I’ve got this tv and using it as a VFX display. It is so incredibly high performance compared to very expensive LED /LCD monitors. The colours, black levels and instant latency is no comparison to them. It’s so vastly superior it’s not funny. I’m so looking forward to Eizo, Hp and Asus to all have Oled displays for grading in the coming years. This display is only $1100 AUD at the moment which is 1/3 the cost of a grading lcd with a much much better performance and quality. I have an Eizo and Asus pro art LCD displays.

I've spend a LOT of time over the past year, to research how to use the Calman Home for Sony. Things are by far clear on their website. For one, they mentions that you can use an Android app, ad pattern generator, but not how - it's via an usb to HDMI adaptor cable, and apparently that's not even close to being accurate. Well, that was my rant. Here comes the interesting part. I can't check this, because 1) It's not described how. 2) I haven't actually bought the software yet. On their web page under the Sony version, it says: "Calman Home for Sony Workflows HDR Manual Calibration Workflow. SDR Manual Calibration Workflow. Meter Profiling Workflow. Monitor Calibration Workflow. Sony Calibration Workflow - supports SDR and HDR (HDR calibration derived from SDR). " The interesting part being" Monitor Calibration Workflow". As I understand it, there's a 3 unit licence, along with the AutoCal software, meaning you can calibrate 3 TVs, then aquire additional licence, if needed. But nowhere, except for this very page, does it say anything about monitor calibration, and there are actually other places, where it says you need the pro solutions, for monitor calibration. Now, I DO have a free calibration solution for my displays, but if I c could use the Calman Home, I sure would. All it takes, us apparently a Client3 PC Single or multiple License, but again, it's frustratingly vague. It says you need a "Client3 Profile Manager (add-on option), but when you do a Google search on" Client3 Profile Manager", you only get links to CalMAN Client3 software.

Thank you so much for this information. This video cleared up all my questions about calibration. I've been using DisplayCal with my x-rite, any thoughts about that in terms of accuracy or best practices? Though, I do think in the future I'll have someone professionally calibrate with Calman. It would be nice to have a cheaper version for consumers for non-TV screens so I can use the Raspberry PI method. I'm on an Eizo which has been fantastic. I do think you're right though, you don't need a BVM or something similar, but it's crazy that there are displays that cost more than my car. I maybe wrong, because I'm new to this, but it seems like displays haven't "democratized" as fast as other gear in the industry (cams, lighting, etc).
@DeHavenCamera
@DeHavenCamera Жыл бұрын
Hi Twayne, glad it was helpful. So a few things, while DisplayCal is a fantastic tool its sadly no longer being developed and has some major short comings with many configurations, and with LG in specific. Calman has created apps for most major consumer displays like Sony and LG for a very affordable rate. That being said many would agree the jump to $2k for a full verison is steep. As for the BVM, full disclosure.. I have the BVM in our suites and we use them. They are the gold standard and many clients, like Netflix, require them. Ultimately there is a difference, full stop, Sony gets the top pick for the best and most uniform panels that come from the manufacturer, the X310 is an instrument, not a monitor, its a reference display and you are paying for that QC process, accuracy, consistancy and uniformity. But for most media being created it can be done on an LG C2, or a variety of other non critical displays for less cost. All solutions have a plus and minus and its what compromise you are willing to live with. The Sony BVM you are paying for basically no compromise (though there are some there as well)

For my mac, there’s a display setting for hdr when hdr display is detected. For SDR I leave it off, but for HDR should I be turning that display setting on to force the lg in hdr mode for HDR grading? Then in regards to my LG oled settings in HDR, there’s tone mapping. Should I be turning that off for grading?

You should not use the GPU output for your display, if you are serious about color accuracy. That's why you need one of those boxes (DeckLink), mentioned in the start of the video. About the screen... Who knows. I tend to believe that color grading displays are more accurate, are more stable (doesn't need to be calibrated as often, as consumer displays), and has a better (larger) support for pro color spaces, like DCI-P3, Adobe RGB, Rec2020 etc.

I believe the standard for tv, has always been 16-235 colors, while for monitors it's 0-255. But the Rec.709 standard also says 16-235. From Wikipedia: Rec. 709 defines an R’G’B’ encoding and a Y’CBCR encoding, each with either 8 bits or 10 bits per sample in each color channel. In the 8-bit encoding the R’, B’, G’, and Y’ channels have a nominal range of [16..235], and the CB and CR channels have a nominal range of [16..240] with 128 as the neutral value. So in limited range R’G’B’ reference black is (16, 16, 16) and reference white is (235, 235, 235), and in Y’CBCR reference black is (16, 128, 128) and reference white is (235, 128, 128).

There are other options. The inexpensive one, is the SpectraCal MobileForge Pattern Generator, which is an app for your smartphone. It's free, and you then connect your phone to your TV, with an USB to HDMI cable. Some say you can also connect the PC with the Calman Home software, to the display, and open a pattern window, that you then drag onto the TV. But both these methods are said to be inaccurate.
@DeHavenCamera
@DeHavenCamera Жыл бұрын
Mobile Forge is a great option and great suggestion, just be aware that both AppleTV and FireTV are sending limited range signals.. As for connecting as a PC this is not suggested as the PC itself is doing colormanagement which will skew the results.

Can we use Samsung m7 43 inch 4k monitor for professional movie Color grading wotks
@constantinosschinas4503
@constantinosschinas4503 Жыл бұрын
The simple answer is yes. It takes years of expertise and tons of reading and testing to know what a color workflow is and how to properly use it, (in grading or calibration) anyway. With monitors that do not support hardware (internal) calibration profiles, prefer less aggressive calibrations, to avoid banding. People hunt good monitors and calibrations, without even knowing the basics of what a color workflow is, how we shoot and use LUTS and so on. In my professional experience, 99% of "graders" do not know what grading is or what calibration is. Which at the end means... it doesn't really matter.

If you export for online, how do you avoid the gamma shift? thx
@DeHavenCamera
@DeHavenCamera Жыл бұрын
This is a bit of a deeper topic, and not really relivant to the calibration of your monitor. However if you want more info you should look up colorspace tagging, quicktime ATOM, and what formats support these funcitons. The basic answer is that you need to make sure that your entire pipeline, monitor, applicaiton, output format etc all are setup in the same format. Example is your monitor is calibrated to rec709 gamma 2.2 in video range (limited) then your applicaiton needs to be set to this as well, and when you render you need to be sure that both your applicaiton and your output format support colorspace tagging. Resolve does this and as long as you setup your project correctly these settings will be included in the metadata and thus will playback without any gamma shift. In most cases this is not a gamma shift issue but a Full vs video range issue..

@@johnwaldmann5222 So to be clear I am not a representitive of Calman. So when having issues its always best to contact the software manufacturer. However I can point out a few things. If you look in the release notes for ALL versions of calman (studio, pro and home) back to early 2022 it clearly states under known issues "2022 LG (all models) - internal patterns are not currently supported" so if you are using a C2 OLED it will fail. I went through this issue and it would hang the software or cause very unstable use when I tried to use the internal generator on the LG. On LG C1 series no problems. If you have the full studio version then you can use Resolve to generate patches (not supported in HOME) or you can use the video forge software for $500. No tv is properly calibrated. What they do, is calibrating one unit, then transfer the same profile, to all models. In other words - no they do not spend 45 minutes to calibrate each TV in the factory. Besides, calibration is AT LEAST a yearly task, and for professionals way more often, than that. All TVs goes out of whack with time. No matter the price.

You made a catastrophic mistake: For LG panels, you need to select OLED WRGB, not RGB. Also, unless you are using a high quality certified colorimeter (like the C6) you really need a spectrophotometer to profile your colorimeter, otherwise the calibration is pointless.

Hi Xavier, thanks for your feedback. Lets put things in perspective. We are talking about a sub $1000 consumer monitor for use with a bascially free grading tool, so it might be a bit overkill to use a $800 C6 to calibrate. As well keeping in mind we are using a homebrew RaspberryPi for our pattern source and not a $1500 videoforge pro so there is inherent minor innacuracy there as well. What we are trying to do is give an average home user the ability to have a monitor that visually shows accurate color. Not all grading enviroments are scientifically correct, a great many do not even calibrate so this is a step better and an intro into this world and workflow. In testing we have checked this process against the results of using full license Calman with a Colorimetry Research CR-250-RH Spectrometer and have checked it against our calibration results on our Sony BVM-X310 and the results are well within an acceptable tollerance. Basically they visually match. In regards to the WRGB and RGB setting I have not seen major differences in calibration results with either setting, and RGB is the calman default. However I agree that this setting could produce more accurate results all things being equal and I encorage others to test and try on their own. Ultimately color is a creative process, and perceptual. Since we do not grade in a lab, and most watching this are not learning to calibrate a $200m studio we feel this can get many users a great start at working in a more accurate enviroment. Thanks again for your feedback and input!

@@DeHavenCamera He's right on both counts. But for sure according to the guru's at AVSforum you want to pick RAW XYZ. And it's just facts that unless you have a Spectrophotometer it isn't really accurate. I don't have one either just same colorimeter as you but I just want to point it out to let people be informed.

@@hdtv00 ok so maybe you missed it in the reply above. I own a $9000 Colorimetry Research CR-250-RH Spectrometer as well as the Sony X310 $45k refererence monitor and I have verified my results with and against them both. While minor inacuracies do exist (the panel being the biggest culprit), we are talking about a $1000 monitor and a few hundred in parts and software for a colorist working independently to be able to have a relatively accurate grading monitor. As noted changing the settings from RGB to WRGB does make a small difference so that can be bettered from my walkthrough. I can verify however that even with the CR-250 and a video forge pro the LG will not get any more accurate with those devices in use. Its a consumer TV. Furthermore, why would anyone not working in a large scale pro enviroment (where a video engineer is present anyway) cailbrate a $1000 consumer TV with a $14,000 setup of meter and software? If you are going to spend that money you are going to by a Sony X310.. At any rate, we are not talking a labratory we are talking perceptual creative color grading for users working on a budget.. So while the comments are appreciated with all due respect its off topic and better saved for the never ending debates in the AVS forum or LGG forum. And I love the debate so DM me and we can disucss further and I can share results!

@@wdigivideo would it be possible to get usable results with display cal in resolve on this lg or other consumer tv ? if not as good as what your proposing as an extreme budget setup would it be better then nothing ?

@@XxmattitudexX as displaycal is no longer technically supported application that I know of (I think the developer stopped updating it a while back if I’m correct) and as it does not directly update the internal LUT on the LG (again that I’m aware of) I’d say it’s not ideal at all. As with anything I’m sure there is a hack or work around but most likely you would give up accuracy. By using displaycal you’d only be saving on the $150 license for calman and the raspberry which you can get very cheap on eBay if you look hard enough. So I’d say stick with calman

A TV set can’t be a reference monitor. At best it can only be a client’s monitor. Saying it can be use as a reference monitor after calibration is very misleading. Reference monitor is the highest quality of a broadcast monitor, even Sony never sell PVM series as a reference monitor and PVM series is much better quality than a TV set.
