This information was really helpful! I tend to be sensitive to products with hyaluronic acid and I never considered that it could be because they make my skin *more* absorbant of irritatants. Incidentally, I'm also sensitive to niacinamide, and finding products with neither of those ingredients is *hard* lol

Same with both HA and Niacinamide. For some reason my skin reacts with both ingredients. I've tried several brands and even experimented just straight HA and straight Niacinamide with no other products to interfere, and I still get a reaction. So now I just try to avoid them. 🤷♀️

No matter what, when I use HA-heavy products I end up with irritation, edema (it's like my skin just looks puffy and is super soft in a bad way), and then I end up with small spots then deep cystic acne. As soon as I realized it, I quit those products, and my skin has never been happier. It does suck though because HA is in everything

Omg!!!! You literally saved my life with this video!!! For 4 months I have suffered with allergic reaction (itching, tight, dry, swollen lips) using 2.5 percent hydrocortisone but it kept coming back. I tried eliminating everything and then slowly adding products back in. Thought it was toothpaste, lipstick, cleansers, gluten, toner, moisturizer, etc…. Never crossed my mind it would be Neutragenia Hydroboost!!! It would feel good going on but then later the symptoms would come back. I stopped after watching your video and like magic… the symptoms are gone!!! I can’t thank you enough!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Last year when starting to work from home I discovered that the hyaluronic acid was causing my skin to be more dry and irritated, which I really did not understand since it was supposed to help with hydration. I stopped using it and all the products that contain hyaluronic acid or its derivatives, and my skin improved soon after. I thought I was the only one with this problem, and I could not find anything on the internet related to it. So thank you so much for this video!

Thank God I am not going crazy with HA!! Cause the first time I tried it was the Cerave Moisturizer...not only it made my skin insanely dry (and yes I even tried all of the tips as well) it broke me out terrible!! Then years later tried out again with a serum and same thing. And the last one I tried was the Vanicream HA moisturizer (which I love Vanicream), again same thing until I stopped using it. Glad that you talked about this topic!! Have a happy Thursday y'all!! 💜

I switched from using Cerave to Cetaphil. Irritation stopped. Nowadays so many products contain HA, niacinamide and actives, it think it’s just about too much for the skin. I tend to look for products with glycerin or seaweed/marine extracts. I also find squalene really helpful in strengthening the skin barrier and less problematic.

However, when I started using The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid alongside retinol, I started getting a lot of irritation over other types of HA. This explains why it's causing irritation for me more specifically. Thank you. Great to know I have been doing the right thing with Shea butter too and having sensitivities I always avoid fragrances. @laurieparis22033 жыл бұрын
Something that was not mentioned but may be relevant to irritation is the source from which the hyaluronic acid has been purified. Traditionally it was taken from rooster cock combs. But with increased demand production has turned towards harvesting it from bacterial species. One of which is streptococcus, as hyaluronic acid part of their outer membrane which helps it to hide from its host. Sloppy purification methods may result in exotoxins present in this bacteria existing in the final product. 🌱

I've heard at least one skin care person recommend to possibly prevent dehydration make sure a product has BOTH hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate. There are also products that have different molecular weight HAs in them; some have five or eight or 10, etc. And another recommendation was to use beta glucan or even polyglutamic acid/galactomyces if HA isn't tolerable.

Hi Dr Dray I'm one of the people who doesn't respond well to a lot of HA. I'm not allergic to it at all, but find that overusing it creates a lot of problems for me. I have extremely dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin and live in Scotland, which isn't exactly a humid place lol (a lot of wind, rain, cold etc throughout the year). If there is a bit of HA in a moisturiser etc it's absolutely fine, but HA based serums with a lot of different HA molecules in a fairly high amount, does cause rebound extra dehydration and irritation for me. I just avoid those and find glycerine, beta glucans and other humectants cause me far fewer issues. It's very easy to overdo the HA as it's in practically every skincare product tbh and this is what in my mind is causing the issues. It needs water to draw from and despite using very occlusive products on top - there isn't enough moisture in the atmosphere here to support so much HA. It then pulls it from my skin and causes more water loss. There is also the other possibility that something else in the formulation is compounding the problem. I therefore just make sure not everything I use has HA in it, nor do I use a product where it is heavily featured - issue resolved. My skin does tolerate it better in the height of Summer when there is humidity in the atmosphere, but not through the colder months. Being aware of the ingredients you are using in each skincare product can help prevent overuse, which I believe is what is causing the problems for many people. Best wishes.

Greeting from across the Pond. I've just now watched this old video and am astonished. 7mod ago I started using products with hyaluronic acid. I'm 66 with no wrinkles ,I'm very fair with sensitive skin . It's taken me all thus time to finally realize that it's the wrong product git Me. You've explained it so well. I've always had beautiful skin and it's been such a painful experience. Here I was using more to help combat the burning on my cheeks and tiny bumps that suddenly appeared only to gave my skin start flaking. I started backing away about one week ago and now have confirmation it's the proper way to go. I've no idea why Hyaluronic Acid is so popular. Thank you fir sharing .🌹

@@deniseganey6890 No problem and I'm glad it helped. HA can work really well in a humid environment and many people have no issue with it. I don't think HA itself is the problem but the concentration it's formulated with is. For example the ordinarys niacinamide is 10percent concentration which is way higher than you need. It's also the case of having too much of a good thing- using a HA based cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and sunscreen can be too overwhelming for your skin

I hadn’t had one since March 2020 back when I was using the previous serum. The rash is always on the cheeks- not near the nose but kind of the middle. It’s red, a little itchy, and tiny little bumps or pimples. It’s the only thing that I have narrowed it down to 😕 I typically use the vitamin c / hylaronic acid serum and moisturizer in the morning after cleansing- and then cleanse at night and apply niacinamide and retinol at night

Side note, I was not using the night serums when I was getting the rashes before

I know your comment is from long ago, but I wanted to tell you that you've described exactly what happens to me when using HA--even simply cleansers containing HA. It lasts a long time. I've switched to more basic cleansers and moisturizers that contain colloidal oatmeal and slowly have repaired my skin.

omg...... i finally understood what was causing my allergies. It's been HA all along!!

and here Im, a person that can only use HA as a hydrator and also moisturizer :/ i know HA isnt meant to be a moisturizer, but i cant use any emollient and also occlusive product to my skin. i've tried several time to use both of em, and it always broke me out...

I have allergic to niacinamide :').... Broke the shit out for entire year and found out that most of the moisturisers I used contained niacinamide... When I stopped using and changed to those without my skin went back to normal

I’ve been taking Hyaluronic acid supplements for 2 weeks, now have developed an odd rash on my arms. Not sure if it’s related, but I can’t find another cause.

I found out I had an allergy or some immune responses to Hylauronic Acid when I got Filler. I wanted to try it, and the doctor had good reviews. I ended up at the ER for massive granulomas. I had to go on steroids for 3 months.

Also explained why I couldn't use a lot of serums on the market today, always end up with little itchy bumps. For the longest time, doctor said it was impossible yo have a HA allergy, I believed him until the filler happened. I also have a weird immune system inherited from my father.

I’m very confused after Dr. Sherene Idriss dispelled HA saying that it draws moisture out of the skin and even using it with an occlusive moisture is pointless and to just moisturize instead, help! 😑

That's why I'm here 😭 I don't feel like she's right tho, maybe it depends on the humidity?
@Catb33333 жыл бұрын
That may happen with any humectant in very low humidity environments. As long as you are using a moisturizer, and the humidity in your environment is not too low, then everything should be ok

I think I am allergic and I’m watching this video now.. I have been using a bunch of products at once and I just stopped all of them because my under eye area is extremely irritated from them even though I double checked that all can be used around the eyes.

I used a hyaluronic acid lip gloss one time, and felt like I had a sunburn on my lips. Never again! It's okay on my face but it does get a little irritating to me if I'm using a tretinoin or adapalene. Otherwise its fine on my face.

Interesting topic. I got Bioderma's Hydrabio Serum as a gift. But I'm kinda scared to try it cause its scented, and I have eczema :(

Don't feel guilty if you decide to donate or regift it (rather than risking the product irritating your skin). It is a leave-on product containing fragrance, so I think it is something that would be sensible for you to avoid. The person gave it to you with good intentions, but maybe forgot that your skin is more sensitive than theirs. Treat yourself with another more suitable product. It doesn't necessarily need to be expensive. 👱♀️❤

@@nadab4750 Thank you ❤️❤️ I did feel guilty because it's kinda pricey and it was a gift from my dad 🥺 But scented products make me flare up really bad lol, I don't want to take that risk.
