Can You Join the Merchant Marine with a DUI, Drug Possession Charge, or Felony?

So if you have multiple (like 2 or 3) possession charges, even if they’re 10-15+ years old and you have proof of rehabilitation and can pass the drug screen, they’re still just gonna tell you, “nah?” That’s kinda crappy, if that’s the ACTUAL case. It just sends the message: “don’t BOTHER working on yourself because we’re NEVER going to let you back in the club.”

could you make a comparison video between active duty USN and MSC? stuff like qualifications, duty, watch sections, schedule, living quarters, types of ship, etc. considering applying as a RET in the future.

i got a misdemeanor like 4 years ago got it expunge here in california san diego ...working part time right now and will try to join next year... also i got a weed ticket like maybe 20 years ago, im sure thats pretty much dont even consider to be like a big red flag.. im clean for over a decade+ just did with hanging with the cool kids lol we all do dumb stuff like you said...

Question unrelated to this but does as a veteran do VA benefits play a role in if you are allowed to do this job? Would this affect VA compensation as in it may be looked at as you are somewhat returning to military service?

The Merchant Marine is not military service, even if you're working on ships contracted for the Department of Defense or MSC. You're considered a civilian, so your role does not equate to re-enlistment or a return to active duty. The VA would not see this as "returning to military service."
