I find myself in agreement with you Marie. In my part of the world, we have mandatory supervision for our work. So when clients bring issues that resonate deeply or even hit too close to home, I spend time exploring whether my personal experience will help or hinder both the client and myself. It might be that it's better to refer them on. An observation: I notice how I feel a sense of tension when I hear you discussing specialisation and imagining what that would be like for me. Here, narrowing down is not the norm. And I feel I would burn out or perhaps become a little bored if I specialised in one type of issue. It's resourcing to me to have some degree of variety and helps me maintain a balanced, sustainable practice. Having said that, there are some areas I just don't work with because of my history or lack of training/experience with those issues.
