Good work. Suggestion: place the torch under the cup. Heat up the cup. Let the cup heat up the metals. I think you're heating items up backwards. Suggestion 2: use oxygen / acetylene torch. I don't think your hot enough. Try it. Good videos though.

You definitely need a closed crucible with a heat source you don't have to hold by hand to melt brass. I've seen a guy do it with pewter, but again ... closed crucible. He dumped the resulting ingots out into the snow instead of putting them in water. Now that was fun to watch.

A chemistry teacher yelled at me when I didn't hold the hot part of the flame on the test tube. The whitest point in the flame is the hottest. Perhaps that might make a difference if smaller masses of the brass were used. Probably not, but I was reminded of that chemistry teacher yelling at me when I watched this. Good show though. I like the brass nuggets too. Thanks for sharing.

brass is a composite made up of lead, copper, zinc & iron- all with different melting points- you can't just simply heat brass and get good results- you're burning out one element to reach the melting point of another (comparing iron to lead for example) and super heating zinc will create zinc gas, very poisonous and you can end up with zinc poisoning (been there, done that- not fun!) did you research smelting brass before trying this?

This is really interesting. Here in the U.K., melting silver outside in the cold, the brass end of my map gas torch melted and fell off into the crucible of silver. I was gutted- I’d ruined the silver and melted the torch! Watching your video, I now think with a new torch, the silver and brass mess, might be reheated and silver remelted and poured out from the soft (but not pourable brass). I like the natural looking shapes you got from your brass. I think little pieces might be cool incorporated into jewellery or made into organic looking earrings or for a necklace. Or sunk into resin, in wood.

A turbo torch or even a better bernzomatic would produce much greater temps with mapp.. also I think the brass was oxidizing keeping it from melting properly.. I found this out through trial , frustration then anger and finally i seen the error .

@Freeisbetter86 Жыл бұрын
Havent tried yet, but probably not as the melting point is pretty high but in a furnance Yes !!
@markboreham13003 ай бұрын
Tell your friend that Melting steel especially stainless is a complex industrial operation involving a blast furnace and other heavy industrial equipment. If it’s not done correctly you just end up with a pile of shit especially if it’s too hot. It really isn’t a back yard thing if only for the safety aspect , if you drop a crucible full of molten, you’ll wish you hadn’t and it’s unlikely you’ll get it to temperature anyway. Gas and oxygen would be too expensive and charcoal would be too time consuming and you’d use a lot of it.

I melted bronze (five old pennies) with a map torch. This was with my crucible shielded on all but one side with fire bricks. Even shielded with the fire bricks, I also couldn't get copper to melt. I think if you tried a much smaller volume of brass and shielded the crucible with fire bricks, you could get small ingots. I poured my molten bronze into little molds i made from Plaster of Paris.

Hi! Wonderful watching your Brass Melting Attempts! I'm to represent most #Paasche VL Airbrush Gun Owners. Sometimes I'll drop my airgun and accidentally "push" the long needle all the way thru the enclosed top brass cone on impact. Used to take a pair of pliers and attempt to "close back up" the small hole of the brass cone a bit. After watching you work your brass, I believe I'll have an easier time of re-shaping my brass cone if I "heat" it up first. _Wish me Luck!_

I've seen a very basic, on/off adjuster knob only MAPP rated torch tip used in a small forge that did have a blower fan introducing ambient air to propane, for some forced air effect. Connected with a 6' hose to 20# propane tank, I've seen it run for 8hrs at a time many times, for perhaps 10 years? And it shows the use, but still works fine. Probably something to do with being in a climate controlled room on the end of a house. (with a STRONG exhaust fan!) Versus being in "outside" in the shop with the big forge and anvil. That bldg only has 3 walls.

That is not the correct torch head for MAP gas. The map gas torch head sort of mixes it with oxygen and you get a hotter flame. It looks like you're using one from just a regular propane torch

Found your channel watching copper pours. Gotta say, respectively, I think you’re doing it wrong. I have bricks that I keep my crucible between to help circulate heat and trap it around the crucible/whip dish. Works great for any metal except steel or iron. Yours won’t melt out in the open because the crucible itself needs to be heated to just above the metals temperature. And heat needs to be constantly on the metal even after melting clear until it pours into what ever mold you have. If your mold is graphite. It also needs to be warmed up. Butane torch will work. If not heated you could get burned by spatter as it is very “fizzy” in cold graphite. I use petrobond sand. Doesn’t have to be heated. And allows you to use whatever shape you’d like. Also, if you use a bit of flux/borax on your metal as it melts. It will draw out any impurities and help maintain your melting dish. As well as help the melting process even out throughout the metal itself. Anyways, hope this helps. I hit the 👍🏾 and 🔔 Thanks for sharing.

Real MAPP gas has not been available for many years now, that junk you have is NOT MAPP and is just a rip-off of MAPP's reputation of being very hot as opposed to propane! Look at how it's labeled, MapPro (Map-Pro) or some other silly way of saying Map (with only one "P") depending on the brand. The stuff sold today is barely any hotter than plain propane but usually costs a lot more so don't fall for the hype just use Propane and save some money, you will be hard pressed to see any difference except for cost! Or better yet (MUCH better!) as others have said, Oxy/Acetylene if it's available Real MAPP went out of production years back when it's main ingredient became far more profitable in the production of a type of plastic, what's called Mapp by using deceptive label names (for example Map-Pro or something similar) is a rip-off!!!!!

You're using a bernzomatic ts4000, anything over aluminum should be burned with a hotter torch or else you run the risk of greater in-efficiency. Bernzomatic has a good big brother to the ts4000, The bernzomatic ts8000. I've used the bigger ts8000 to melt a little over 40 grams of copper in a reasonable amount of time, I'm sure it has more in it to do more still. Hope this helps someone, great video bro.
