Bravo for this piece. Its so important at this time. Well done. We need to learn this and we need to teach it to our children. Closing the divide depends on it. Its predictable and a bit sad to see people attacking basic common sense here. People are getting manipulated and when you bring that into the light the egos go a bit mental. Thanks for your tuition.

I follow both the traditional and online channels for the news. It can be confusing because of conflicting reports. However, it is better to be confused a bit than to blindly believe either channel. Sometimes, it may be highly recommended to follow online reporting, like in the case of the Ukraine war, or the Israel-Arab war. The standard channels often offer highly tendentious or incomplete news. 'Local' news agencies can correct. In Thailand, of course we can watch KZbin, but it is also worthwhile to watch Al Jazeera (Arab news), CGTN (China) and RT (Russia) (with minimal effort it is possible to switch off when they are broadcasting propaganda).

fascinating subject! beside checking sources, scrutinizing them using your best critical thinking it is best to do this to both sides. I am centre-left but I check the right-wing press regularly and try to see their point of view, I check the extreme left to see where they are coming from in their thinking. I don't think there is an unbiased media today but some are more objective than others. RT is like the left's equivalent of Fox, but there is not always a clear right vs left anymore. There are the odd points of agreement I have with the sage Donal J Trump!

one last item: “RoseBud” Citizen Kane and the selection of the direction his paper was going to take when they posted two articles. the amount of respondents to either article was the direction he was going to take: empathy vs sensationalism …. Also “ The Fountainhead” about news paper owner being manipulated by a writer supporting bad architecture vs originality of thought. it shows that viewers/readers can be easily swayed towards a direction of writers or newspaper choosing….

Any news story that provides anything beyond the FACTS of Who, What, Where, When and How has entered the realm of opinion and should be treated with caution. And nothing has changed with the mega rich owners of media organizations influencing the news and public opinion. There has to be some arbitrator, some guidelines, some rules to moderate what people can and can’t say. Otherwise there is no civilisation.

On the contrary. C has some of the most rife censorship from an owner with active political leanings. The censorship has become a critical problem for the platform which has now burned advertisers and lost 90% of its commercial value. But, of course, it is the new owner’s right to operate the platform anyway he wants. So called ‘freedom of speech’ should allow views from all sides of the political spectrum. It also requires sometime or something to remove content deemed hateful, inaccurate or misleading. THAT is the critical issue… for any social media platform.
