THANK YOU Dr. Mark for making this video on retiring to Thailand on a REALISTIC budget! There are way too many videos from Thailand KZbinrs talking about ridiculously low budgets where you can 'get by'. Like Joe, I am thinking about retiring to Thailand, but I have no intention on barely scraping by on $900 US a month. What Mark highlights is a VERY reasonable budget where a person (single male) can live a good life in one's golden years!! With some female companionship as well!!

I'm leaning toward a Jomtien (or Hua Hin) retirement, am over 50, U.S., don't drink. My Soc. Sec. if there's a 3% COLA in 2024, will only be about $930. The apts I like in Jomtien cost $400 or less. I will try to secure VA foreign health care. I earn a little extra a year writing/editing (avg. $4 or 5K USD annual- some yrs much more). But I could rent f/ $295

I would ask you if you could possibly watch my upcoming video called why do I live in Thailand like a hobo..... I think you'll see and understand why I have been doing this social media experiment.. My kid on my dime spent $12,000 for 6+ month stay there. She doesn't drink, didn't rent a bike( used boat, train, vans planes), she also made friends/ expats other tourists etc. and hitched rides from them. Hotels cost her approx.$22..visited the elephants, monkeys, Cambodia, Vietnam etc. Had a ball. And coming home I got money back $2500 baht. Lol. This is not including airfare which she mostly paid for in CC points. Great show thanks

I did it 8 years ago for less than that. I spent about 23K CAD between Thailand and Cambodia. I did some volunteer teaching for a few months in Cambodia and traveled both countries pretty extensively. It was easy back then and I am sure it is still doable. Last July/August I spent an average of 500 baht a night on hotels, so still reasonable prices now

Aye Doc... Great Vid for me... I have been visiting SE Asia 2 - 3 times a Year for over a decade. I plan on finally moving to Thailand full time next year 2024. Trying to sell my considerable stash of stuff. I still have to determine what to do with my home in Las Vegas. I do not want to sell and the additional income would be cool from a rental. This vid was informative though I already know where I will live - Jomtien Beach. Close enough to Pattaya but just far enough away to have a Nice beach and some peace and quiet. Used to love phuket but it has become way to congested and overly expensive on every level. Jomtien has it all right now. Keep up the good info.

I have been living in Thailand since October 2022. I have a contract for 1 year rental for 9500 thb ($270 USD). I pay between 1500-2500 thb ($40-$70 USD) electric bill. Water about 260thb ($7 USD). I eat out all the time and I spend roughly 700thb twice a day ($20USD) about $40USD per day. Using the BTS 124thb round trip ($3.50). I have a car and I like to drive almost every day. That can be expensive (3000thb $84 USD per week). Sometimes, I stay the night or two when I go to a car meet or show. That would be more money to spend. I usually spend between $30-60 USD depending on how the room looks but I try not to spend more than $100USD. Anyways, all I’m trying to say is the spending is based on your lifestyle here in Thailand. So far I have spent about $45K since I “moved” to Thailand. You have to include the cost of visas and extensions. I always fly outside of Thailand and go to different countries and comeback after two or three weeks. I got stopped once entering thailand as they got suspicious of me living in Thailand without a proper visa 😅. I showed them that I applied for a tourist visa but it was being processed. They let me in and now I got approved with the visa. I’m on Indonesia at the moment and I’m using the approved visa (tourist visa) on my way back to Thailand. It can be expensive but Mark is right, you can live on a much lower income. Lifestyle guys, add more if you get girls

Hi Mark - great information Sir - re the health care $900 a year seems amazingly reasonable. I'm planning to retire and live in BKK in 2024 where I've owned a condo for many years with no debt. Perfectly fine to get around by MRT, BTS, bus, occasionally a motor bike taxi using Gojak. Street food will be my usual meal. Won't be going to entertainment spots in BKK but will frequent Pattaya perhaps once a month - don't drink booze but will drop by a few go-go or massage establishments I know.

Buying health insurance is easy. Getting the insurance companies to pay claims is a little more complicated. Read and understand the fine print. Ask lots of questions. Find out if you are really covered. These insurance companies are infamous for not paying. Preexisting conditions is something they can get very creative with. If you have preexisting conditions, self insurance is something to consider.

Hi Doc, hope you are well. Just a comment re Thai visas. If you google on the internet you will see much conflicting advice and rules . It is hard to know what is current and what is old. One thing I would mention though is if you fly into Thailand and get a 30 day visa on arrival you really need to show that you are leaving the country at the end of that 30 days. I flew from Australia to Bangkok a few months ago and my airline Eva Air would not let me check in unless I could show onward travel or a return ticket. I bought a one way $90 throw away ticket Bangkok to KL as I knew I would be getting an extension and staying 60 days.. It kept them happy.

Good content, Sir 🍻 Now I know I can easily pull off 6 months there one NOV-APR without having to do only 30 days there & the rest in the Philippines. Wondering of a timeline you might suggest for 6 months…would you book a Bangkok condo for a home base & maybe once/mo hit a new city for a week, or maybe visit 6 different places for a month each? 12 places for two weeks each?

yeah mate it's fantastic and it's completely doable and yes when you come to Thailand you get 30 days and then they allow you to extend it an extra 30 days..... if I was coming to Thailand for essentially the first time to check it out what I would do is I would live in the six major places for one month each. I would probably start in Bangkok because most likely that's where you're going to fly into I would then go to Chiang Mai after Chiang Mai I would head down to Hua Hin followed up by Koh Samui and then Phuket and Krabi...... Another video idea is: Can you live on credit cards in Thailand? I personally have over $500k USD in available credit card limits. My 401k is much larger, but I don't want to touch it for various reasons. My passive income is very high also, but I prefer to put that into income producing investments. Do the condos and restaurants allow you to pay with a "credit" card??? This allows a "float" for people who have delayed income like dividends, etc. They then payoff the credit cards when they receive their income. Rinse and repeat...
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Жыл бұрын
Hey Todd that's actually a very interesting question and in my opinion the only way that that would work is if you are paying your credit cards off every single month before incurring any type of interest otherwise it would make absolutely zero sense.... You can live on credit cards here but I don't recommend it because you're paying a 3% premium for every single thing you buy... . Unless you're paying for the hotels on a website and stuff like that you're going to pay a 3% premium so I would not recommend it myself personally I think it's a horrific waste of money and it financially is kind of irresponsible.... well to be honest with you like I said in the video most of the guys that are coming to do research about retiring here they want to come and retire they're not coming to party for a couple of weeks or a couple of months they're actually looking to come and retire.... for the most part they're not going to be going to the bars all of the time that's why I built in two nights a week going to the bars and then one night a week paying for companionship..... Keep in mind this video was geared towards the older guys getting ready to retire Cheers mate 🍺

Mark, how are prices being affected by the sharp increase in Russian tourists and retirees? My ultimate goal is to buy a nice condo or villa in Phuket, but im concerned prices might get out of hand, is this a reality or media hype?

Justin I'll be honest with you in the very beginning when we had the crazy influx of Russians yes the prices went a little bit insane for about three or four months... But everything drifted back to where it should be I know this much man you can go on Facebook marketplace and look at all the condos that are here available discounted prices it's insane really if you have the opportunity to buy now is the time... And I fully understand that is an extremely loaded statement

25K US is way too much for budget travel around your region. I was getting by on 12K US per year just prior to the Covid hysteria. This was moving from Thai to Cambodia or Lao back then when my visa expired. Of course, I wasn't womanizing, which certainly does add a lot to one's budget, especially if you have a rapacious long-term girlfriend or several overnighters per week. Being prepared to live down market and to eat local food is what made this easy for me. Besides, booze is still very cheap in parts of Thai, away from resort hotspots at least, and is dirt cheap in neighbouring Indochina. This means that you don't have to deprive yourself of too much on such a tight budget.
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean
@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean Жыл бұрын
So essentially you were living on the exact same budget that I'm preaching to people that it is possible to live here on..... however this video was done specifically for someone who wanted to come and travel around the entire country staying indifferent areas and then decide which one they wanted to live in..... I also think that it is an extremely realistic amount for someone coming and doing that because I added in every single thing from the girls to the booze to the bars,,,,, bite like I said once you get here and you settle into one area you're spending is definitely going to drop unless like you say you're a sucker for the bar girls you're a sucker for going out every night,,,,, Or if you're dating a blood sucker.... Your not going to get long term rental to get non tourists priced rooms...if you don't have 6 or 12 month rental contract....sorry a week here a week there. 3 nights here one night there..my experience your paying on average 500 to 650 baht a night if your lucky you will find one with balcony or window...livable rooms usually on 3rd floor....2 or 3 star ok....3 to 4 star with balcony n ocean views starting 1.000 baht night..sorry to burst the bubble here

Hey Chris my friend I have to disagree with you on that to some degree,,, because I have found all kinds and all you got to do is jump on Facebook marketplace and you can find hundreds of spots that you can rent month to month for the same price as a yearly contract Mate I've been personally doing it You really just have to shop around. I'll admit a lot of people don't want to even bother with you when you tell them month-to-month or you just want it for a couple of months but I guarantee you the majority will because they're looking for money too.... however you are completely right if you're just spending a night here and night there jumping from place to place week by week it is going to be exactly what you're saying Cheers mate 🍺.

Well as far as market place goes I too agree lots n lots of accommodation but not in a specific area you are looking for or town your looking for like in the area close to markets centre of town close to 7 or C or lotus big fat No mate .and as for thai's desperate for money they are likely to charge you more ok sometimes they will give you 50 baht discount if you turn up pay cash not book through Agoda...I know you want your Chanel to look good...whole lot of things to look at wen I take a room n I refuse to take a room if air-conditioning not work. bed that hard carnt sleep room hasntnt been cleaned for 6 months.and honestly if they think them rooms are worth 500 or more they are kidding not worth 300..we could go back n forth on this get no we're....iv gone to same hotel many times and he tries n does charge same price in high or low season...oh one more thing if room is only 21 sq mtrs your fucken kidding I not pay 200 baht for it...you know I'm Wright.how many people have listened to utibers advice n stories I don't find wat you say

First off I don't say anything in my videos to make my KZbin channel look good I tell the truth all the time!!!! every single thing I talk about every single claim that I make every Dollar value I give can be completely 1000% verified!!!!! I'm sorry you're having such a s*** time finding places but I'm obviously not you can go back and look at all of the places that I've shown throughout my videos..... you're right there's no sense of us going back and forth about this because everything that I show is completely true whether you believe that or not I really don't know what to say brother. .. not sure why you're getting charged the way you're getting charged at these hotels..... I've never once stayed in a place at the air conditioning didn't work or that the bed wasn't nice.... Maybe if I'm in some remote rural area and that's the only available option yes but not in any place that I rented.... Sorry mate but we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this.... but one thing is for certain I do not make any claims in any of my videos just to make my channel look good so let's make sure that we're crystal clear on that okay. Thanks for the banter and debate Cheers mate 🍺
