think I had it on a megadrive 2, had the og super mario and sonic games too, vice city also, I've seen all gens, but I'm slightly disappointed in humanity for not having a single castlevania or megaman game in the list, especially SOTN.. In fact, I'm gonna say it, I think mario is overrated.. The first was good, mario kart was good, all else was overrated and stuck in time imo

I don't understand Pete's narrative here at ALL. He begins by saying these are the best selling Christmas games ever, and does not even so much as mention the Legend of Zelda? Instead he goes off on chat about some game named Gauntlet. I am the same age as Pete and I cannot even recall if I ever so much as heard of Gauntlet, let alone played it or believe it was the best selling of that year. Later he goes into a story about Jaguar, and Sega CD that have nothing to do with the next game, the classic OG reason to buy the Sega Genesis (the reason I compiled my birthday and christmas money to get it) Mortal Kombat. It even says Sega Genesis on the box art he shows. THEN my dude goes on a jealous tirade trying to claim the Nintendo 64 was limited and failing in its releases, and Playstation was there to save the day. BROTHER what??? People still play Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time to this day! Dont get me wrong, Playstation was great, but it was great because we all has that one friend that could bootleg copy games for it, so the bar was set low for what quality gameplay we needed out of it. The bias shows in the personal path he took through gaming growing up. Which we all have, but its possible to retro-actively repair that bias now that we are adults, and are able to play any game from any console made. The console wars of the past are over Pete, we are home now with family and friends, let the war go.

To be fair, in Pete's defense, I wrote my comment at the 18 and a half minute mark. He did at least cover the N64 games, even if his lead up to it did not sound as though he would, and even if it was drenched in the PTSD night sweats of wars gone-by. Good on ya Pete. ❤

The stream data was collected about the best selling games during the Christmas holidays (December) so there were some shocking surprises. I also used the video to sprinkle in my own experiences and anecdotal stories. I wouldn’t take it so seriously as I am a games enthusiast and love all the consoles!

Pete cops lots for being old - I'm Gen X - we were the first to game fulltime...i had an apple iie and atari 2600 and can remember a pong-thing console before them that i never see anyone mention. Hayes modems. mIRC chat all night... I'm a 1971 kid. I'm glad its cool to be a gamer now but its hard for older gamers to hang with younger gamers. I've been to events and get excluded and feel like a creeper... wish i was born 40 years later. my Gen missed out on the Mario years we were already on PCs or Macs at work...had gameboy handhelds but we were too early for the Nintendo cool stuff. all we had was japan sony which was miniature and different from worldwide sony...so calculator watches.
