American folkstyle has developed a pretty solid definition of what constitutes a slam. If you pick your opponent off the mat, you are responsible for his safe return to the mat. This means any uncontrolled drop onto your opponents head/neck would be considered a slam. Also, picking your opponent up and then using your body to drive them back down into the mat on their back/side/head would also be a slam. However, throws where the opponent is rolling, or thrown to their back without being driven into the mat, would be considered acceptable. These are the "slam" rules, but they are applied very strictly at the grade school level, moderately at the HS level, and very leniently at the college level. In college you pretty much have to be trying to injure an opponent to get called for a slam, but it does get called.

Really would love to see sport BJJ adapt the rule that if you pick your opponent up into a "slamming position" from guard or from a sub attempt that the match gets reset starting from a neutral standing position.
@jiujitsujunkee Жыл бұрын
In a points tournament, points should be awarded to the would-be slammer. I would almost go as far as saying in sub-only/cjj, getting a good slam opportunity should count as a sub. I've put you in position where I'm one step away from injuring you and ending the match, sounds like a sub to me
@tiggster99 Жыл бұрын
That’s hilarious man 😂 how is picking somebody up a submission when the person holding on could just let go? All they have to do is release closed guard and yet you think it should count as a submission? What a take
@vedu8519 Жыл бұрын
@@tiggster99 I didn't say it should count as a submission. I said if you are picked up while in a guard or a submission attempt the match should reset in a neutral standing position. Many aspects of sports BJJ are scored upon effectiveness and the ability to finish a fight from that position. If you are in a position to slam your opponent to hell, why should the bottom player be protected under that ruleset? Start them back standing...
@tiggster99 Жыл бұрын
I agree, start them standing again, it was a response more so to the reply on this comment saying a good slam opportunity should count as a sub. That’s just ludicrous as the guy in guard getting picked up could just open the guard back up again and be free to wrestle. Overall totally agree though can’t be getting picked up in guard and protected by ref just cause you don’t wanna open guard and decide to hang like a sloth 😂
@ZeusEBoy Жыл бұрын
@@jiujitsujunkee no then go to wrestling. slams are a part of wrestling not bjj. grappling is innately separate from wrestling. grappling is about moving on their body rather than moving thier body. if you want to slam go to wrestling or mixed. thats like me saying i couldve thrown an elbow in boxing so it shouldve been a knockout. no cause thats no longer boxing.
@jeffjitsuvideos Жыл бұрын
If it is a throw starting on the feet or a sweep starting in guard, it is not a slam. However, if you are escaping a hold or starting in turtle, and you pick your opponent up and slam them to the mat, that could be called a slam. Also, spiking is a separate illegal technique which can happen starting anywhere if you throw someone on their head.
@jamestk656 Жыл бұрын
I once had a guy right off the street try to slam me while I had my triangle on him but the coach stopped it in time. That was also the last time that I'd be unprepared for it because a coach won't always be watching. Now, I always underhook the leg hard at the knee if I get even a whiff of the other guy trying to stand. I have short legs though so my triangle tends to loosen when I do that due to having too much of an angle so I just try for a shoulder lock or arm bar instead.

If slamming isn't allowed and being in a position to slam does nothing for you, jumping guard shouldn't be allowed either.

the way i like to view it is: i go for a double leg (for example). pick them up and put them down in one continous, controlled motion=ok. no slam. i go for the same double leg but i pick them up, hold them there flr a second or two before throwing both myself and them onto the ground with force=not ok. slam

At my school we don't train for sport and anyone at blue belt or above is allowed to slam if the other person is stupid enough to hold on. Not allowing slams encourages bad habits that will absolutely carry over to an actual fight. Don't want to get slammed? Don't hold guard or underhook the leg so you don't get picked up. ANYONE who doesn't know Jiu-jitsu that you might end up fighting is going to slam you on your head. Better it happen a couple times under control on a mat than for real on concrete because you trained stupid habits.

how do they call it if the guy is in turtle and stands up and you use the freestyle wrestling arch return to the side. This can be done with a lot of control but it's got a reputation of being a slam even in some folkstyle wrestling situations. I've heard EBI requires a competitor to release a submission if they are lifted above the hipline. Perhaps simulating that a slam would defend the submission?
@bigbabbyjaime Жыл бұрын
What about suplex? Please do a video on can you do suplex.
@ShawnSwander Жыл бұрын
the rule is the takedown can't "project force" on the head or neck. They often call supplex as a slam and people take a fall like in soccer even though I've seen thousands of suplex in freestyle without injury. Basically it depends on if your opponent is a good actor.
@ZeusEBoy Жыл бұрын
@@ShawnSwander a suplex on the head to spine is a spike, youre not supposed to slam anyone that way,. suplexes are part of wrestling and not bjj. also wwe is acting, real freestyle and greco-roman wrestling exist and use it. they dont suplex in folkstyle, but even in greco or freestyle its only legal if they arent dropped on their head with weight going vertically onto their spine. again thats a spike and spikes are not legal anywhere. only if youre in a real fight.

@sleze Жыл бұрын
@@andrecheongavocadojudo2114 And I think that would make sense. If you are a smaller opponent, you should avoid getting into that situation. On my first lesson, this MUCH smaller girl got me into a triangle and, despite outweighing her by like 80 pounds, I frustratingly could not get out of it. I was, however, able to stand up and walk around with her before I got bored and tapped out. Although it taught me the effectiveness of the art, I feel like it taught her the wrong lesson. In a real world situation, if I (or she) did that to a much stronger person, it would end in a slam and we should be taught to get out of the position before it is too late.
