Also a good idea if your fridge doesn't have an icemaker. $380 is a lot cheaper than a new fridge.

I did not know that sonic sold pebble ice. Learned something new.

OMG!!!! I just ordered and received this machine, however I ordered the one renamed/co-branded by GE Profile (same machine you show here but with GE Logo), and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! This one has an addition water tank that magnet sticks to either side of the main unit. It was under $600 with tax. So far the noise is a light humming. Not too bad. No more 70 mile round trip visits to SONIC. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

My guess is there's a boom mic in the shot that's composited out and his hand was in that area

So you're saying this machine is not a true Scotsman?
@TheEducatedBarfly5 жыл бұрын
I say the ice is actually better than the ice a Scotsman makes, it’s bigger ice so it melts a bit slower.

I picked up one with the extra reservoir to make more ice. Yes it runs a bit loud, but that's the only knock against it. Made many drinks the first day and they kept temperature for longer, probably due to the quality of the ice. I picked it up from GE and they added an extra year of service with it. Great machine, there's some cost to it, but it's worth it!

You could keep it in the garage next to the chest freezer to speed up the bagging process, and handle the wife's noise abatement issue. Then just keep the ice in the house as needed. Just an idea...
@TheEducatedBarfly5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s the plan it just gets a bit dusty in the garage so we gotta figure that out....

Appreciate this review. They’re $2K AUD / $1291 USD Hopefully the new ones out are improved. (Side reservoir, noise etc…?)

If anyone lives near a sonic drive thru they sell bags of their pebble ice it's ausome. One of those secret menu things.

I have a pebble ice cube tray that I picked up for 99 cents. It works well but youre limited by the tray nature of it. It would take me awhile to build up that much pebble ice

I have a Ninja food processor/blender so I usually just put what regular ice i have in that and beat the crap out of it to get some crushed ice. Works pretty well. SUPER noisy though.

Now that you've had the ice maker over a year, do you still recommend it? Seeing lots of bad reviews about longevity and related service/support. Also, the GE branded version looks a little different from the one you have in the video.
@TheEducatedBarfly3 жыл бұрын
Yes I recommend it but you do have to take care of it. I think a lot of those bad reviews are due to people setting it up to continually make Ice all the time and it burns out. I set it to make ice, collect the ice in a bin and store in the freezer until I run out. In the times it not using the Ice, I drain the machine of water. Every month I clean with a 5:1 water to bleach solution and run the cleaning cycle. Doing that I have had not one problem

Is it really worth it for commercial applications? How much can it made in 24 hrs?
@TheEducatedBarfly5 жыл бұрын
No. This machine would not work for commercial applications. Commercially you’d need an industrial ice maker like a Scotsman...

Do you? Or can you use this ice to shake or stir cocktails? Or does it dilute too fast?
@TheEducatedBarfly3 жыл бұрын
We use it when we do whip shakes, but usually better to use rocks or ice pieces when shaking and stirring to control dilution.

Now that you have had this for a few months, have you experienced any of the issues that I am constantly reading about in the negative reviews?
@TheEducatedBarfly4 жыл бұрын
No, it has been running beautifully and still going strong. Best buy we've made. But, we don't run it all the time. We run it and make a bucket or two of pebble ice that we keep in the freezer and empty and turn the machine off in between use. Plus it is a little noisy to have standing around on idle.

@TheEducatedBarfly5 жыл бұрын
See that’s not the same thing, crushed ice works much differently in a cocktail than pebble ice does...then again this is a test for how deep you really want to go in your cocktails...
@colinwiener32685 жыл бұрын
The Educated Barfly it was part question when I formed the comment. Also, I’m a 17 year old guy who just got into it and is eager to learn more. Thus: what is the difference?
@TheEducatedBarfly5 жыл бұрын
Colmag how are you into cocktails at 17 years old? Or are you in a place where the drinking age is 18? But to answer the question crushed ice is well crushed and a lot of it will meat on contact with spirits this creating more solution without chilling as much whereas pebble ice is uniform thus melts more slowly and chills more efficiently
