No one that buys this machine cares enough about coffee to be able to tell the difference in quality if they were to implement fixes for the issues. For instance, the whole 8 oz isnt the amount of water that gets used to brew and therefore you cant make coffee recipes, doesnt apply because people will expect it to mean 8 oz of brewed coffee so that it fits in their mug. Girls will buy this to sit on their counter all pretty and brew coffee before they work, thats it. It's for the girls that use k-cups but now they bought this machine and they are 'saving the environment and plus it freshly grinds it for me and I can tell by the taste'

I think the absolute best thing about this coffee maker, is that it may inspire better ones to compete with it. Which would be nice
@Vortechtral
@Vortechtral 9 ай бұрын
Yes and no, there will be competition, however it will more or less do the same thing, grind the same way, etc. At the end of the review you find out why the machine, even though it's celebrity endorsed, is still cheap, especially since it grinds, and brews. timed brew etc. Hell Kurieg's, the bog standard no bells or whistles I believe costs around the same price point. Sometimes price can tell the whole story. If there is competition, we can only hope they do it right. Make it bigger, make it better, easier to clean, easier to use, better quality parts, however I don't think this will arrive ever.

I feel like the design is so elegant but a lot of corners were cut on the inside in order to get it down to the $100 mark. If they just doubled the price, and put a proper burr and basket in there, this would be a really good coffee maker.
@cynrok
@cynrok 6 ай бұрын
There are several brands that make the same type of machine. I have 1 about 10 years ago and it doesn't have any of the problems here except for you have to clean it every single time. I don't think that is a problem that can be fixed with this type of machine.

@@magicvibrations5180 I feel like they could have kept the $99 price tag if they did physical buttons instead of capacitive and then put a steel burr grinder instead of the ceramic one. Even a cheap real burr grinder would make a significant difference in the taste of the coffee.

I finally got a hand grinder and beans the other day. The grinder is cheap, and not particularly well made, but it gets the job done. I don't think I can easily go back after this. Thank you James for broadening my horizons.

This is a great example of how fair James is to whatever he’s reviewing- treating them and their efforts with generosity while also holding them to a standard based on what they’re up to. I will say it would have been a bit more useful to have some more medium to darker roast coffee to test this thing would have been maybe more instructive all around- both its flaws which are not fixable (as you said) as well as maybe a touch better flavor.
@finder2267

Machinist/Mouldmaker and fellow coffee person chiming in on the burr point: Yes, indeed, manufacturing a proper burr from a hard material like a hardened steel alloy or from a ceramic requires expensive machining time, expense in the material, and expensive cutting tools to cut that hard material. A manufacturer will not take on those costs in a design unless the product was a higher end item. There is simply no way around the costs associated with that critical component. Those false burrs are almost always cast metal or MIM (metal injection moulded): Cheap and fast. I think this seems like an interesting addition to the space, for someone: Not for me, though. Personally, I prefer making my coffee manually or, when at work we have the serviceable-because-it's-free Keurig. Cheers!
@5naxalotl
@5naxalotl 9 ай бұрын
all very true. but i think it might be viable if they sold replacement burrs for nearly the same cost as the entire machine. the psychology here is that $100 seems steep when you make the initial purchase, but after a couple of years of wishing your five cups a day were a bit better, $100 can seem quite trivial in the grand scheme of things. i mean, it still won't be a good coffee maker, but it will be a lot better. also, people might be attached to the _style_ of the thing, and an upgrade for a beloved coffee maker would be an easy xmas gift in a family that struggles to buy tasteful items
@davidwhite533
@davidwhite533 9 ай бұрын
The cost would be the barrier. I do wonder, however, if 3D printing might not be a solution. If a suitable material could be utilized by the printer, then it's just a question of getting the templates down right. That might be an insurmountable barrier, though (plastic "burrs?" not sold on this...)
@ALAPINO
@ALAPINO 9 ай бұрын
@@davidwhite533 There are many additive processes (like 3D printing) that can produce suitable burrs in a suitable material but, again, cost is prohibitive. For the most part, those processes are reserved for rapid prototyping and engineering samples for testing.
@ALAPINO

@@5naxalotlTotally agreed. If the popularity of this unit explodes, I don't see any reason why a small shop out there couldn't make quality burrs in some factory in say China or Taiwan and sell them as upgrade kits. Heck, the likelihood that a burr already on the market can fit this unit is pretty high. Then again, with the lack of adjustability that upgrade might just be a little silly. All this aside, I'm still excited because this means there are clearly companies out there capable of a machine that 'can' do these things for a decent price point. I'm surprised a pop-up/indie coffee company hasn't created an open sourced modular coffee station/system. Enthusiasts have, been for years, modifying espresso systems with control units, pressure control, etc: Seems like a market perfect for that entity. *needs caffeine*

Or possibly releasing a “Pro” version for those who care about the machine being more than just pretty? Exactly, french press coffee is divine. My coffee grinder is Krups that I’ve had for years. I have a Keurig for “pod” convenience, the same coffee brewed in the french press is smoother without any bitterness. Almost a guilty pleasure, and I’m worth it! ☕️

That's my exact recommendation to anyone wanting to get into coffee - especially those who don't want to dig deep into knowledge with a desire to "figure shit out": A hood entry level grinder and a French press, because it just works every single time. It couldn't be simpler. It's easily the highest ROI in coffee. James has even proven that it's basically fool proof, so it's super inviting for anyone. As an added bonus: If you one day fancy having the cleanness of a paper filtered coffee, just take a decent and big enough filter (I like the Melitta 104s), rinse it and put it over the plunger, and then slowly and carefully press the coffee through the filter. You don't even need a silly purpose made "French press filter". It works really well. Just takes a minute. The French press is just super versatile and good. I have no idea why people even bother with automatic coffee brewers. The cost to quality ratio is atrocious in comparison.

I have been hand poring coffee through a paper filter for 10 years ever since having one in a London coffee shop. Japanese $14 spout kettle, ceramic cone $8, 250 un bleached paper filters $12 and a $100 grinder thats running as good today as 10 years ago when I bought it. I will never look back. You can control the grind which is the most important part. The strange thing since doing coffee this way I have stopped having multiple coffees during the day, this one morning cup is so substantial and potent and potent not in strength but just in how it sits. honestly all someone needs to upgrade their coffee from a Mr. Coffee style brewer is a $5 melitta brew cone, some paper filters, access to hot water, and a good burr grinder. If they're willing to grind their coffee with a hand grinder, that's $30-$50, which is what they're going to spend on a new Keurig anyways. When I swapped from using a blade grinder to a burr grinder I learned what good coffee can taste like.

@@chemistrykrang8065 Of course, I did the very same thing. I'm intrigued. But I'm unlikely to spend that much $ when I'm happy with what I already have.

Yes! As soon as I read about the machine, I wondered whether James would review it. (And hoped it might be better than I guessed a bit of $99 Walmart kit could be.)

I don't drink coffee, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching this review! I've heard of James online - and it's clear why he's a legend. What a watchable presenter!

I have the Cuisineart Grind and Brew bean to cup machine, which makes a 12 cup stainless steel thermos flask. I actually really love it. On a work/school day it does breakfast for a family of 6 and the coffee it produces is more than good enough for after dinner too. It's not endorsed by anyone murdered in a Scream film though so

I think this machine might be prime for modding. (I.e. the group of us who use air pop makers to roast beans and fiddle around with lower cost experimentation). I don’t have one so I haven’t examined the mechanism yet, but an aftermarket burr cartridge and potentially some adjustment in size might be doable. And then the basket might be able to be refined. So possibly some decent aftermarket upgrades. Taking out the controller and tossing in an arduino would probably be ideal, but it would also go beyond average consumer installation. I don’t really mind most celebrity endorsed products. Usually they tend to be on the lower end, but not always. Most of the time the manufacturer has the product designed, pitches the idea to the celebrity and gives them some minor style choice decisions. So there is not much the celebrity was involved in. At the end of the day most of it really depends on the manufacturer.
