I am enduring a humid heat wave following a tropical storm. Alberto gave me a little over an inch of rain. They say there may be another one next week. A break from the endless heat would be nice. Very refreshing that someone openly talks about the money aspect! I found around 50 hammered coins and a few Romans on one farm and just kept them in a cream cheese tub for years. I realised that they're not much more use there than they were in the ground. So I gave all but two coins to the farmer as he genuinely appreciated them. I'm not a collector, I just like finding things. Really the coins should be in the hands of museums or passionate collectors where they're appreciated, and if they're willing to pay some money for them then all the better. But listing and selling individual items doesn't look like much fun to me so now the next cream cheese tub is filling up...

Your channel is my favorite metal detecting channel. If I had a way of buying stuff online, I would buy one of your crusty old coins. I'm a little old fashioned and I don't do online shopping. The oldest coin I have is a 1788 Massachusetts one cent piece. My uncle found it when we were detecting in town. We thought it should stay in town, so he gave it to me. 1788 is pretty old for Massachusetts. 😅

I’ve been detecting 32 years and very lucky to have found some great things over that time with the permission I have . I’d say if you want to sell some bits to fund your channel do it . I never sell anything I find, it’s cataloged and loved and will be passed down. I love the history and research. Here in Bristol we just don’t have the volume of finds as say E Anglia to have the luxury of loads of duplicates.

Hi Alex, When the fields dry out.... we all know that after a couple of years detecting the same areas. Today one of my favorite fields is being plowed, I talker to the farmer and start detecting the 2 hot spots, I found not so much, less than expected, less and less year after year.... 16 quid already for your Constantin coin, wow, amazing, your subscribers like you!

Nature of the hobby. You may be lucky to find something really exciting everytime you go out......9 times out of 10 you wont. One bit of advice from a person who has learned the hard way over the years and perfected the eBay system subsequently. Send the coins in a box - never an envelope. Agreed Alex, people always ask 'have you found anything worth much?' They're astounded when you tell them the actual value of things. A friend found was lucky enough to find large hoard of civil war coins, he did well out of them, but still, not as much as some people thought.

Iv been metal detecting for 6 years and love the hobby, iv never tried selling any thing , I love to collect , until 3 months ago , I was lucky enough to find a edward the 111 half gold noble around 2 years ago its been sitting in the draw,, a local gold dealer was in the area so i took it to him for a valuation , he loved the coin and offered me £1200 pounds , i walk out of there after haggling with £1500 , im using every penny on going on a holiday to Madeira

It amazes me that Roman coins are worth so little! Really crazy. I hope you do well on EBay! When I sell on there I do all the postage on the Royal mail website and ask them to collect from the house, therefore tracking is online so will be in your emails. You can ask for them to bring a label if needed otherwise you can print it off yourself. Just an idea. 🙂

I agree with you, Alex. The chase of finding a hoard are very slim. Saying that, my Wodan head coin sold for £500 and my Celtic unit sold at Spink for £1000. I have recently found a King Offa silver penny and Spink value it between £500 and £800. The money I make i put back into my hobby. Upgraded detector, new pin pointer, new wellies, gloves and a finds pouch. So I am not making money, just reinvesting it. Take care and best wishes.

I've been detecting for less than two years. I have around seventy gold rings. Many of them have diamonds. The total weight last time I checked was nine ounces, probably over ten ounces right now. Even if I sold it all as scrap gold I would probably net around $8k (u.s.) that's only four grand a year and if you count the money spent on detectors, repairs, gas to and from the beach, well it's a wash at best. On the other hand if I sell them as jewelry I could get three or four times that. Maybe.

The history and knowledge gained is valuable itself. Can't imagine anything more boring than smashing a golf ball round with a stick all morning on some over priced course. Hi Alexander. A bit of a curve ball for you? Instead of using Ebay, maybe set up your own selling website🤔 That way you could sell mix of finds and antiques? Personally, I've never sold any of my finds, rather I exhibit them for the museum charity I run and engage people with their local and social history. If you really need extra bunts, instead of selling your finds, why not do talks to local interest groups and charities about metal detecting? It's a hugely popular subject. I run a speaker group. Good speakers charge anything from £75 to £100. A couple of those in your diary every week might help👍

Especially if there exists an income readily accessible. As I see it you offer a product that includes excitement, suspense, historical identification and background. Let alone personality and a certain amount of personal vulnerability and most importantly time. By all means, if there’s a market then it would be sensible to approach it as a businessman and to do so without apology. Go forth and let the market bear the burden I say.

If you want to get "rich" metal detecting you should do beaches. I'm not sure what rules/laws you have in the UK but I have a friend selling gold for thousands of pounds every year that he have found of beaches here in Sweden. But I don't enjoy detecting on beaches myself so I will never get rich 🤷‍♂️😆

The more people find of a type the less it becomes worth. Supply & demand, kinda fing. Having said that, there is still potential where scarcity is concerned and if the condition is right there will always be value in some things. Like you, I'm a world-class magpie but it occurred to me only the other day that I don't so much as look at my coins, some of which I know are of value, so why not cash them in? Unthinkable a short while ago, but holding onto them just for the sake of it is pointless. It'll help restock the cellar, for a start! Can you make money from detecting? Not in a meaningful sense unless you get lucky, but you CAN recoup some outlay

I have sometimes made extra cash by finding lost jewelry for people which is also a lot of fun when you get an important item back to them. Detecting parks for modern cash can do pretty good although I usually end up donating it to charity's. One time I posted pic of bucket of one cent coins and whoever came closest to guessing how many chose the charity ( it was almost 5500 ) so 55 bucks went to kids hospital and I got the karma 😉

I’ve bought Roman coins and hammered coins from Scotland a few time they were lots of coins not a lot . But I found that it’s not easy getting them the shipping goes okay but after it gets to the US takes forever to get them to my address. Not sure why .

Bloody bizarre Alex. How wrong is it that a Kew garden modern 50 pence piece sells for hundreds of pounds and 2000 year old coins sell for pennies. One of my farmers summed it up a couple of years ago. He couldn't and wouldn't accept roman history. Only interested in post medieval. Let's go on the beach and hope for some spendable coinage.NOT. not about money Alex but holding it in your hand and wondering who lost it thousands or hundreds of years ago.that shiver running up your spine is worth a million pounds my friend.😊😊

metal detecting isnt about going out to find great things everytime cant run a channel based just on roman coins dont work like that ya starting to sound like your only in it for good finds.metal detecting is about digging the good and the bad being out with nature enjoying the hobby.so anoing when people start to just go out looking for epic finds only.nearly in every one of your vids its all roman and hammered coins.most dont find even 1 a year and your moaning 😂😂😂😂😂🙄

I've never been into detecting thinking I could make money especially when I collect coins and I know what I pay for them theirs just not enough money in it but I still love doing it also started using Google earth to have a look for what appear to be abandoned fields or where their was habitation.

I don't understand why coin collectors don't buy off e.bay, I have spoken to a couple of coin collectors and they all say they don't trust e.bay, maybe a small fair could be better.
