Hahahahaha so true. Ultimately, it’s a good story that counts in terms of good filmmaking. Image quality is less so

try selling a film to someone with a whole bunch of noise, terrible lighting, terrible audio, bad acting, and wrong camera shots. When you're making a film it's not all about the story, it's not all about the gear, it's about using all of those elements together in a cohesive matter to get the most out of your story. Every aspect of a film is just as important as a script and vice versa

Ron Coker yer I was quite impressed. I think v log just needs to be exposed properly... 1-1.5 stops over what you'd usually do.
@Ronbc000
@Ronbc000 7 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, 1-1.5 over. Remember with Log, bright light = 11-13 stops DR as opposed to lowlight 7 stops DR. The trick is to shoot test footage with a range of exposure to establish what works with what.

Not sure if it was an option back in June 2017, but if you edit in Premiere Pro you can just drag and drop the 10bit footage into your project, play it back and edit it without transcoding. So far I've only tried this in DaVinci and it doesn't work. You do need a powerful system (great GPU) to edit that in real-time without rendering but that goes for any 4k footage honestly. But, thanks for the tip on over-exposing v-log. I tend to under-expose in my footage on other cameras in general just to make sure nothing is blown out, so I would not have made that decision by default. Good to know.
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 5 жыл бұрын
Hey bro thanks for your comment. Yep you’re spot on the new firmware with the option to shoot at 4K 300mbs All I codec is a game changer but you’re right you need a hectic computer to edit it with (not to mention faster Sds). I’d recommend shooting at that higher bit rate if you’re doing V-log cause as you can see some of this early stuff at the low bit rates is super artifacty. Cheers.

Karan Singh. I think you should take a look at the canon 800d... or 700d or... T5i... not sure exactly what it's called. But all those canon cameras are really good. I'd definitely recommend getting at least a on camera rode video mic if you're recording audio. Nick really likes the Panasonic cameras. The G85 or the Sony a6500 seem to be really good options. Hopefully one of those cameras are in your buddy.

Really nice vid Chris! I feel like playing around with the settings some more (making it look less sharp for example) and maybe using an ND Filter for a better DOF, could definitely make the GH5 useable for a sweet feature film. Felt like the background in some shots was too sharp for a film-look.

Yes. But you can't sell it to Netflix or something because the quality isn't up to their standards so you'll need to do your own selling. Also, don't put white crop bars on the feature, export it in the aspect ratio of 2.35:1 if you want widescreen so people can watch it on their 21/9 monitors. :)
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Remco, Yer I actually looked into that... and it's a really good point. It's interesting though because I read up on the specs on Netflix and they seem to require high bit rates, 4K and a log picture profile which technically the GH5 is capable of... That being said it's something that's definitely worth looking into. VOD is most likely where I'd sell the film so it's 100% something to keep in mind. In terms of the crop bars they were just there so that the audience could tell the difference between the two cameras. Thanks for your comment. Hope you liked the ep. :)

I don't see why Netflix would refuse a film based on it being shot on a Gh5. Especially in the near future where you'll be able to shoot 4K at 400 mb/sec. Most cinemas in the world are still only 2K. This camera can also shoot 6K using the full 4x3 sensor and a anomorphic lens.

where does the gh5 fall short AFTER fw2.0? Camera Requirements 4K Resolution: • Camera must have a true 4K sensor (equal to or greater than 4096 photosites wide). Recording Format: • Minimum of 16-bit Linear or 10-bit Log processing • Bitrate of at least 240 Mbps (at 23.98/24 fps) recording • Recording format must be set to either: RAW (uncompressed or lightly compressed sensor data) Log color space (i.e. S-Log3, V-Log, CanonLog3, REDLogFilm, BMDLog, LogC) • No looks or color corrections should be baked into the original camera files. • Files must maintain all metadata (i.e. Tape Name, Timecode, Frame Rate, ISO, WB, etc.) Aspect Ratio / Framing: • Aspect ratios greater than 2.00:1 must be evaluated and discussed with Netflix for approval. • Framing chart must be shot before principal photography begins, and processed through the dailies pipeline which will be shared with editorial, post-production, and VFX.

Really interesting point David. I have installed version 2.0 but haven't played around with it too much. What I will say is that the intra codec does seem to play nicer in Premiere. I think for me the biggest flaw with the GH5 after having used it for a few months is the dynamic range. V log is ok but not as good as S log or C log in my humble opinion. The GH5 is a fantastic camera for this price but I will probably end up renting a URSA mini pro or c300 mark ii to shoot my feature project because of the dynamic range and the built in ND's on both those cameras. Thanks for your comment. ✌️

Great video Chris! :) I own the GH5 now and am loving the image quality also. I've been thinking about shooting a feature film in the next 12 months on it - I was wondering what reasons you wouldn't shoot a feature on it? Or why you'd prefer a different camera? Keep up the great work!
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 7 жыл бұрын
+Lennard Smith thanks mate. 😊 umm to be honest the biggest thing is probably the dynamic range... I've been doing a bunch of tests in v log and grading it... dunno how I feel about it. For the film I think I'll be shooting a lot of natural light without heaps of control so dynamic range is important in that regard. I ended up buying the GH5 and so far I'm really liking it. But for the film I'm considering maybe just hiring a higher end camera like the Fs7, f5, c300 mark ii or even the Alexa mini. The c200 looks really interesting as well. I need to put s budget together first. 😊 Hope this helps.

Theres a lot of noise on the train shots. just look at the black areas of the picture. on the first shots when the guy sits on the park there are artifacts on the black portion of the picture (vlog/ Color correction error?). I'm not saying you can t use this camera, as a matter of fact i've shot many music videos on the GH4, what i'm saying is that the key is knowing what to expect and how to post process your footage
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 7 жыл бұрын
+Westside Films yer I completely agree! ... i think it's a number of things but mostly my error. The stuff on the train was shot at ISO 200 so it's not like the camera can't handle low light situations... The reason it's so noisy is that we were underexposed for V-log... I'd say we were probably underexposed a stop in general... so that's only exacerbated with V log which you need to over expose by 1-1.5 stops. I was actually really disappointed at first and considered not releasing the episode... In terms of the artifacting on Josh's shirt I noticed that as well... I think again this is possibly because that shot was underexposed or because the 150mbs codec isn't enough for the 4K v-log at 10bit. A lot of people have referred to the current codec as "sucking an image through a straw"... Hopefully when Panasonic releases the new firmware update the Vlog artifacting will be gone... I must say it was quite hard to grade. I have a fairly high speced iMac and it was struggling. Probably crashed on me 5 times or so. Workflow is obviously really important when buying a camera so I'm trying to work these kinks out at the moment... Anyways hope you liked the episode. 😊 Thanks for your comment !

Hey Jingcho you may be able to tell from the footage but we actually didn’t have an nd filter on the day... Depends on your budget but in Syd Hoya nds are usually pretty good. One thing I will say is that the latest firmware that allows you to shoot in higher but rate in 4K is a game changer... you need faster SD cards (300mbs) but the footage is so much better. Grading vlog is much better as well cause I found in this early footage that it was really artifacty. Anyways thanks for the comment. Let me know how the film goes ✌🏻

The blacks are awfully noisey and I think i know why. If you made a custom curve aka boosting the shadows and lowering the highlights. That really detorirates image quality. I was wondering why this same thing was happening on my g7 almost regretted it till i found out the custom curves killed it. So if that is what you have done turn those off. Camera on natural settings almost all flat is perfect for my g7.
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 7 жыл бұрын
+And rew yer I completely agree... I think it's also because we were underexposing for v log. I've tested it out more and you have to overexpose by 1.5 stops or so to get a good image. I took the camera out again and kept it at ISO 400 all day shooting in v-log at 1080p with an nd filter. The image looked fantastic. No noise and no artifacting. I think that potentially shooting in 4K the bitrate might be too low for 4K and v log. Panasonic are updating the firmware soon so the camera can shoot at higher bit rates. I guess that's what I meant by "more tests". 😊 Anyways. Thanks for the comment / feedback. Working on some new eps now. ✌🏻

Hahah welcome to youtube man. The comment section is a beast of a butthole that will swallow all of your footage whole, and spit out every single possible negative aspect of it, in the form of text in a KZbin comment. This video was great. Organized very well and presented very well. You're a great presenter. Sure, I could critique the technical aspects of the footage you filmed, but that's not the point. I really enjoyed this video and how you separated the narrated bits from the filmed bits with the white letterbox. No shit guys, he's not going to submit a feature with a white letterbox layered on top of the footage. Sometimes the assumptions of internet people blow my mind.
@ChrisButel
@ChrisButel 7 жыл бұрын
+matrod haha thanks bro. Yer the reason I put the white bars on the footage is to match the style of the other vids which are more photography based. It makes a lot more sense in the context of those eps. I've been shooting a bit with the GH5 in Vlog lately and as long as you leave it at 400 or 800 ISO and overexpose 1-1.5 stops you can get some really good results. I also feel like one of the issues with this Ep is there's a bit of artefacting at 4K 10 bit but there should be a new firmware update coming soon which fixes that. Anyways. Thanks for the positive comment bro. Working on some new eps now. ✌🏻

I just watched a test the other day with some V-Log footy. I think what you gotta do is just expose for whatever is most important for the scene. If there's people in the scene, skin tones are priority. If there is not people in the scenes and its just outside or whatever, then obviously highlights in-general will be the priority. If there's lots of dark places in the scene, and no specific highlights to protect, then you'll probably over expose a couple stops or so to save the shadows. There's no right or wrong way to expose, but the internet likes to think there is :) Younger kids are so extremely obsessed with perfection, and getting the "best" camera they can for the money, that they lose sight of the important bits, like the story, lighting, etc. There's quite literally no reason actually why GH5 footage wouldn't be accepted by Netflix, or wherever, now that I think about it. Yes, there are "network standards" but those are typically more to do with timing (length of transitions for commercials, things like that, etc.). For something like Netflix, literally the STORY, and 1080p (with a couple other bitrate specifications I'm sure) is really all you need. And the GH5 is more than capable of that. So yeah man best of luck on the feature! Upload your journeys along the way!!
