It's strange how different cultures can be. In Portugal or Germany it is quite normal to be friends with your ex if you part on good terms. If you know and understand each other well, it is easier to find a suitable partner for the other. Maybe not everyone would do that, but it's not uncommon either. Being friends with an ex shows that you really appreciate that person. Not being a good couple doesn't mean you can't be good friends. A lot of people couldn't imagine that when I was young, but nowadays it's totally okay.

Totally agree. In addition to that, it is nearly impossible to not see each other if you share a circle of friends. I never dived in to that pond and always stayed neutral, but in my group of friends I still know from school, there were/partially still are couples and even if it was awkward in the beginning for them or took some time to be fully comfortable, it somehow worked out. and don't let me get started on one night stands. like one of my friends had her first time (both were drunk though) with the best friend of her later boyfriend. They broke up not to long ago after many years. Again on good terms and definetly not because of that first time. That had never been an issue.

Philippines is the same with Korea, but I never shared the same belief. I am friends with 2 of my exes, one of them became my bestfriend till now. I am even godmother to one of his kids. Both my husband and his wife knew we were together before and they have no issues. We have been open about it from the start. We found that being friends was the best for us and that's that.

From what I know it's definitely better to not stay in touch with your ex, it usually doesn't end well. If you're on good terms with them and introduce them to someone new to date..then stay out of it after that. Their relationship has nothing to do with you and any feelings you might have for them are your problem to deal with. 🤷♀

I’ve stayed friends with a couple exes. One is married & moved away, but we still text to talk about movies, sports our lives etc. Nothing too deep. I’ve met her husband & he’s a really cool guy. I had another girlfriend that I used to see & after we split we’d go hiking/biking together & we went to concerts & stuff like that. I think a lot of it has to do with how things end. I have an ex-wife that I’m not interested in talking to. Like, at all. But there are other relationships I’ve been in that haven’t worked out, but we split amicably & I don’t have a problem remaining friends with them. Or not. I guess it just depends on the person.

I think OOP should've been upfront with the friend about the girl being his ex before he set them up on a date, especially because OOP and ex are still in contact and are also pretty close friends. Unless the friend is the chilliest person on earth, I'm sure their friendship is doomed if he ever finds out. OOP is also an idiot for assuming stuff about both the ex and the friend and introducing them in hopes they wouldn't click.

I love this topic. My first girlfriend was when I was 15 and after finishing high school and being in college I ran into her again. (Some time after we broke up). She was of course with someone else at the time and she asked if I'd like to meet her new BF. I thought to myself pretty much the same as these 3 but agreed to do so. That guy turned out to be one of my longest best friends I've had. Now this is probably due to we were young and it wasn't as serious as later relationships. Either way, we are still quite friendly with each other today.
@arianamarkus50412 жыл бұрын
It's definitely interesting to see how opinions on topics such as this vary from place to place... Personally, I find it strange to completely cut someone out of your life just because you used to date. If the relationship ended on bad terms, then yeah, don't talk to them or see them anymore. If it ended amicably, though? If it was a mutual decision where you both just realized that you weren't suited as romantic partners...? To me it seems a little silly to just cut off all communication and shun them 😶
@raquelfigueroa55392 жыл бұрын
I agree. I mean it doesn’t mean that you have to be looking for them and talk to them everyday. But if you see them it’s ok to say, no need to ignored them. If it someone with whom things ended bad or you know that will just try to create problems with you and your new person. I think it’s a good idea to block them.
@arianamarkus50412 жыл бұрын
@@raquelfigueroa5539 Totally agree! Even if you don't necessarily stay _friends_ after an amicable breakup, you can still acknowledge them if you see them. In terms of breakups that end badly, I definitely understand and encourage cutting all contact with them

There are just some people who will completely turn you off that after dating them you never want to acknowledge their presence ever again lol. I think this is definitely a cultural difference. While some people in the US feel as strongly as the hosts in the video do about this, I think it’s about 50/50 whether someone would want to stay friends with an ex or not, and I think the people who don’t could still understand why some others are still friends with their ex. From my perspective, if you truly care about someone and things didn’t end badly, why wouldn’t you want them in your life still? If someone I dated never wanted to see or talk to me again just because we broke up (on good terms), I would feel like they never truly cared about me… Of course people need space to move on, but aside from that, what’s the big deal?

To me, when you refuse to let your partner meet a past lover it shows 3 things: 1. A lack of trust towards your partner. 2. Insecurity, because you believe your partner is more interested in their past lover. Which is ironic considering they are with you now. 3. Obsessiveness. You are trying to control the actions of you partner. It's a bad idea.
