Why should the used-up oxygen create a vacuum? Isn't each mol of oxygen replaced by one mole of CO2? I think what creates the vacuum is rather the double temperature change: When the air is heated, it expands and some of it leaves the glass. When the remaining air cools down, it contracts and sucks the water in.

Actually it's worse than that. Some of the O2 reacts with hydrogen to become H2O gas, which yields two moles for every mole of oxygen, thus the quantity of gas increases! The rising internal pressure will slightly lift the glass so that the gases can escape and bubble up through the water. As the gases cool, they should contract somewhat, also at least some of the water vapor will condense further reducing gas volume inside the glass and possibly sucking in some water. I'm discounting the demonstration because the people who made this video clearly failed chemistry forever.

This reminds me of the egg experiment where the egg fits perfectly in the hole of the bottle and there is a lit match inside the bottle, eventually the fire consumes all the oxygen, creating a vacuum which absorbs everything around it to fill in the hole without gas particles. Eventually it pulls the egg inside, letting air back in. Basically, fire can create black holes.

The explanation is wrong, the oxygen used up is replaced by carbon dioxide. What really happens is the air in the glass gains heat from the flame, expands and escapes from the bottom of the glass. As the flame goes out, the air cools down, contracts and the difference in air pressure causes the water to be drawn into the glass.

By the way, it's not the using up oxigen that creates the vacuum. Vacuum is already there when the glass connects entirely with the water. It's the cooling air that decreases in volumina to maintain the pressure that creates the suction.

OutragedPanda From a physical standpoint, yes. In English you have to differentiate between vacuum and true vacuum. A vacuum is a confined space in a grand canonical system that has a lower particle density and pressure. A true vacuum is a space devoid of particles (except maybe for quantum fluctuations). At no point did I say true vacuum in my previous statement. Or do you think a vacuum cleaner works with true vacuum?

This is a false riddle. The water is still on the plate it has just been compressed into the confines of the walls of the glass. it isn't actually in the glass. For it to be in the glass the water and glass must move independently of each other. I have always had this issue with this "riddle" "trick"

If you move the glass the water falls back to the plate as the pressure equalizes. As such it is on the plate still because if you move the plate the water moves. It is like saying you are in a boat because you are on water ski's behind it.
