In 2019, the British Army will introduce new Physical Employment Standards (PES) for all soldiers involved in close combat roles. So, gone are the British army’s old sit-ups, press-ups and 1.5-mile run test, and in come running with weapons, dragging casualties and vehicle casualty extractions.
These changes are designed to make sure soldiers are battle ready and conditioned to perform. But how difficult are these tests? We deployed our junior digital writer, Daniel Davies, to find out.

I did my selection for the British army in 2008 carrying the water cans and the 70kg dead lift are not new things also the 70kg dead lift looks easier as when I did it you had to lift it above you're head and hold it there for 3 seconds so if anything this is easier than it was in 2008 .

Did the new "test" at my unit a few weeks ago. Proper joke, especially the run, me and 2 mates literally jogged the 2km with no effort whatsoever in just over 11 minutes. Still had 2 minutes to spare. I think you could literally walk 2km in 13 minutes.

@Nigel Mansell i seen the new rifle in a soldiers hand its completely diffrent looking part from the bullpup part it looks like a m16 sa80 hybrid now. I do agree it was a failure and should have been scrapped from the beginning but i guess it was politics and prideful stubborn plus that the french also made there own style bullpup rifle made them keep it for rivalry reasons. Honest the rifle was ment to the best in the world and possible could have its design was ment to chamber a completely different round that Britian invented but America forced us to use the 5.56 round and it completely ruined our future battle rifle, Vickers Arms knew if they started from scratch it would cost them a fortune so they kept most of the rifle part from changing the barrel etc to fit this nato round and ended up with a piece of junk that they paid a fortune for lol.

This is ridiculous, the US Army are getting rid of their PFT and bringing something out which is very similar to this, been Infantry in both militaries and an AAPTI (for mi yank brothers - All Arms Physical Training Instructor i.e Master Fitness Instructor), I can honestly say that both test are fine and dandy when in garrison, but for the yanks the new test time frame will be, and for a full Bn of Inf ya gonna be looking at best part of 3 weeks to complete, not to mention the funding for all the right gear for each and every unit to possess. Also what happens when you go on deployment/Tour and you need to conduct a test and you don't have the monkeys and parrots to conduct said test! The old APFT for both militaries were ideal to test the base level of fitness to see where the hairy ass squaddies are at, and in order to advance up on that by conducting further Advanced Combat fitness tests which are relevant to the corpse you serve in! I don't know 19yrs combined Infantry I might be just talking crap lol what do I know! I just think they should keep the APFT and come up with ACFTs. If you can't pass a 1.5mile run Brits/2mile run Yanks I believe you will definitely struggle with this stuff.

it is designed to be gender natural and equal for all ages. each role in the army has their own specific testing criteria based on said role. and women definitely do not a relaxed deal out of it. it comes into force in jan 19 and supposedly takes about 5hrs to complete all the tests. and just to clear up, its conducted in combats, boots, helmet webbing and daysack with weight.

Done it very recently and passed with flying colours. A girl aged 18 sitting at 5’2 and weighing 48kg managed to pass this test. Keep in mind that she can barely hold up her rifle because she quite literally got no muscle on her. The fact this is the final test before being potentially sent to war is embarrassing.

The Troops of yesteryear never lifted anything according to these new tests, where as they always lifted stuff, like log races, lifting jerry cans, and the firemans lift, etc it wasnt just pres sups and burpees the fact is the modern recruit is not good at Aerobic exercise and more suited to anaerobic excercise and would prefer to drink protein powder and lift weights you only have to go down the Gym and you can see what i mean. Obviously they wont say that but thats the fact.The modern recruit is unfitter than before so they have to adjust to it or they wouldn't have any recruits at all.
