Can You Repaint a Metal Roof?

Very little information here. I painted for 14 years and now I’m roofing full time. First question. Will exterior acrylic paint stick to a pvdf coating. If not than you are into a real beast of a paint job. The supplier is going to recommend some sort of direct to rust (DTR) epoxy as a primer. That is usually a 2 part with a pretty short pot life and will cost between 60 to 70 per gallon and only be available in 2 gallon kits. epoxy has a completely shitty finish quality to it so they will recommend an industrial grade urethane as a top coat which can cost up to $100 per gallon ( also has a short pot life) This means you are spending big money on coatings and you have very little time to get it thru your sprayer before it becomes impossible to spray with. Everything in the painting world is based on blaming the installer for the reason the coating fails. Power washing probably isn’t good enough so they will want it abraded first. Then power wash or some other cleaning method. Then only can be applied within specific temperature ranges. Also these epoxy and urethane products can get bubbles called outgassing. Trust me, not a single certified install is going to tackle a project like that for less than 3-4 dollars a square foot. Congratulations you just spent a lot of money to have a roof painted that isn’t even going to make it look brand new. Far from it actually. It’s going to look streaky and rather shit compared to the way the panels looked new. That urethane is going to fade badly within 10 years. You are going to regret spending that much money on painting your roof. The only way I could see this being a relative successful project is if you can just spot prime any rust or corrosion with a product like Cover Stain. Than putting a single component acrylic paint over it. Perhaps a product like PPG Pit-tech. Somewhere around the 40-50 per gallon range.

I'm painting my roof. I'm not sure what paint is on it. it's Was Painted In the 80s. I'm going to power wash it and try to abrasive it with wire brushes. Then coating It with Two Pack High Solids Fluoropolymer Coating. Will this be good? I'll also won't have to pay for it 😊

yup you're right on. as far as coating PVDF id say avoid it. being a painting contractor I've had one fail and never again will I do one. it was coated with an acrylic DTM paint.

I was hoping to hear what kind of primer and paint to use. I have a ton of blue metal roofing that im gonna use on a hunting cabin and just want to spray it a different color. Knowing the kind of paint and primer would have been helpful

So in a nutshell, what's the best paint available to order when ordering a metal roof? I think most roofers watching this are thinking "why would we ever get to this point about having to repaint a beautiful standing seam lifetime roof?".... But I get it...😉

Hey thanks for answering that question so thoroughly. I was surprised to learn that SS roofs are occasionally re-painted, and I was even more surprised that chalk & fade issues do occur within the warranty period. I had assumed that since a manufacturer is confident enough to offer a C&F warranty for X number of years, it would never happen, at least in the warrantied period. So what happens to that one roof out of many, to make it fail the C&F test? Thanks, Tim

No problem, Tim! Yes, there are warranty claims made due to chalk and fade occasionally. The paint company tests the material in tandem with the manufacturer and other involved parties to substantiate the claim, then takes appropriate steps to fulfill their warranty obligations. A paint system can chalk and fade prematurely due to a bad batch of paint, or even certain environmental elements. Man that warranty issue sucks. I purchased a home that the previous home owners put on a Grey Metal roof while everyone in the subdivision has a black roof. So I couldn't paint my roof black to blend in with the rest of the homes for 30yrs? Wow!

I just had a new standing seam roof installed and the GC put his ladder on it to work on dormer and now two good rub marks just above gutter. Will he be able to spot paint these so I’m not looking at them everyday????. What a shame on a new roof.

@@TheMetalRoofingChannel When people take the time out to watch a 13min video titled "Can you repaint a metal roof" they are DIY viewers. Your video in the first 10 minutes is just a phone conversation with someone saying things about roof warranty, and in the end just saying hire a professional. If someone had a warranty on their roof or had the intentions of hiring a paint crew to do the work, they would not be watching yt vids on the subject. They would just call the roof warranty to get fixed, or just call a paint crew to give them an estimate. Want to help your viewers, post a vid showing type of primer and paint can be used on a metal roof. R Panel is the most common material used in roofing applications. You dont have to choose a brand just list the types that can be used. Prep for paint checklist, and the pro and cons for each type of primer or paint type you choose to go with. Some have to be rolled on, some sprayed. Others have better UV results, some crack and peel over time, others dont. Ect.

This video is directed at people who are unsure if metal roofs can be repainted at all. Not everyone would immediately call a contractor or even check their warranty documentation. Mistakes do happen. Our goal was to help homeowners know what is possible with metal roofing systems and how to avoid making those mistakes. It's why this video is entitled "Can You Repaint a Metal Roof?" and not "DIY Metal Roof Repainting Tutorial". I appreciate the thoughts you shared, and I will consider doing a paint products review video as you suggested. Maybe it's something we can cover in the future. anyone can put a metal roof on and it cost me $2,000 . when it looks bad I promise I'll not spend a week trying to paint a roof I'll just replace it. if you need more than $2000 in metal then your house is to big. you are just keeping up with the Joneses. ps I heard the part about the logo and that has me thinking. Trump 2020 would look pretty good on my roof.

A professional doesn't need to be hired. You follow the manufacturers recommendations. Prepping the metal could be a lot of work. However, cleaning the metal roof should add years to the paint life, as keeping your vehicle clean will make the finish last years longer.
