A tip on this if anyone tries it - DEFINITELY cover with plastic wrap. Otherwise it dries out quickly and you'll need to repaint with more gel, as I had to. It works best when wrapped!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this - just the other day I decided to start cataloging my old 2000's gen1 Littlest Pet Shop collection from when I was a kid, and I discovered that one of my playsets, despite having been kept in a closet for years, had one side that was COMPLETELY sun damaged in this exact same way, with the pink having turned a vibrant orange, and I figured that there's be no way to fix it. Now I know that there's some hope, though!

OMG a vintage LPS collection! I had a few sets as a kid: bunnies, gerbils, hamsters, kittens, and a turtle... I loved the little "cages" they came in back then.

So glad it turned out so good! We Barbie collectors also use peroxide for fixing discolored / yellowed Barbie torsos or accessories and it works perfectly.

Glad you tried this. Definitely doesn't just work on white or gray plastic as you can see, however it CAN lighten colored plastic a little so its good to still be careful, but it's still a great method :) Also a tip: you can just use the peroxide gel without oxiclean. Most people just use that.

Thank you! I’ll definitely be doing it again on some other sets!

You can definitely let that sit longer than 6 hours. I follow a couple people who have let their bad projects sit for as long as 2 days in the liquid H202 Retrobrighting method. You'll also get a better finish out of the Novus if you polish with #2 until it's dry, pick a clean part of your cloth, and polish it until it's all off, and THEN apply #1. If you're washing off the cream, don't be afraid of hurting anything. Grab a child toothbrush and use it exclusively for washing off this sort of stuff and you won't have to worry about damaging your toys. Stuff a towel over the inside of the compact and go for it. These toys are much more durable than you think

Glad to see that this technique worked! :) I am so happy to see you collect and restore the vintage Polly Pockets - seeing those compact toys (classic Polly - glad I got to experience them before the switch to the rubber dolls) getting love always makes my day. :D Looking forward to your future videos!

Wow Holly ! Again a great video. I was so excited to watch it because I bought a really sundamaged "Mr Fry's restaurant". Since then I've been reading a lot of experiences and receipes about retr0bright on plastic toys. It is the first time I can see a video of somebody experiencing it on a Polly Pocket, so I am So happy you did it ! I have often read that it did not work well on pink plastic. Personnally, I've tried two receipes to restored m'y "Mr Fry's restaurant" and as I couldn't find and buy a 40 volume in France, my experience failed. Therefore I decided to try it again with a peroxyde cream. My haidresser gave me a sample (it was so funny to ask it to her and explain thé reason why). Anyway it did not come as succeful as your compact. And I even started to get White stains on it 😥 So again congratulations for doing such a good jod ! Thank you and keep it up. I loooove your videos !

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with it! It can definitely be taken too far - and, yeah, things that are 30 years old, I'm not sure how perfect we can really get them. It's hard when certain areas are more damaged than others. I definitely do have some whiter ("cloudy" is the word I used in my video) spots, which is one of the risks. But I figured it was worth a shot for the sake of science so others can see the two methods and the pros + cons of both!

Really impressed with your tutorial and using the transferable tips from the consoles for this. I have worked for many years on vintage vinyl dolls but many of them have hard plastic accessories. You're a star 🌟 Subscribed!

There are also several channels that use straight liquid hydrogen peroxide in a glass tank with uv light strips. Investing in some of the light strips might make things easier and I know that the light strips definitely take less time than relying on the sun alone. Hopefully this helps!
@PocketVintageToys3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The reason I can’t do that with these is they would be submerged in liquid and these sets have stickers internally for their background art, which would be ruined if wet - hence the gel method! But yes, that works well for things you can take apart.
@nicholejoslin43243 жыл бұрын
@@PocketVintageToys You're welcome! The light strips might still be a good thing, though, since you can rig something up for them to hang from and then "set it and forget it" instead of having to rest your nail lamp every time it goes off. No liquid baths required! Thank you for the wonderful videos!

This is common restoration for My Little Ponies. Using the 40 peroxide gel and UV light is enough done a few times and reapplied ever 12 hours. It seems like this is more an acceleration of the brightening process, but the 40 cream should be enough.I often give my ponies an oxygen clean bath 24 hrs before I do a peroxide treatment. It takes a bit, but works wonders and is not as dangerous as your liquid.

I have a couple sun damaged Polly pockets. Most of my sets are good, but I have one pink funtime clock that is a little bit orangey on the top and I have a Magical Light up mansion that is quite sun damaged on the back side of the roof and by the pool. Sanding the mansion would remove the texture so that's not really an option. Maybe this technique will work. Only thing is I live in Texas. I'm a little scared because here the sun is powerful as heck! Have you ever fried an egg on the sidewalk? Because I have seen it done!

You could also try with creme developer instead of liquid so that you won’t have to make a gel
@PocketVintageToys3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I’ve seen that done too and contemplated it when I picked up the developer (peroxide) at the store as the creme version was sitting right there. I wanted to try the *original recipe* and I like how thick the gel is, but we may try the creme next when we’re through the gel.

Hi Holly! Thanks for this. I tried using retrobright / hydrogen peroxide on our vintage polly pocket toys. And it actually worked. But the problem is, the stained / yellow color came back after around 4 months. Did you experience the same thing?

Anybody else watch Brad Mondo or dye hair and make this 😯 face when she showed the 40 volume? Lol
@PocketVintageToys3 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha! When I purchased it, the woman at the store said, "Ummm.. I don't mean to be that person, but, this could be REALLY damaging" and the relief on her face when I told her it wasn't going to be used on my hair was hilarious! I explained what I was going to be using it for and she was like, "oh yeah, I've heard people do that for old Nintendos!" 😂
