I don't agree on the blanket statement of not using 1px "emboss" shadows: it is something depending on the look of the page; there is a bit of interest for a modernised skeumorphism... so an effect like that, that doesn't affect readability is fine in my book. Also stark shadows like the one in your thumbnail are really cool. If used on big titles and banner-like content, I don't see the problem. In fact, the stark shadows like that make me think of Nike (or sport brands in general), I think they used them for "shouty" content they had

Hi ! I have been creating WordPress sites for years. I started to (re) learn some new CSS3 practices and some basics in JS. My goal is to learn how to create very graphic sites, with nice animations such as page transition effects, text effects, hamburger frame and animated buttons etc. I saw that Gsap Libs allows to make a good number of them, am I good staring to learn this one ?

It would be easier if Adobe would add an option to change the blending settings of shadows (or even the outlines). I noticed that Multiply blending settings worked best for shadows applied to colored backgrounds. Edit: or even the Overlay option in some occasions.

I've been told that you MUSTN'T use dropshadows... Ever. Apparently that's what they're teaching in the local college html programme. I feel that there are no 'rules' only guidelines and trends. Having said that, I used to overuse dropshadows. And now, I pretty much only use them (sparingly) as a hover-over (feedback) or to define contrast between some header text and a background image... Especially if I don't have control over what the background image might be (I build cms's that allow the user to control certain elements). Drop shadows as a design element... Meh. Not really. But I'm always on the lookout for more creative use of dropshadows.

I love your voice, I love your style, I love your sense of humor, your speaking-to-a-camera skills and your really good explanations. I love how you make a point and express your opinion.
