The thing about gouache is that it is usually used straight from the tube. Very opaque, using them dried makes you rely on rewetting and the washes at the beginning of your book are so pale. How interesting to see someone using dried pans! There is also a difference in how the pigments are milled, much larger particle sizes compared to watercolor. I'm learning a lot from your exploration.

Thanks so much for watching! I'm looking forward to trying the paint out straight from the tube and seeing what happens.

You can't use Gouache straight from the tube because they are thicker. The brush would not move smooth. You'll need to add a little water first for smooth movement of brush

❤ your Chanel. Just a tip; If you put a drop of honey in your half pants as a binding agent. It would also help you re-wet and will keep your quash from molding because honey has natural antimicrobial properties. Just put a drop in mix it well with your wet wash and then let it dry down. I do this, and it works like a charm for me.

As soon as I started learning watercolors, I was introduced to gouache! It's amazing how well they work and compliment each other and definitely something I want to try one day - especially cuz It can cover up my amateur watercolors so well! Very excited to be witnessing your gouache journey and know I can bug you with questions whenever the day finally comes!!!!

I am also experimenting with gouache. I am using a dedicated synthetic set of brushes for gouache -and use two cups of water (one tonclean the brush and another one to pick up clean water) I dont need extra brushes...and because brushes are synthetic they dont stain. Love yhe idea of transcribing paints. Inhad the same problem with greens turning lime or too emerald. So much fun and so much more to be had!

Have you considered using a wet gouache palette? You'd be fighting to reactivate it less and still have the convenience of a little tin to open up and use without setup. It also encourages using gouache in thicker layers which youd likely enjoy quite a bit. I'd also recommend rather than 1 color per brush, use a clean water cup and a dirty one. Clean to dilute your gouache, dirty to clean your brush. Really helps with keeping colors vibrant.

@@toboldlynerd_ I haven't heard of this, a wet pallet, I'll give it a try! In the two weeks since I made this video, I've been having a lot of fun combining the dry pallet and using paint from the tubes for new techniques. It's a wild ride ahahha thanks for watching!

@@stephaniescottart yeah! Look up gouache wet palette or transon wet palette and you'll find a few videos. I have a 24 well one and it's my absolute favorite thing. Airtight, gouache stays wet (esp with added watercolor medium, also recommend clove bud oil), so you have your creamy gouache you can take with you but nothing spills ever. It takes out the set up and for me, helps me feel like I'm not wasting paint

Great info. Thank you! Later, when you go to paint one of your geometric-shapes with gouache, will you mask the edges? And do you mask edges on your oils or freehand the lines? Love your crisp edged and colorful abstracts.❤
@stephaniescottart7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! I don't mask my edges for either material, as the dry times for oil paint hinders my progress and the precision I can get with gouache (and the right brush) is easy enough to achieve. In the future I might add masking fluid on the frame of my gouache paintings to get a clean look. But I haven't tried it yet.

Now im thinking about it and seeing these comments people only use gouache in one way very thick But gouache can be used in so many ways Like i ve been experimenting with watercolours using opaque and transparent colours Making full use of the medium Not heing boxed in by what you should do

So i ve been experimenting with dried gouache If the paint is very crumbly add a little honey or glycerine The trick with using them is watercontrol Which is similar to watercolour Which just takes time But its so much more convient and less messy and you save paint

oh wow! yeah, you don’t supposed to dry it.. some gouache don’t reactivate almost at all or become flakie - but for experimenting purpused it’s interesting to treat it like the watercolours 😊 One day I’ll get schmincke gouache - I heard only good feedback about it =)

Only a KZbinr would pan gouache. Those tubes do not weigh more than that tin and pans. Absolutely ridiculous.

Thanks for watching! I chose to pan them so my travel equipment wouldn't be liquid; the weight didn't matter at much. It's kind of fun to break the 'rules' of a material :)

@@toboldlynerd_ dried "gouache" is called tempera paint. I am not telling anyone what to do with their supplies. Merely pointing out gouache isn't meant to be pan dried. It loses its opacity. If you want a dried travel version get tempera paint. Caran dache sells a lovely tempera set. Not trying to be an ass. Just telling the truth. By all means do a thou will.

Sarah Burns - also on KZbin- a watercolor and amazing gouache painter has tested all kinds of brands of gouache in both wet and dried form. If you’re planning to continue using gouache, it would be fun to check her out. Meanwhile I’m sure enjoying this video and your experiences as I just purchased a beginner’s set in the M Graham brand 😅. I normally paint with watercolor.
