This is the best explanation against shooting a 40S&W to a 10mm gun. I watched several videos on You Tube advocating shooting a 40S&W to a 10mm gun. Glocks can safely shoot 40 s&w, other pistols not so much, shooting 40 s&w out of a 10mm Glock you lose about 15 fps, so not much, just because someone can make a video about something doesn't mean they know what they're talking about, as far as accuracy, it's barely effected.

A couple of years ago I ran about 100 rounds of 40 through my 10mm as an experiment. Other guys have shot 25,000 rounds of .40 S&W out of their 10mm pistol and have never had any extractor problems. The recoil pushes the brass back toward the extractor and doesn't put any wear on the extractor. What would happen if you shot some 10mm ammo that had brass that was trimmed a little short? Maybe, just maybe, a 10mm would make a fair choice for a shtf weapon. In a pinch being able to shoot 40 cal if 10mm wasn't available to protect yourself or feed your family could be a benefit. As long as you can obtain the proper ammo I agree there is little to no reason to shoot ammunition that is not designed for the weapon.
@twestgard23 жыл бұрын
But if that’s the strategy, you’re best off to select the most common caliber around, which for most or all of us is 9mm. It’s definitely not 10mm or .40S&W.

This too is one of my pet peeves as well. The 10mm is one of my favorite rounds so I too often hear people claiming it perfectly ok to run 40 S&W in their 10mm and when I bother to respond I'll point out everything you did in this video. Technically it works, just like it technically works firing a .380 Auto out of a 9mm Luger, but it's not a good thing to do unless it's an imperative (i.e., post apocalypse supply issues or something of the like). The only reason I can figure why shooting the 40 S&W out of a 10mm has become so popular is the lack of commercially manufactured practice/target rounds, which is why I got into hand loading. I hope your video becomes the stock response every time somebody asks if it's ok to do.
@highxj Жыл бұрын
It's nothing like shooting a 380 out of a 9. The 380 case is straight walled and smaller diameter, and will bulge and possibly rupture in the fatter 9mm chamber.

I own 4, 10mm pistols and 1, 40 S&W. I am a 10mm guy but there are times where a .40 S&W is appropriate. That's why I bought the 40 and I may purchase another. The 40, on average, is still better than a 9mm. It's on par with a 9mm +P or +P+, but it leaves a larger hole. The same technology that advanced the 9mm JHPs also advanced the 40s and 10s. So, if people want to shoot 40s, get a pistol made for it. I have a Beretta 96A1 and may buy a Glock, G35 Gen5 w/MOS. This is because I like the .40 S&W as a second tier weapon. I can't stand the 9mm. It's too weak. Manufacturers keep adding +Ps or +P+s to it to make it usable. Not so with the 40. The Underwood 40 S&W, 155gr XTP moves out of the muzzle at 1,300 fps with 583 ft. lbs of energy. That, is very usable and it's hotter than most commercial 10mm rounds.

Common sense, no nonsense, experienced answer. Thank you. I once accidently fired .380 ammo out of a 9mm. Yes, it will fire but the discharge does not always cycle the slide and you will get Excess powder residue so that when you go back to 9mm the gun jams.

you are right on people do not understand about your point even if it still shoots good the extractor and espeically the chamber will over time be damaged. you know its about gun owners think they can save money by not having to buy two guns. They do not understand a revolver handles a shell size different the an auto

Good info, Hunter. There are lots of KZbinrs showing the world the wrong thing to do with your 10mm. Shoot 10mm am from your 10mm platform. Buy a 40 Cal to shoot your 40 Cal ammo.

From an engineering standpoint. I totally agree watching this after watching a guy unloaded .40 in a glock 20 10mm auto... I may be a programmer and gun enthusiast but I understand SPEC is what it is. When you start messing with things out of spec you get unexpected results over time. These new guns are pretty much polymer plastic you run .40 in a 10mm enough it will probably blow the side of your frame out. Gases have to go somewhere.....

I don't own either caliber ; but that was a very clear explanation of the issues . I can't see if people care for their firearm , they would do that. Maybe to save your life if zombies are approaching. Before I knew better , I have dropped a round in the chamber on a 760 remington 3006 pump and maybe my 1911 a couple of times then jammed the bolt or slide home. I learned how un-cool that was.

Yes, the push feed bolts so not care for snapping the extractor into the extractor groove. I have done it myself, as we all have to learn. I would agree, in an emergency you do what you have to do but for standard range use and such keep the .40 out of your 10mm.

Never did this but always wondered... I think the 5.56 vs 233, 7.62 vs 308, 45LC vs 410 shootgun, etc... was pushing me to risk it. Like the rifles... the gun is made for the more powerful round so it show take the 40 without blowing up {which might be a topic all on it's own). After your video... will stay away. Your right and it's pure commen sence. Not sure how the judge 45LC/410 fits into this but a assume the 410 round has something to due with it. Thank You!

I think you probably hit the nail on the head. There's such a thing as close enough and things can be within a tolerance and be fine. But if you have a pocket protector and you think Kimber is the only gun worth buying yeah whatever eat me

Good information. I've seen case head separation from 40 S&W that was accidentally fired in a 10 mm steel frame pistol. Lots of smoke from the gun, no harm done. Glad it wasn't a polymer frame gun. Amazing all the videos by people that should know better. Incorrect headspace is dangerous. At least they're not playing with rifle pressures. If the gun explodes, 35,000 psi might do as much damage as 60,000 psi. Why put yourself in that position? We should practice safety, not do something unsafe, just because you can get away with most of the time.
@monteh8422 жыл бұрын
@Guerilla Radio Not making anything up. Safety with guns is no joke. I still have the ruptured case & separated rim, pistol & witnesses to the event . Yes, it happened & could happen again. Warnings can be heeded or disregarded.

I had a hillbily friend who trimmed off a 3mm long ring off a steel 10mm case. He then inserted that into the chamber. This allows him to get proper headspacing for .40 S&W when he wants to use it, because it will headspace off that insert. Pretty slick, huh?

I wouldn't trust it.
@jeffersonsharp22923 жыл бұрын
Yep, you aught not to. But it’s absolutely not hard on your extractor. The chamber erosion will happen slower than you’ll shoot out the rifling. Chambers can be cleaned. On anything other than a Glock and maybe a Springfield, (I don’t know on the Springfield) the firing pin may pierce a primer or fire a round that somehow didn’t get under the extractor. Yep, I aught not too, but in my Glock, I’m still gonna if the need arises.

I have decided to put a Tangfolio 10mm on my wishlist. Price is right, lot of features, robust and it is DA/SA. I will shoot .40sw through it but not exclusively. Shouldn't be a problem on that metal frame and I can replace Ejectors if needed.
@rangehot2 жыл бұрын
There are more issues with running the wrong caliber than just the ejector.

I agree with getting an aftermarket barrel to run .40, and I assume the short and weak comment is tongue in cheek.

If you don't already know about it, may I recommend that you research the origin of the 40 Smith and Wesson? In doing so you will quickly discover why it is often referred to as Short & Weak. Cheers! 🍻

WELL SAID. I want A Razorback so bad. I've owned a few 10mm pistols but always wanted the Dan Wesson. I currently have a Kimber TLE in 10mm. Good shooter once you put the correct recoil spring in and tune the extractor. lol For some reason Kimber thinks mim extractors are good idea.
