I own a SBDX001 for last 15 years. The price was around 2000$ while the Sumo was around 500$. This is more like factor og 3 to 4. Only my SLA033 Cpt.Willard can sometimes replace the MM300. I owned the sbdx017 and loved it. I sold it when it was discontinued as after 18m of daily use someone offered me more than I’d paid for which seemed too good to pass on. I had a speedy and a grand Seiko at the time too. In the years since I’ve owned dozens of watches from Christopher Ward and Sinn to Tudor, omega and JLC… but I just rebought the mm300 and I love it. I think aesthetically it’s just one of the best looking watches ever. Luckily I picked a nearly new one up for the same price I’d sold the previous one so I don’t feel like I’ve missed out too much (I gained ceramic bezel and sapphire but lost the marinemaster dial). For me I can only wear one watch at a time- so it makes no sense having more in the box than on my wrist.

That's what i find confusing about this. The MM300 is above the rest of the Seiko dive line and is irreplaceable.....but plans on picking up another turtle. If you're trying to decide between just the Marine Master or a whole collection of Seiko watches, I think it really comes down to whether you're primarily a one watch guy, or someone who likes to have a watch for any occasion and swap through different ones. If I had 3 grand to spend on watches, and that was my total budget, I'd much prefer a collection of 4 or 5 watches to just one. But that's just sort of my personality.

Spot on with your analysis here. Not to knock the “lower” level Seiko divers, but the MM300 is several steps above anything else they have. It’s almost a step above som Grand Seiko divers. The Sumo is great, though. The closest I came personally to it would for me be the Shogun, but that’s still a few steps down.

Go for the watch you’d love to have. You’ll never get bored with it. My green Seiko MM300 looks great and feels even better. No sharp edges hence no scraping. Since I got the Seiko, I hardly give attention to my other watches except to help them run every so often. Which, I think answers the question on settling with 5 other watches as a compromise. You’ll most likely end-up preferring 1 over the others and leave the latter collecting dust. And if this happens, going for the holy grail would have been the right decision after all. Cheers!!! 😀

@wpherigo14 жыл бұрын
Maybe. To me, the guy’s question really sounds like “I’ll never be able to afford or justify buying a Marine Master. Can the Sumo make me happy?” This is a contentment question. Can you be happy with any one thing after you see the next shinier thing? One ding I have against a lot of watch KZbin channels is the discontent and materialism they encourage. Don’t you think we need to minimally be happy with what we can afford, and then be thankful if after a long period of patience we can afford something better? Most of us just can’t afford to be buying and selling watches all the time. We have to learn contentment.
@BruceWilliams4 жыл бұрын
I agree very much. Everyone should learn to be grateful for what they have. But I don't agree that channels promote discontentment or materialism. I also think if you aspire to own something. Don't just be grateful for what you already have. Work hard and make that goal happen. The feeling of accomplishment is incredible. I never thought I would ever buy a 500 dollar watch at one point. Now thanks to hard work and effort, I can spend much more.
@wpherigo14 жыл бұрын
Bruce Williams - I’ll say that channels don’t intentionally promote discontent and materialism. But I’m not sure that hard work will always get you where you want to be. I've owned the 017 for a few years now, also own/owned a sumo, turtle, several skx and vintage 6309 slim and 7002. The MM is a major cut above all these in quality. To me the name “Marine Master” was something they had that was unique to the brand and you knew it was something special (more expensive). I don't think you truly appreciate the marinemaster until you've worn it. The only possible compromise for $3-4,000 to me would be three watches to replace it - a SBDC061, SPB097 and a SBBN031. I just pulled the trigger on the SLA023, it's been my grail for some time and I'm worried that if I don't get one now, I might get priced out of the Marinemaster range entirely. Personally, I find MM300 too bulky on the wrist. It is an awesome watch, with even more awesome movement, but it is simply too thick for my wrist, with solid, but light bracelet that is simply not on pair with the magnificent case of the watch. On the contrary, the so-called MM 200, Seiko SBDC061, suits my taste perfectly. It is neither too large, nor too small, neither too thick, nor too thin...finish is NOT on the pair with MM300, of course, and the movement is the plain 6R-series, but overall - IMHO, it is THE perfect Seiko diver. And for the difference in price, one can easily get the fantastic SPB051 and still have some change to spend on couple of Turtles or Sumo's...

I really like the colourway of the SBDX025/SLA023 (pretty sexy IMO) especially the gold tone seconds hand and '300m' text, sadly, however, the 'Marinemaster' lineage and overall aesthetic has been spoilt by the application of the Prospex logo on the dial and crown (and no Marinemaster text on the dial). Hey Bruce, very topical for me. I got myself the SPB103 and I love it - I have put a deposit on the SLA021 (as it is my grail) and I am "super excited" to hopefully get it in a few months. For me, I got the Sumo, but I still really want the MM - if anything all the more. The Sumo has given me a taste but I'm thinking its not the cigar!? Great work as always. Hope you and your family are enjoying the season and wish you all a great New Year.

Rather the MM300, especially the new one but prefer the MM name on the dial!

How do you call the hand set of a Marine Master?
@GapBahnDirk3 жыл бұрын
I have had a Marine master SBDX001 since 2004 and I will not part with it. I just bought a modern black dial "Willard" to supplement it.

Big question is though Bruce... Will you hold onto it (the MM) 😉

The Seiko marine master could not be compared to any other dive watch in the Seiko range, except for Grand Seiko. The only rival will be the Omega Seamaster.

That's my problem with the MM300, it looks like every other 300$ Seiko. For that kind of money there are better options like Sinn or Doxa.

The problem is that I don't have $3k to spend on 1 or multiple watches and I do want to buy the Marinemaster !

Would I buy one marine master or many more affordable seikos? I would buy one affordable seiko and try to be content with that one. If not compared to whatever else is out there, an SKX or a 🐢 can be perfect one watch collection. They are at a level where there's nothing really lacking to them. I mean a stamped seiko clasp isn't practically any worse than a machined one, just as painted lume markers on the SKX aren't any worse than applied polished ones. In my opinion, these aspects we look up to on expensive watches are more of a differentiators that stand for higher level of human effort. They don't make a watch a better watch, they make it a better jewelry.

Well said. At a certain price point i become very uncomfortable wearing a watch as functional timepiece and it loses the very purpose for which they were created. I very seldom wear my submariner when boating , swimming or biking as a sports watch. My bad but it does seem to happen to allot of us.

MM but that’s just me...Sold off 5 GS’ and am left with the MM. At least until GS releases a new smaller diver :D

I prefer the SLA033 ‘Willard’ as I think it is more interesting, more beautiful and better finished than the MM and is far more versatile with almost dress watch looks. Willard vs MM would in itself be an interesting video!
@onemoretime80454 жыл бұрын
Richardgm99 I agree. Willard would win out hands down. It is the thinnest watch to house an 8l35 and has a caseback allowing easier service to the movement. The hands have better finishing and it lacks the X on the dial that many dislike. It may lack a ceramic bezel but its not needed as the low profile of the watch mitigates bezel strikes.

I can't have a Porsche, so I'm happy with my Honda Accord 6MT. I can't have a MarineMaster, so i'm happy with my Gen 2 Sumo.
