@Samtagri6 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I’m not an expert or anything, but v-log is a logarithmic profile while other profiles are linear. This means that v-log will be much more capable to keep details in too bright/too dark areas. It is a way to increase the dynamic range. Switching a normal profile to a log profile will only deteriorate the quality further. You will never get quality back that didn’t exist in the first place.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Correct, except turning std to vlog and then back to rec709 doesn't deteriorate the quality as long as you software's working bit depth is 16 or more. (the footage's bit depth doesn't matter) Premiere Pro, fcpx and resolve work in 16 or more bits. But you are correct, the luts will not give you more data, it will just remap everything to vlog. Kind of redistribute the data to a new coordinates. Not magic, but makse it easier to work with.

thank you Joo, i just bought the GH5, and your the reason i got one....im in south africa....your LUTs will make me a better filmmaker around thank you
@QuicksilverSG6 жыл бұрын
This is ludicrously backwards. Shooting in Cine-D and converting to V-log in post will not improve your footage, it is one of the most misguided things you can do with a GH5. V-log L is engineered purely to maximize the dynamic range of IMAGE CAPTURE, it is not intended as a post-production grading format. This video's earlier advice is correct: With GH5 V-log L footage, you should use a calibrated LUT to convert it into Rec 709 format before attempting to grade it with other tools. But when you shoot in Cine-D, the footage is already in Rec 709 format, straight out of the camera, and it is TOTALLY POINTLESS to convert it into V-log format. If you do so, you will gain ZERO improvement in dynamic range and will only wind up converting it back to Rec 709 format at some later point in the grading process.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you will not recover any data you didn't capture, just like I said in the video. cine-d is not calibrated image profile. It's colour accuracy is really bad. When you turn it to v-log and then to rec709 with an accurate LUTs you will not gain any more data, but you gain calibrated (or at least more calibrated) colours and a format that is easier for grading. When it comes to DR cine-d doesn't have that much of a difference to v-log. Tested it my self and there is starting to pop up videos on youtube talking about the same thing. Like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmenqWinftGdkLs But I'm not here to talk about the DR difference or not. I will not take any stand on the issue. Yes, LUTs are good start, but one needs to be mindful of which LUT to use. There is big differences between different LUTs. The first video inside the course compares few different LUTs for V-log.
@QuicksilverSG6 жыл бұрын
If your actual concern is to improve Cine-D color accuracy, V-log conversion is a time-consuming sidestep. There's a much more efficient and accurate way to calibrate Cine-D footage: Shoot a standard 4X6 color chart (such as X-rite), download Adobe's free DNG Profile Editor, and make your own calibrated LUT. This will produce superior results because it is calibrated specifically to your camera's tone curve, shooting at the color temperature of those particular lighting conditions. Do this with every scene and it will give you consistent color balance across all footage, regardless of lighting variations.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Or shoot with a 32x16 colour chart and the x-rite with 6 different exposures and offset WB to four different directions, create the LUT with 3D lut creator, which is the best tool on the market for this kind of work, minimise any human interaction to the process and calibrate the LUTs twice during the creation process and voila you will get even better result. :-D
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
That's the process I used for the LUTs inside the KIT.
@QuicksilverSG6 жыл бұрын
That would work as well, but if you're going to that much trouble and expense, you can cut to the chase and produce conversion LUT's calibrated specifically to color correct GH5 Cine-D shot at specific color temperatures. That way you can work directly on Cine-D footage with no need to waste time round-tripping into V-log along the way. V-log offers no post production advantages over Rec 709 - it is NOT independent of white balance, is not standarized to anything more than Panasonic's proprietary specifications, and your monitor is calibrated to display Rec 709, not V-log. White balance is by far the most problematic issue with color correction of all non-RAW capture formats, with V-log footage just as much as Cine-D. Properly normalizing WB is the crucial step, regardless of your preferred camera profile.

I prefer it like this: (not a secret) Shoot V-LOG-L video clip of color chart in nice light. Take clip to resolve, go to color charts : Source V-LOG REC 709 REC 709 Use chart. Create cube file. Now you go to premiere pro to apply lut using lumetri, (not the first tab but the second (creative?)) Then go to first one (basic editing?) and do adjustments if wanted. Also in second tab can use sharpening ofc. Love the way it turns out!

Great tips.. had no idea about the channel mixer and will play around with that. I will say that i use VLOG-L exclusively now (don't bother with CINE-D unless you only want to do minor tweaks and need footage out faster). I do most of my color correcting then grading by Eye normally with scopes. The Skintone line is always the most difficult to adjust for and get correct. He is absolutely correct in converting the color space first this is logical because you edit for your output format. VLOG-L allows you to push the colors further then would be possible in a standard on Camera LUT due to its dynamic range. Thats the whole point of VLOG.. It would be interesting to see if Joo has a workflow for HDR color spaces yet however? ie a different LUT for those as that is becoming the next big thing.. I will say that I have been using Panasonic's Varicam 35mm to Rec709 Log (downloadable from Panasonic - sorry don't have the link currently) which is also usable on the GH5.. and with some minor tweaking afterwards also gives really good results for REC709 output.

I have signed up for the free sample lut to try out and still haven't received the download link so I can't comment on the product (or sample of it). However, I have to say, people need to understand no 1 lut is going to cure all and make everyone's image look magical and cinematic like on an amazing youtube video or a movie. Depending on your exposure, iso, white balance setting, 1 lut can look totally different on 2 separate shots. Heck even when the sun get's covered by cloud your shot will look completely different after you apply a lut. I think people need to learn the workflow to adjust shots prior to applying luts rather than rely on lut packs to make their images look like it came from Hollywood.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Hi, so you signed in to the course as email? I seem to have some issue with my email provider. Need to check into that. Send me an email and let me help you get the links. And I'm agree 100% that no one lut will fix your shot. Often when you apply the LUTs from the pack, your footage looks bad, but then you adjuste exposure and wb befor the lut and you get something totally different and good looking. The best results come from using the V-log and the LUTs meant for WB fixing inside the KIT, but it's but unpractical to be using them all the time. So Premiere's sliders shall do. :-)

@Joo.Works Titanium is right, double converting is not good thing. And you know that when you say : "...for example the CINE-D has less dynamic range than the real Vlog...but there is the trick to get most of it back..." Hmmmm. The "most of it" is enough ? Because we wanna save $100 for the Vlog upgrade ? Hmmm. You are a little bit one-sided, biased towards yourself. Because you dont think of disadvantages you don't really care, because the idea is "great". Nah its not so great at all. You convert jpeg to RAW then you edit it then you convert RAW to jpeg again. And you think this double conversion (compressions) is lossless or almost. I pay $100 instead, (for Vlog upgrade) its nothing compared to equipments and accesories. Then I shoot in RAW not in jpeg. Of course in video world its not RAW and jpeg, but at least everyone can get the methaphor. "I like saturation and redness..." - ok but you don't seem like a great photo/video artist sorry to say. It's my opinion, no offence. You should buy GoPro6 , you could get tons of saturation. Just don't mix the art and the technical details please, they are totally different categories. That's your mistake. Maybe other people don't like the lobster skin, oversaturated and underexposed picture, maybe they do, who knows. Some people above who say "I much prefer 4:44 to 4:48" , they are maybe right maybe not. But I think 4:48 is definitely not better than 4:44 , not at all. They have just differerent problems. Just stick to the technicals in my opinion. And saving $100 is not a great deal to a professional for "almost as good" and for "most of it" :)

No idea if this works: www.dropbox.com/s/dsa4jvpxte8nxjb/s-log2%20%26%20s-gamut3.cine%20to%20rec709.cube?dl=0 tried it with some random footage from the next and it looked ok. :-/ It's done by folloing numbers and just compressing the extra DR to rec709, so there might be some clipping and crushed shadows. So if there is you can apply a curve before the LUT to cover them.

@miriamvonhall15436 жыл бұрын
I have mix fillings about this vid. I totaly agree with you about color correction and color grading V-log. BTW: Travel Feels is Canon Fanboy so dont expect fair review and true information. I assume that he never work with real C-log, except 'desautrated standard ' so called log;) Now, converting CineD to V-log will NOT give you real V-log. Decreasing ISO will not give you V-log's Dynamic range. The reason of 800ISO for V-log is because you will get at that ISO the most of DR. Both of them are compressed which mean they loosing a lot of information which you can not restore, but V-log still will have more information to play, and without applied color theme. That's my 2 cents;)
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes you are correct. Cine-d's smaller DR and smaller gamut doesn't magically turn into more data with the LUT. But I do wonder about the native iso and vlog and DR. Charts of the camera's measured DR seem to indicate that the DR is better at iso 200 in RAW images. So I wonder why is the v-log's base iso set at 400... And when I do tests with the camera. I do not see that much of DR difference between cine-d (iso 200) and v-log (iso 400). Even V-log at 3200 iso doesn't show noticeable less DR after a proper noise reduction compared to iso 400. Of course, the noise floor is much higher, but I'm more interested in returnable detail. I measure DR as details, not as lack of noise, for noise can be fixed, lost details can't. I think this base iso & DR theory is more or less misunderstood... For if it doesn't show up in tests, well then it's a sign that we have probably misunderstood it somehow. This could be a nice topic for a video.
@miriamvonhall15436 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more! This would be very interesting topic, and frankly speaking i dont know why no one from Panasonic produce this kind of video, explaning how and why set you profile to record the best possible image qualitty. And i wonder why, because that knowledge will give Panasonic user's advantages of using their camera's.

You can approximate the color output of VLOG with what you have done but you will not have the same dynamic range in the footage. You will have less detail in the highlights and shadows. Also I would be careful of introducing extra processing that introduces banding. You certainly have achieved a nice final look in the footage here though.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Matt Drummond I would agree with you in the case of real cinemacameras, but in the case of gh5 the dr difference is not so obious. For example a "senior colourist" was not able to see the difference in dr between cine-d, hlg and v-log after the conversion to v-log. The banding is an issue if you work in 8bits workspace (the footages bit depth doesn't matter) but luckily all major editing softwares work in 16 or 32 bit mode. Thanks for your words.

Do you have any “tutorials” where you teach something other than “buy my LUT pack”?
@JooWorks5 жыл бұрын
:-D Have been thinking about it. And lately I have not uploaded anything else. But does "Buy my sony KIT-tutorial" count as a "something else"? Those are up soon.

A series is running in NETFLIX, "Deichbullen", which was shot with GH5. I don't think the recordings look cinematic at all. What do you think about?? how can it be that your recordings look better?

To what are you referring to? Channel mixer or turning profiles to Vlog?

Just watched this video and learned so much! I don't have the GH5 yet, only the GH4 and love it. Would these LUTs work on the GH4 by any chance? Thanks for your insights and for being willing to share them with us.

Hi Joo. Thanks for the value you're bringing to the community. I watched your video a few times (Paused and liked btw) but still having hard time wrapping my head around the whole idea. You mentioned that using the channel mixer is the right way without actually explaining why. I turned the internet upside down but couldn't find any piece of information that supports this idea. I tried it as well but didn't notice any obvious advantage over other methods. I usually use Colorista for my correction and grading but I tried it with the infamous "youtube way" as well. With some small tweaks, they all would look identical. Haven't yet tried the luts though. That might be a different story. Would be happy to discuss it further with you.

I don't know why there is so little info about the channel mixer (in general), but it's used for transforming different gamuts to others. Different gamuts have different colour primaries and with the channel mixer, one can modify the colour to others. If you look with the key word like: "colour correcting matrix" and "The matrix for conversion from (you camera's log profile) into ITU Rec. 709 RGB" You might find something usefull. This video was my first entry into the world of advanced colour correction (3D lut creator is the best software that there is for colour): kzbin.info/www/bejne/oImWmmZqrKumfZIm33s

Here is a great video of the use of the Channel mixer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4vZo51ulMRoqJI But there is no info about the gamut changing, but you get the idea of the channel mixer.

I appreciate the response and the information. Will definitely check them out. Would you mind sharing the footage you used in your video? I'd like to do some tests and comparisons with different methods. I've already done that with mine but yours would be great as the reference. Thanks

I laughed out loud so hard at travelfeels voice over. Nice to see a touch of humor and your character spice up the video. Beside the channel mixer method, I did a quick video testing typical luts to v log footage, including yours, mine, Panasonic’s and a few more. Nothing else. I have to say I do love your lut, both the normal version and shadow version. The only thing I’ll say is it shifts my images to a more magenta palette, but I have used it on countless shots that need a more precise skin tone and have a fast turn around rate. Check it out if you get a chance. Keep up the great work and thank you for benefitting the community and even my own work in such a beneficial way. PS exposure and white balance are always an essential and overlooked skill set to all film makers and their arsenal. The importance of this know-how can not be overstated.

Thanks for these words and great to hear that I''m of use. These new LUTs are just bit different, hopefully to the better. I should fix the magenta shift... one more task to the list. :-D

You can download free Panasonic LOG to 709 LUT from Panasonic website, its the best way to get accurate 709. Other then that cool video and some good advices.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
The Panasonic LUT is not accurate or then the world is really ugly. :-D I made a comparison video of different methods to transform vlog You can find the comparison here: joo.works/gh5-minicourse-part-2 it's the second video.

The lut doesn't work well with V-Log L at all. Crazy magenta cast. Works great on real Varicam footage though.
