I don't train striking, just BJJ. The first time I got hit in real life, I just remember a big aggressive dude was coming down some steps to "beat our ass" and I was facing my rookie and telling him to get his Taser out... then I was facing something completely different, watching my glasses fly off into the distance. I doubt it was more than 3 seconds... but it felt like forever. In my head I was thinking "Huh... what is going on?" Then I looked over and a giant dude was grappling with the other guy. Unfortunately for the bad guy the taser was out and he got it to his neck; dropped like a sack of potatoes and started crying. Two lessons... taser is no BS, and if you have never been punched in the face you are going to be in a very bad way when you do. I believe that everyone should experience it, because had I been alone that sucker punch might have been much, much worse.

Big fan brother. Of the literally HUNDREDS of BJJ personalities and coaches on KZbin, you are one of only about half a dozen I actually closely follow and appreciate. I don’t normally comment because you do a great job, saying what needs to be said, on every topic. But. Had to chime in on this one. You nailed it. I’ve been training and teaching since 1984. Our gym does combat bjj with 8oz mma gloves 2 times a week. When you do those classes you find out real quick what bjj techniques are valid in a altercation and which one should just stick too bjj

@@DerineShorts I would honestly say anything that gets you from bottom position to top. When strikes are involved you don't wanna be on bottom. Once on top as long as you have good control and weight on them your golden

@@DerineShorts bottom escapes, anything that will get you to top position, sweeps, reversals etc also anything that'll get you back standing like wrestle ups. Even if you're a grappler, you dont wanna be on the ground in da streetz since other people can potentially come in, but if you're confident it's just gonna be 1v1, then yeah top control knee on belly mount etc

Started off doing bjj 4 times a week along with some freestyle wrestling classes now and then in 2018, fell in love with striking and foccused more on standing than bjj and did a muay thai smoker in 2021 which humbled tf out of me, now I am practicing mma. Older guy here about 5 months in. I took a knee to the face when rolling a month ago. Had teeth rearranged and got braces. It was an accident and the guy felt terrible. It has impacted my confidence but I’m getting it back.

For my blue belt test we had partners with gloves on punches us while we tried to submit them. Wasnt hard punches but it did illustrate what positions left you vulnerable.

Spot on analysis man. I have been taking jiu-jitsu for a total of 10 months cumulative, 8 months Gracie, 2 months Machado BJJ, and started Muay Thai 10 weeks ago. When I got punched in the face during my first Muay Thai sparring session, I involuntarily went blank for 2 seconds. It wasn't even a full force punch. Also, I tried to clench my instructor. He lit me up. Unless u r a very good/experienced Jiu-jitsu practitioner, good luck getting ahold of someone who is good at striking. Also, if u take a martial art that doesn't have REAL sparring, It is much harder to land a clean shot on someone who is moving and or resisting.

This is just sound advice for all martial arts. I'm a karate guy. My comfort is on my feet, moving around and hitting from odd angles, but I have spent considerable time studying bjj, judo, and wrestling. It has made my preferred fighting method stronger because I can read when tie-ups are favorable and unfavorable for me, as well as being able to escape should I get caught.

Going to go on a bit of a rant here. I’m a 45-year-old guy who has trained in various different martial arts for most of my life. I won’t go through the list, but it’s just about everything you can think of. I have also been in the military, and I have 17 years as a law-enforcement officer under my belt. None of that makes me an expert, but I’d like to think I have some clue what I’m talking about. I think that when people discuss this topic, it’s typical to become focused on the wrong questions. The reality of violence is that, for the vast majority of us living in western civilization, it is highly unlikely that we will ever have to get into a fistfight with another person. If we are going to discuss self-defense, we can talk until we are blue in the face about which combination of martial arts styles will provide you with the best “insurance policy” should you find yourself in a situation where you have no choice but to fight. The reality, however, is that self-defense starts with other things that have nothing to do with martial arts. 1. Avoiding situations where you are likely to encounter potentially violent people. Most of these situations will have a common denominator, and that tends to be guys who are drunk. 2. General situational awareness. Keep your head on a swivel, and pay attention to people’s tone of voice, body language, and the specific words they are using. If you find yourself in a situation where things look like they are going bad, remove yourself from that situation. 3. Verbal judo, AKA de-escalation. Knowing how to talk to people in a way that takes them from a state of agitation to a relaxed state is incredibly useful. There are lots of videos online that can teach you the basics of this valuable skill set. 4. Cardio. Like chewy said, run away. Forget about your ego or your reputation. Even if you think you can win the fight, is it worth potentially going to jail or facing a lawsuit? Fighting is stupid, and the only reason you should ever do it is because you are put in a situation where you have to defend yourself or someone else and you have no other alternative. Final thoughts: Although it is incredibly unlikely that you will ever get in a fight if you follow the above advice, anything can happen. In the event that you are attacked, if I had to pick one martial art, Brazilian jiujitsu wins. This is assuming that your school teaches you how to defend yourself against strikes. Most don’t anymore, so good luck with that. The reason that I pick jiujitsu is that you will probably only ever face a single opponent. If you get jumped by four or five people, I don’t care how much kickboxing you know. You are in real trouble. BJJ will provide you with a method for self-defense, and you don’t have to harm the other person to protect yourself. If you want to go out and learn kickboxing or some other form of striking, more power to you. But the truth is that if you get attacked, it’s not a cage fight. Your job is (assuming that you couldn’t run away) to neutralize the other person‘s ability to do damage to you. To control them. The less harm you can do to them in the process, the better it’s going to be for you legally. Proper self-defense training in Brazilian jujitsu teaches you how to avoid being struck from the outside, close the distance, take the person to the ground, and control them so that they have no leverage from which to do damage to you. Any striking art where you stand there and try to exchange blows introduces the very real possibility that you get knocked out. Not worth taking the chance.

Very well said. I agree with essentially every point. This is a bit of an echo of what you said at the end but BJJ does provide a nice way to neutralize a threat (if there was no way to escape or deescalate) while potentially keeping the legal trouble to a minimum. I always laugh hearing people argue over this topic, blue in the face as you said. Fighting should be the last resort in most circumstances, and it is better that you at least know something because it's a crazy world. Thanks for sharing, and thank you for you service. Well said.

I have been doing BJJ for a while and did kickboxing for a few months to get experience and more understanding for striking. It isn't easy but it has definitely helped my timings for takedowns and allowed me to be less stiff with my movements.

this is most important for women, when a guy attacks a woman, 99.99% of the time the first thing they do is punch her in the face, yet, I have never seen a "self defense course for women" that involves how to take a punch, I'm sure there are somewhere, but I never saw it, and unfortunately, there is only one way to practice that, I'm not saying that women should punch it out with a guy, but as Chewy say, learn how to take a punch and react or defend accordingly is important, esp in a self defense setting

I say as a boxer that has a grappling/wrestling mix. If you BJJ guys think you can grab a boxer that has fast footwork and hands its gonna be a hurtful experience. I tell BJJ guys learn to box and weave/setups

Once a week our jj gym has vale tudo class after one of our fundamental bjj classes, and he incorporates it with self-defense! Sometimes we use the electric practice knives 😂we get to put the gloves on and do striking, standing and on the ground! The hub and I go, it's fun and tough, but we love it! 💪😎i highly suggest anyone doing jj to also try and incorporate some striking, it changes the game a bit and it's fun! 🎉 Thanks Chew! 💪💓

So my gym offers BJJ, wrestling and fitness kick boxing. I haven’t done any kick boxing yet but I’m loving the BJJ and wresting. I’m guessing the fitness kick boxing can probably teach me some good basic striking, but I’m also guessing I might need to learn what it’s like to be punched in the face

Is BJJ enough? It absolutely can be in many situations. We’ve all seen professional MMA fighters who are one dimensional completely impose their game on other pro fighters. If you are a purple belt or higher and you are in a one-on-one fight with another person, and they are untrained, you absolutely should be able to impose your one dimensional game plan on that person and dominate them. That said, being well rounded is always a better option. But this idea of “BJJ doesn’t work for self defense” is total bullshit.
