It is unclear why the speaker does not assume knowledge of the basic multidigit multiplication algorithm, but rather uses a difficult restatement of that algorithm using powers of x = 100..

Applying the binomial expansion of (80+1)^4 and expressing 80 as 2^3*10 (80+1)^4=2^12*10000+4*2^9*1000+6*80^2+4*80+1=40960000+2048000+38400+321=43046721 80*43046721=3443737680 2-3 minutes ... your working was incredibly tedious It's very easy mental arithmetic really.
