So interesting. What a great idea to examine the content of ads and commercials. The initial advertisement was from the 1950's US - before women's liberation. People may not realize that it was not that long ago in the US that women were literally the 'subjects' of their husbands and fathers. Physical violence was accepted as a from of punishment. Now rather than sexist content, ads are more likely to have sexual content. It is so hopeful to hear these two having such a different philosophy. Thanks for this.

I don't think the first ad is necessarily sexist, but it does promote domestic violence which I'd consider worse.
@CottidaeSEA
@CottidaeSEA Жыл бұрын
@@aprilgreen2006 The ad does in no way say that the woman is a second class citizen, it does not say the woman is inferior in any way. You could technically say the domestic violence portrayed in it is, but that is simply domestic violence. That is an act of punishment and domestic violence by the husband because of what is described in the ad. If you look into what ads were like back then, you'll see that this was a very common theme. Someone being punished for making the bad decision of not choosing X brand. This follows that trend. As such, I don't see the sexism in it, only promotion of domestic violence. If you want to bring history into an argument, you need to add more than that. That's surface level knowledge that the vast majority of people are aware of. You'll just make a fool out of yourself if that's all you've got. Not that I have much more knowledge, but I've been around for long enough to know that it's a bad idea.

I disagree. The ad stated that it was the woman's JOB to do grocery shopping and buy coffee, so it was warning the woman against choosing a coffee brand that was not fresh or her husband could or would SPANK her. If that is not sexist, I do not what is.

@@cniknik9863 If what you're claiming is true, that would mean it's the same now. It is not. A bisexual person will be abusive to anyone for example. It is not based on sexism. The reason why it was common/normal very well might have been, but not the domestic violence itself.

Since 'coke' is illegal, some people found a work-around the law that allowed for blatant accessories ads (storage, fraction kits, etc). They even got to be advertised on popular magazines that you could find in any family household up to late 80s, that was actually way more controversial than anything showed here.

Equal housework is stupid! What is really going on is trying to force men to live in a manner they would not choose. When a man is a bachelor, he doesn't clean the bathroom every week, he doesn't do the dishes every day, he smell-checks his laundry rather than clean it when it doesn't stink and he is happy this way because he can spend more time doing things he values...like sports, games, naps, etc. It makes sense to share housework to the level he would be happy. Still, a man would rather hire someone because the relative gains/costs of all that stuff is a very different equation generally...it's not wrong!
@somebodyoncetoldme2664
@somebodyoncetoldme2664 Жыл бұрын
First of all you don't speak for all men...you speak for yourself. But it makes sense to share housework not to the point that "he would be happy" as if his happiness is a priority over the woman? (only talking about straight relationships as an example)..but it's called being reasonable and sensible to take care of your home and respect your home by not living in a dump. However, if you believe that it's ok to not clean up after yourself, throw your clothes on the floor because your chair is full of old dirty laundry and you are too lazy to wash em till later or don't care to cook for yourself so order takeouts 24/7 thats whatever...because it's your house and you live alone. BUT if you start dating someone you change! You start doing things for your partner and they do stuff for you. It goes without questioning. You shouldn't force nor subject your partner to live with your barely subpar living standards. You can help out. In todays society it's almost impossible to live somewhere without having your partner work too. Dual income households are the norm and it's ok. Because of that both of you are working and so there is no reason why you shouldn't help one another to help with cooking, cleaning and laundry. It's not the woman's "natural role" as it has nothing to do with biology. However, if only one of you worked then the other should do those tasks as they have more free time. A man and a woman would rather hire someone to do all those tasks instead of doing them themselves. There is no difference there. But in REALITY you can't afford it so put up with not living live a slob and take care of each other. Noones being "forced" and if anything woman are being forced to do those tasks because men assign those tasks a gender which makes no sense. Cleaning =/ female task. It doesn't equal that. It means you have self respect to not live in a shithole and respect your partner to not subject them to live like that because you want to play a game instead. Prioritise your tasks together. Grow up imo. Equal housework is perfectly sensible that any grown up should understand and endure if you don't like it...but I'm sure you love the result. If adulting isn't for you then go back and live with your parents and don't date woman and expect them to do X,Y and Z for you simply because you have a 3 inch dick. (insult intended only for sexist weirdos)
