Theoretically you could fake it but you could also get fired. Just use a vpn and a real address either your parents home or a ups address you can rent out. They could fire you for tax reasons but theoretically they shouldn’t be able to tell either. The biggest problem is if you lose your job overseas and don’t have an emergency savings you could be in deep water trying to get a new job or trying to get back home.

I've tried this several times, same outcome. Apparently there is a database that companies have access to that lists every IP address used by VPN's. When they see one, it's adios to you.

PO Boxes do not count as valid legal addresses for tax, banking and insurance purposes. You must use a friend or family members address.
@teckniec27 ай бұрын
You would want to use a friend or family members address AND they would need to be willing to let you run a VPN off of their connection so your employer sees their ip address and not an automated one. OR, you could experiment with a VPN for 6-12 months prior to leaving to see if it they ask you about it, this would be more risky if things change though. I am still in the states and have run off of a VPN for years but their tech and ops does the most sometimes so that could change at any time. They woke up one day and blocked everyone access to external drives (I need for my job) and had to get a VP to get them to give my access back. If this happened with a VPN when I am half way around the world, that sounds like a bad time.
@DearSXАй бұрын
@teckniec2 exactly or just setup a network locally or in the cloud from a US company like Amazon. You can get a static IP from Verizon for $20/month and setup a firewall locally to that IP.

It's frustrating if companies are offering 1099 or contract positions there's no good reason for them to insist on folks living in the US only. I'm a US citizen living in Central America. I have great equipment high-speed fiber optic internet, and the only difference between me and some guy living in Houston is that I sleep a little further south than him. I've been sifting through thousands of postings over the last few weeks, and the only companies that accept people from other than the US (for non-super high-tech positions) are crap companies that pay $1.50 an hour for mind-numbing chores that a squirrel could do.

Same here I’m in Russia. Got hired through an outsourcing company in Belarus. The payment is so so low, but since I’m a student now, it’s actually great. But in the long run when I go back to my country and have real responsibilities I’ll need to find a better job or ask for a rise ( which won’t happen… they can just go to Eastern Europe and find someone else 😂)

Does anyone stealthily work abroad? I did in my last job as I had local admin rights and it was awesome. Changed jobs and that's no longer the case...so I'm thinking I need a VPN router and will leave my work phone in nyc...friend will have access just in case. Will also need to have my PC checked for tracking/anti theft hardware. Anyone else getting away with this? With the cost of living in nyc through the roof a 100k salary has very little buying power...even a 200k salary wouldn't get you approved for a mortgage in this area.

You mentioned that you have figured it out as a corporation. My company is now concerned that my working remote has some tax liability but they cannot figure out what that liability is exactly. So they are getting ready to let me go to eliminate any unknown liability. Is there a tax liability for corporations with employees working remotely in Costa Rica.
@alexdegaston422 Жыл бұрын
They have the "Vermont Only" mentality because they don't take simple steps to protect themselves on the unknown liabilities of doing business outside of their locale which happen to be international. (1) You should set up a separate USA corporation (in a mutually agreed upon State) and your contract is all done on a Corp to Corp 1099 basis, (2) Get general liability insurance of a sufficient amount, (3) Have sufficient assets put into an account of your corporation in the USA where the bank statements are regularly extracted by them and show you making regular Form 1120 tax payments to the IRS on the percentage you agreed to do transparently up front, (4) You fill out a W9 for them that is accurate/complete, (5) Your contract is at-will, (6) You file legit 940, 941, 1120, etc filings to the IRS and the State where you are incorporated. By "Vermont Only" I mean the conscious decision that some business executive might make that their company is only going to deal with vendors, sub-vendors, customers, employees, partners, affiliates, and usage of services with people and enterprises that are all fully in Vermont for where they live, where they work, the services & interactions they have, and that they'll expect that any of their own vendors, sub-vendors, employees, and other affiliates are likewise all in Vermont. Thus, it eliminates all risks of ever having any interstate commerce liabilities for their corporation. Now if they get on some video-sharing website to get advice or market themselves (like KZbin) that's outside of Vermont then they'd be violating this risk protection policy of theirs. This "Vermont Only" example may seem like a laughable absurd joke. But so are the standard excuses made for "USA Only" as I personally have seen up-front thousands of opportunities where the doors slammed on USA persons who were millionaires, willing to incorporate & jump through all sorts of hoops to protect their customers on liabilities as a contractor doing IT work IF they would be allowed to do the work outside the USA.

I work for a US company but through an outsourcing company. The payments are so so low compared to the rates paid in the US. I’m getting $4.6 an hr😮 With no paid lunch time! Why am I in!? Because I need some experience working with an US company. I’m still figuring out how to get a job directly so I can make at least $20-25.
@SupportAdventureGlobal Жыл бұрын
We're sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately, many outsourcing companies can be exploitative and pay low rates to their employees. We recommend that you do your research and try to find a good outsourcing company that pays fair rates, or consider applying directly to companies for employment opportunities. Gaining experience working with a US company is valuable, but it's important to ensure that you are being compensated fairly for your work. Don't settle for low rates and poor working conditions. Keep striving towards your goal of earning $20-25 per hour and don't be afraid to pursue other options to achieve your career goals.

They cut it because if they're hiring from a foreign country, there will be an abundance of candidates from said country that are willing to take the low wages which to them might seem very decent compared to their other options.

I’m a U.S citizen who due to unexpected family circumstances, had to come to Central America. I’m looking to work for a US company but work remote from Central America. I do have a US address, US bank account and US mobile # I’m in healthcare. Any suggestions??
@SupportAdventureGlobal Жыл бұрын
Having a US address, US bank account, and US mobile number will help you in your search for remote work with a US company. One suggestion would be to look for remote job opportunities in the healthcare industry. You can start by researching companies that offer remote positions in your field and checking their job listings. You can also reach out to recruitment agencies and staffing firms that specialize in healthcare to see if they have any remote job openings that fit your skills and experience. Another option would be to create a profile on online job platforms that offer remote opportunities. These platforms can connect you with companies looking for remote workers, and you can apply to jobs directly through the platform. Remember to highlight your skills and experience in your job applications and emphasize your ability to work remotely from Central America. Best of luck in your job search!
