why do we need to do this instead of just running the server on some remote machine or using an OpenVPN/WireGuard config provided by a dedicated VPN provider?
@RockyinReelTime2 күн бұрын
Because while using a dedicated VPN provider traffic is still going to look like VPN traffic to a company firewall. You can test this by using an OpenVPN connection and checking your IP stats, you’ll notice in the ISP section will be a B2B company that services large software VPN companies. So this will look strange. In addition to that, while using a software VPN, you’re using shared IP addresses and they’re blacklisted by company firewalls 99.99% of the time. Using your own VPN server, it’ll look like the traffic is coming from the ISP router of your home network
@excallibur45742 күн бұрын
@ true if you pick the wrong VPN but I just toyed around with mullvad & protonVPN today & most of their servers worked fine for me. you could probably spoof the identity of the server if you host it yourself on AWS/Azure too, they'd just see you're routing traffic through there

Creating your own site to site VPN network uses port forwarding. For customer service call center type jobs, you’ll usually have a Cisco access point device (or some other brand) of some sort, you then plug this to the travel router while the travel router is plugged to your ISP router abroad

@RockyinReelTime8 сағат бұрын
Wire to wire is more stable and slightly faster, almost unnoticeable to the human eye though. The reason I prefer the wired connection is because through Wi-Fi repeater, occasionally it can lose connection and you don’t want your company laptop to try and connect to nearby networks or the actual network you’re using abroad while on the company VPN

Thank you so much this video was very helpful! I had one quick question regarding the travel router: If I already set up my travel router with NordVPN and I do end up buying the dedicated IP package as well would I need to set it up again? And, if so, do you have a video with the steps to set that up with the dedicated IP? My work uses a a 2FA and its own VPN, would that still work with just the travel router?

Thank you for the video! I've seen a few other videos similar to yours, and though yours is almost 19 minutes long, my gut instinct told me that you're speaking honestly, I can trust you, and you're authentic. That's the big green flag for me, so thanks! Question: I've seen videos of the setup process, and I know it's a "set it and forget it" process. My question is do you have to leave the computer connected, as well? Or once it's programmed, the computer is no longer needed? I will definitely be trying this out. I have a house that's being rented out, and I trust the tenant to not mess with this after I've set it up. I plan to get a regular remote call center job because I have WFH phone experience already, and then try it over a long weekend in Mexico, being that it's the closest, cheapest place to test things out. And if it doesn't work, I'll just call out sick, and go home. I really do appreciate the video and am going to check out some other of your videos. You probably have a sub.

What if your company uses a VPN? Would it not cancel out the VPN you're using and disclose your true location? Some companies use zscaler, cisco, etc for VPN and it's installed as software on the laptop that you have to login and auth. I'm wondering how this setup will work against what you're describing. How will a site to site vpn assist in hiding that person's location?
@RockyinReelTime9 ай бұрын
Hey I'm pretty sure you might have sent me an email already which I replied. If it wasn't you, then I'll explain it here: When you use a personal VPN setup like a site-to-site VPN with routers at home and while traveling, you're creating a secure tunnel from your current location back to your home network. This initial connection masks your true location by making all your internet traffic appear as if it's coming from your home (it also uses hardware not software). However, when you then connect to your company's VPN through software on your laptop, this creates a "nested" VPN connection. Here’s how it works in layers: First Layer (Site-to-Site VPN): This is your personal VPN connection from your travel router back to your home router. It serves as the first layer of encryption and masks your real geographical location by assigning you an IP address from your home network. Second Layer (Company VPN): When you launch your company's VPN software (like Zscaler or Cisco), it creates another secure connection from your laptop to your company's network. This second layer is where your work-related data gets encrypted again, ensuring secure access to your company's resources. So, does one VPN cancel out the other? Not exactly. Instead, they work in tandem: Your site-to-site VPN ensures that your initial internet connection (including initial checks by websites or services) sees you as connecting from your home country or location. This is particularly useful for bypassing geo-restrictions or maintaining a consistent IP address location. Your company VPN then secures the specific traffic between your laptop and your company's resources, irrespective of the underlying internet connection. This layer is focused on securing your work-related activities and doesn't necessarily disclose your true, physical location because the traffic between your device and the company network is encrypted and tunneled. If you have any more questions or need clarification, feel free to book a consultation so that I'll explain in detail or help you set up your routers

@RockyinReelTime10 ай бұрын
Hey! Most likely, your company's VPN might provide a high level of anonymity, not even allowing IP address finder websites to detect the VPN's IP address. Also advanced VPN configurations can block scripts or requests that try to detect your IP address. When you use the solution I speak of in the video though, you don't have to download any software and you can use your own IP address by using the routers to rerout the request. Thus it appears as if you're working from home. Just don't ever use your work computer to connect to a network while abroad, always make sure to connect yo your router while traveling or in another country.

Do I connect my WiFi6 router to the ISP-provided modem or router? The ISP-provided modem only has one ethernet port, and the router has one internet and 3 ethernet ports. If I use this router, should I remove the ISP-provided router? 2. Also, should I use the LAN or WAN ports on the WiFi6 router? 3. On the travel router, how would I connect the ethernet cables? From the ISP-provided destination modem to the travel router? Or ISP-provided destination router to the travel router? 4. Not sure if you know the answer to this, I connected to the WiFi6 router for the first time, and now every internet webpage says "Internet connection is not secure." How would I be able to fix this issue? 5. Lastly, would it make sense to get a static IP address? I ask since how would you know if a dynamic IP addresss changes when you're traveling? Thank you!!!!

Great Video! I went to check my internet speed. It looks like the scale is out of 100. Can you expand on the recommendations at 2:18 in the video?
@RockyinReelTime9 ай бұрын
Basically the upload speed of the ISP router(your Verizon, Spectrum, At&T etc) to which the server is connected is crucial in a Site-to-Site VPN setup with two GL.iNet routers because it determines the maximum speed at which data can be sent from the server(the Flint w/ 4 antennas) to the remote site (the Beryl that you take with you). This is important for ensuring efficient and smooth communication between sites, especially for applications that require real-time data transmission or large file transfers. A higher upload speed will significantly enhance your performance, reduce latency, and improve the overall user experience by allowing quicker access to resources hosted at the server's site. Conversely, a lower upload speed can become a bottleneck, limiting the effectiveness of the VPN connection and potentially causing delays or disruptions in data flow between the two sites. Usually to work abroad I found that most people that are just sending emails, reporting, Excel, coding, streaming KZbin videos and video calls on Zoom and Teams are good with an upload speed of a bare minimum of 30Mbps. Thus faster upload speed at home (where Flint is connected)= faster download speed abroad (where you use travel routers)
@Elia2688 ай бұрын

Hi Basam! To answer your question, I tell clients with company phones to keep it on airlplane mode and only turn on Wi-Fi and remain connected to the travel router if they need to take it on a trip. Also If you have an iPhone as your company phone as well as personal, you can sign into your iCloud account on your company phone, adjust call settings to forward a call from phone 1 to 2 and when you receive a call on your company phone, it'll be forwarded to your personal. So you can theoretically leave your company phone at home while taking your personal. I believe the newer iOS updates allow for this.

@@marquismukesel9840 You would need the travel router shipped to you. Keep in mind it’ll be double the price to receive here in Brazil because of import taxes. But as long as you have someone in the states who can receive the Flint router and set it up, the setup can be done remotely. Your person in the states would have to be on the Zoom call as well, plus their internet needs to meet the requirements. I would highly suggest going back to get your company laptop though as it’s going to be hard to ship it here and overall the logistics are harder

The Flint acts as a server you connect to, thus making this whole setup your own VPN. If you use just the travel router you nee to use OpenVPN and use a 3rd party VPN which is still very detectable because you'd be using Nord's servers for example and many of their IPs are blacklisted because they are known by many commercial firewalls

There’s a work around for bypassing VPN blocks in certain countries. You can certainly use a VPN connection with the router but it’s better for personal use and not working abroad. Yes you can have multiple devices connected to this. While you’re abroad however, you’re limited to the upload speed you have at home. Your download speed abroad is what your upload speed is at home. So if you want more devices or a lot, then make sure to have very fast upload speed at home. I recommend at least 150Mbps if you want to have 7+ devices connected to it but if you want just 2-3 maybe 4, 35-50Mbps of upload speed should be fine

Since I have dual citizenship (Panama) I’m thinking it’s a great opportunity to move back to Panama and save money even though they require you to be in the US (location hidden by site to site VPN). BUT, I’m torn between that and Mexico. MX seems like an option because of the simple residency requirements. @@anisebeirut1475 I setup Spectrum routers all the time, like literally every week. It’s one of the most common Internet providers in the United States. What’s the model of your spectrum router ? You’ve missed a step or likely have done something wrong. It’s also impossible for me to diagnose or know what next step to take through comments but to also answer your other question, you only need to get two routers, a travel router like the Slate AX or Beryl and a Wi-Fi 6 router like the flint (to connect to the Spectrum router). I haven’t encountered a Spectrum router that doesn’t allow you to do port forwarding yet, so yours likely does. Also how are you testing this? If you’re testing at home you’re going to always see your home IP address when connected to the travel router, you must test in a different location or at least use a hotspot. Testing at home will always give you the same IP address and make it look like you’ve configured it correctly.
