It's almost impossible to detect lies when you don't know the person's baseline (their default behaviour when they are telling the truth). The scenario is also framed so that there are only rewards and no consequences to lying. It also doesn't help that you're only asking a single question and the conversation ends immediately after that question. The problem is our goal is trying to detect lies instead of trying to discover the truth. Asking "Did you cheat?" can be very accusatory and it usually conveys that you don't really care about them. In the case of children, it usually means they won't feel bad about lying to you. We should be asking "What did you do after I left the room?". We would then ask them to elaborate on the details, the reasoning behind it, and how they felt during that time. If they get defensive or angry after a few questions, then that's usually a good indicator that they're trying to hiding something.

This was how I broke it down before assuming 1, 3, and 4 all lied. 1 looked real sketchy right after he gave his answer lol but I guess thats just him; 2 had a confident expression and tone while responding quickly, so I knew she wasn't lying; 3 swiftly considered if she was going to lie or not before giving her answer nervously, so it was an obvious lie; and 4 gave his answer while looking nervously to see if the listener bought what he said, so I was fairly sure he lied. I watched a ted talk by Lee (the lying researcher) that says that neutral expressions are usually mantained when lying. Kids aren`t stupid. They know that if he hide or try to hide their emotions, people will think they are telling the truth because they dont look nervous. It`s actually the other way around. Liars will usually have a suppresed nervousness. That`s why kids 1 and 2 were telling the truth. Neither had a suppresed nervousness. The girl was staright-forward and specific, and the boy was acting kind of sketchy and smiling (signs that hes not lying). I personally have noticed that liars often headshake. Another thing about lying is that liars will often not abreviate their words. For instance, instead of saying "i didn`t do it" they will say "I did not do it".

You cannot define a lie. The definition belongs to the person you were talking to. If they believed you, and later you try to tell them you were just joking, you might get a skeptical look ("Yeah, sure, sarcasm. Nah, you just got caught and now you want to wiggle out of it.") And they might never trust you again. It's a lie if you allow anyone to believe an untruth.

Human beings are very bad at telling if a given person is lying. Human beings are pretty good at judging character and seeing patterns of behavior. If you have to question whether or not someone is lying, you shouldn't look at their behavior as they tell you the story. You should ask yourself, "Is this the kind of person who would lie about this kind of thing"? If you know them, you'll be right more often than not.

Question: I'm wondering if this technique is taking into account the reactive differences between say, someone on the autistic spectrum vs someone who might just be anxious naturally? Also, are they also taking into account factors such as the mood of the individual before they walked into the experiment and the environment of the room where the experiments are taking place? In this video, it appears to all be taking place in an office-like setting, but put people into real-world scenarios, such as a retail environment, are the same factors at play?
@ryelysquires63926 жыл бұрын
anndillm I’m both and I can tell that you are probably right, when an anxious tells the truth it is much, much harder to grasp wether or not they’re lying as they are anxious. With the autistic people it’s pretty similar. So again, to answer the question. I honestly don’t think this does take those groups into account.

So many questions: Did they take into account the developmental age of the children and their ability to understand to differentiate between a truth and a lie? According to the world of Psychology, most kids aren't able to understand the consequences of telling a lie until they're around 12-years-old. Also, if they child thinks they are likely to get into trouble when asked the (lie) question, by their parent vs a neutral party, it's been researched they answer differently. I did years of training and work experience in learning how to understand when kids lie, so I find this information fantastically interesting!
