This is how I was taught to approach oil painting. It helps when you only have an hour or so to finish a whole piece. We were taught to sketch over blocking later and only if needed. This is SO INSPIRING! I was struggling for days to get a proper rough sketch (fixing the composition) for the upcoming CNY artwork and I was rather devastated because I got really swamped for my full time job which makes me even more stressed out and getting more anxious of not being able to complete this! I couldn't sleep yesterday so I randomly did a rough sketch and I GOT THE COMPOSITION RIGHT. It's TRUE that you mentioned about letting go of your doubts and TRUST THE PROCESS. Really really really appreciate this video, it really made me feel less sucks about myself haha. I would always come back to this video to remind myself to trust the process and learn along the way regardless of the outcome! Thanks Sam!

to add onto the bit about how each painting gets you closer to what you want the piece to look like- one of my favorite quotes about this is from the drawfee redrawing old art video where karina is talking about how she loves redrawing her old art because every time she does that she can get a result closer to what she’d initially imagined the finished piece looking like
@ayaneagano60593 жыл бұрын
I’m finding that for characters I prefer to do a sketch, but for backgrounds and landscapes, I find that it is *_much more motivating_* and significantly more fun to *_NOT_* do a sketch with lines. Because when I do a background with lines, I sort of stop that thought process, and I feel shackled to the lines rather than being able to optimize the background to fit the characters more/be more expressive. It really does feel more like sculpture! With the lines, it just felt like I was doing over what I already did with the backgrounds. It’s actually a lot faster for me! I remember a while ago when I did a non-loose sketch for a painting, and I gave up during the flatting stage. But when I drew three backgrounds without a sketch recently, I was so motivated that it reinvigorated my love for drawing and made me want to experiment! It’s what made me like backgrounds and landscapes. Thank you for this: this approach really helped me.

I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now since it showed up in my queue and your art is full of life. There seems to be a lot of emotion in it with the way you play with light and color. I've never noticed it before in other art but yours in particular really plays a lot with what looks like pastel and high contrast colors which somehow manages to make it come alive from the environment that isn't there. Amazing. Not sure how close I've gotten to what you're doing but it's been enlightening. I haven't drawn anything in over a decade but your way of teaching and encouraging while showing how your process works has been making me want to pick up a pencil again. Thanks for being you!

I have a lot of unfinished pieces, most times I get stuck with them half way or even 3/4 through because I either doubt I'll be able to complete it as the version I envisioned, or because it doesn't seem "perfect" enough😅 when in reality I would've learnt and progressed so much more if I went the extra mile and actually finished all of them. Not done yet but: It’s also a very nice technique to focus on Color (-Composition) and on Values. When sketching I feel like we often tend to forget about the coloring, even though colors are having a huge impact on how the composition will look/feel like. I mean, just as an example, but you can directly see in the color blocking stage, if your warm and cold tones are balanced and giving the feel you’re looking for. Idk 😄 hard to explain what I mean. probably very important to have tried this technique

I don’t think sketching is nessecary when you’re an advanced artist. It’s only nessecary when you are studying certain objects, places, and people. Or when you are sketching an idea for a piece of work. But, if someone or yourself is a beginner, you might want to sketch before you paint. It’s a learning process, just take baby steps. I am an art student/hobbyist at a college, who plans on placing emphasis on different aspects of the drawing in order to achieve desired results. A common myth/misconception is that when you draw, you can’t have a phase when your art is ugly in your drawing process.
