Hi Jordan. If the refractometer can't tell if the stone has been treated or dyed. What tests do they do to determine that?

@@MTUnique I actually had a long section about this in the original edit of the video, but I took it out because I thought it was too boring 😂 Maybe I was wrong, haha. Dye can be detected using a handheld diffraction spectroscope, but polymer/wax/resin impregnation is detected using a spectrometer - a tabletop laser that interprets non-visible spectra using a computer program. Those machines typically cost ~$30k 😱

Oh wow. So that's why it costs so much to have it tested, authenticated, and certified. They provide a service that is hard to get without a lot of money invested. I have stones that I want to send in and get tested but it's a gamble that they'll be worth the money to test.

@@MTUniqueGIA usually costs more than a smaller company like Mason-Kay. At Mason-Kay, they ask you to send photos first so they can help you determine if the pieces are worth having tested. Sometimes, treated jade can look very obvious. But if the specimen looks natural, it almost has to be tested to know for sure. Some treatments look veeeery good, unfortunately

Thank you for watching my product review of the PGT II. Were you surprised by the results?

the only surprise is price. seems to do the same function as those 3 dollar gem tester sticks from china, reading thermal conductivity calculating it into a approximately correct number on mohs scale.

My instructions say to put loose gems on a metal test plate, maybe that's why your readings were off? Notice it worked beautifully on your diamond that was on metal? Cheers.
@JewelsoftheTrade13 сағат бұрын
@@moxiemcmahon Interesting! I think the purpose for the plate is just to hold the gem still, which probably does help get a more accurate reading. It shouldn’t affect the thermal conductivity of the material. I was a little surprised that my PGTII didn’t come with some kind of plate when I ordered it, so I have to assume that if it were necessary for accuracy - it would have come with it. The thermal conductivity of a diamond is significantly different from that of most colored stones, so a TC tester should definitely be able to get an accurate reading on a diamond.

Hi, There is this shop called Aria Design Collection, and i am wondering if they sell real jade. It would be appreciated if you could tell me pls and thank you

For $300 you don’t even get the exact gem name from the reader? Not worth it.
@goldsilverandiamonds3 ай бұрын
Definitely worth it in certain buying situations. Where sellers are not aware of the stones value. It can pay of itself in one test. Many sellers don't care about gemstone values.
