Hi Jennifer, I'm from Brazil, and there's still a lot of cursive writing there. now I live in us and I discovered in everyday life this difficulty people have in understanding cursive. right now I'm learning to write print so that people understand me. Thanks for this class!

Yes, on applications (if it's still on paper), only printing is allowed. Handwriting varies, especially in cursive, so misunderstanding happen more in cursive. Ha ha.

I am an English learner, and, the cursive writing style has been indecipherable to me, which I occasionally encounter. It occurred to me that why not just practice it, found this video, and this is exactly what I needed. This video makes cursive from a massive mess to something enjoyable. Realized that just looking at people’s writing brings me a sense of joy. Thanks a lot!

Hi. Thanks for sharing that. Yes, there's something special about reading a person's handwriting. It's more intimate. It reveals more. My penmanship teacher's writing is a work of art. I love seeing such beautiful lessons. I'll share a short video soon as a follow up to this one. My handwriting is harder to read, but it's not terrible. Ha ha.

Everything has its flip side. While new technologies allow human beings to be smarter, quicker and more efficient, it has us lost skills that were previously of high price. I visited a couple of week ago a Museum of Prehistoric Times in Saint-Germain- en-Laye (France) and I was struck by the incredibly beautiful objects Neolithic people could make from stones. Their know-how however became worthless as bronze tools and weapons spread everywhere. They were better, cheaper and allowed new kinds of tools to be made. A whole civilization so disappeared. I'm 73 now, and cursive writing was a major skill when I was a schoolboy. This time might be eventually over now. But I feel lucky though, because I have seen and been part of different cultures.

Yes, I feel the same. I feel lucky to know what life was like before cellphones and the internet. Our way of life was very different back then. I think cursive should be taught. It doesn't have to be preferred, but the practice teaches fine motor skills. I think a person's personality comes through their handwriting.

Cursive is on the decline here in the U.S., but I still think it's a useful skill. You can take a printed text and copy it on to a Word document. Change the font to cursive. See if you can still read it. That's one way to test your ability to read cursive. :) Thanks for watching!

I loved seeing the various examples of cursive writing. The only snag being is that some of the words were very difficult to read. Having said that, if we were exposed to hand-written communication more often, it would not be hard to decipher. 😁

Because of the Covid, my School Language depend on Universite, close down for a while. Thereafter nothing was the same, even later we must attend with a mask. For two years I have typed more than usual. Handwriting by hand was dropped out and we got used to typing and typing over and over again losing my ability by handwriting. In the meantime, we attend school only for the final tasks. I passed by the last year without a problem, but this year barely I had written by hand a result I realize I had lost the ability with my handwriting. As the result, It was funny when I did my last writing exam, I had jotted down before copy on the Oficial Sheet three or four times. Although I type so quick, from then I jot down every day four times more than before.

There were a few words in that first example that threw me, the handwriting was just a little to tight and undefined for me to make sense of it all but I got the general gist. It’s crazy that some people couldn’t read any of that. Plus how are people creating their signatures nowadays if they can’t write cursive? Surely they’re not just printing their name as a signature?

I learned English as a foreign language at school. In Uzbekistan. There never even stood a choice to write in cursive or not. We were taught only to write in cursive. May be because being native Russian speakers we almost always use cursive to write. And I was surprised to know some native English speakers couldn't understand some cursive letters. I guess smaller case letters f, r, s, v, z and capital letters G, J, L, Q and S are the toughest. Cause they look pretty different from their print form.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer Жыл бұрын
It's also generational. I had to learn to write cursive and continued to write in cursive, but my children only learned it briefly. Now they type everything on their tablets for school. I think Russian handwriting is beautiful, but I admit that I sometimes have trouble understanding it!

I mean, it was not hard at all as Brazilian because almost everyone writes in cursive except little children. It was a bit harder than usual because English in not my native tongue so there were some words and abbreviations I didn't recognize so easily, hahah You have to see doctors cursive here, it's so bad our country had to pass a law obligating them to write legibly and after that most of them just print everything. I like cursive though because I think it adds personality to writing, otherwise everyone would write the same way.

In the past, there were serious problems when pharmacies couldn't read doctors' handwriting. The problem has been solved with digital submissions now. Prescriptions are given via computer. The truth is that many of us who still write by hand tend to mix cursive and printing. I like the printed capital "A" more, for example. When I write for myself, it's really messy at times. I make more of an effort when I write for others. Thanks for watching the new video. By the way, I should have mentioned that some call cursive "longhand," but it's not commonly used anymore in American English. "Cursive" is usually preferred. It's what they call it in the third grade curriculum.

Doctors write iin bad hand writing so that the patients do not go beyond what is told to them verbally. the prescription is not for eyes of the lay person. In cursive writing, we have the option of doodling, sketchng, diagramming , symobolising.. Nothing like putting pen to paper. Following you, my reading has improved, just finisheed a 250 page book on early european thought to Alcuin to Gebert. I was reading in bed, supported by word look up on the mobile, Luxury, tea and snacks on demand-- my housekeeper spoils me no end. Going on from English to German to get your equivslents in the original language.. Take care and enjoy the break. 🚗🚘

Hello. I suggest this wording: I love strapless gowns, but in the past I couldn't even think about them. I'd say this to the speaker: The truth is you could think about them. You had the ability to think about them and consider them in the past, but you didn't want to. It was difficult or uncomfortable. Better to say, "But in the past, I couldn't stand the thought of them." = I didn't like the thought. I wasn't able to think of them without being upset.

The amount we write by hand can vary from country to country. In the U.S., kids start working on tablets (especially iPads) in elementary school. By high school, everything is submitted electronically. They type everything. My kids printed in their early years. They learned cursive in third grade, but then no teacher required it after that. American schoolchildren start typing on keyboards very early. I learned to type in high school on an old-fashioned typewriter. My children learned to type on tablets and computers quite early.

 @JenniferESL Wow, I did not know! We are allowed a tablet not even in all schools. And they write exclusively in cursive from 1st class, and preparation for this begins in kindergarten, only there children don’t write, but draw figures: circles, squares, zigzags, emoticons, christmas trees and so on. There are special hand-writing worksheets for this. The funny thing is that in foreign languages we write also in cursive. The only problem is that on the contrary, it is difficult for us to write printed letters, the hand itself switches to the cursive.
