This resin experiment looks to see if you can make resin pigments with food colouring. Resin opaque pigments can be expensive and sometimes difficult to get hold of. I tried lots of different techniques to make home made resin pigments, before I hit on this one.

Hi Steve, after watching this one.... I made a paste with powdered paints (to be mixed with water to make the water paints for children). It's nicer than when I was using the powdered paints like mica powder. I'm really pleased with the new pigments I'm able to get this way. Also, by using this method I'm not getting any gritty grains in my resin!!! Thanks so much.📽🎥🎶🎶🎶💋💖

As some others have said, the one you said was green looks like an orange/brown colour when you demolded it. At 3:23 I can see the green on the plastic & tools but the colour in the pot is a dark red/brown. Bit confusing. Looks like a good idea for some of the other colours though. Especially white!

I’ve used acrylic paint to color my resin. I usually add it directly to the A/B mixed resin. Sometimes I add to much paint and the resin doesn’t bloom or even (EGADS) doesn’t set. I’m going to try using acrylic and only part A to make the pigment dye. Hope it works. I’m love your videos and I’ve used several of your projects. Watching from Valdosta Georgia, USA.

great one, Steve! I plan on doing just this sort of thing with my micas and raw pigments I've collected. Planning to make pigment pastes. Who can beat customized color at bargain basement prices? I happen to have some titanium dioxide to use here as well as all other sorts of goodies to try. I also want to try some of that Wite Out correction liquid as an experiment too. And there are folks on KZbin who have done experiments with ketchup, mustard, koolaid powder, and tons of other things. Can't wait to do more playing on my own!

This is a really interesting idea 😀. Is there an alternative to using part A of the resin? I use quite a lot of ready made pigments and just thinking that if I were to use part A of my resin to make my own custom colours it will affect how much I have left to pour with. I suppose just making up a couple of colours in small quantities would not make much difference but larger quantities would. Also, does the part A resin for the mixing have to be the same brand as the resin used for pouring? I have some resin I bought last year's and don't like it, so I could use that. It is a different brand to my main resin, so there might be a reaction maybe?
@uniquecraftsnl

Hi Steve, like the video. I have a question. Is it possible to use the titanium dioxide as a powder in epoxy resin? Like you would use a mica powder for instance. And, have you ever tried making pigments from natural materials? Cruhed charcoal for instance. I bet you can get a lot of different kinds of gray and black with that. Or dried seeds of fruit, mix it in the blender or something and add it as coloring. Or dried fruits.. blueberries, strawberries, plumb.. I'm thinking about trying that myself too. haha But I was just wondering if you did anything like it before?

Your green came out as a burnt orange on my screen... The rest of them are just beautiful. I've been experimenting with liquid food coloring in my resin and found that the 2 or 3 drops added doesn't seem to effect it. It Cured out just the same as with any other liquid colors I've used. Just thought I would pass that along.

@WendigovanStudio
@WendigovanStudio 3 жыл бұрын
There's a massive difference between powdered and liquid food colouring. Liquid food colouring is water-based and resin and water should never be used together, as the water will stop the resin from curing properly, leaving you with a sticky mess. xx

Have you tried mixing the powdered coloring in a bit of high percentage alcohol (91% is good, 99% is ideal but hard to get these days) to create either an alcohol ink or just to turn it into the paste instead? I'm fairly certain that it shouldn't hurt the resin since you can use alcohol ink in resin. I think you'd need completely airtight containers or dropper bottles if you use the alcohol though, since it would evaporate otherwise, but it might be easier than your method and you could always add more alcohol if needed as long as the color stays good. Experiment if you haven't, please? I'm curious. 😅

Pretty sure Steve only used part A to make the colours. Then puts it on a pot. When he needs the colour, he makes up the resin as usual, so part A and part B, then adds a lil of the colour from the pot to the mixed A&B. Does that make sense? 😊
