I worked 2-4 days a week depending on the year/rotation/time of semester. I probably wouldn’t have if I could afford it but I did fine!

I went thru THREE years in NURSING program here at California State University East Bay for LPN TO BSN. While workimg 32 hours per week. I am in last semester now. Best advice I can give is two things: 1. Never ask or fear how it cam be accomplished by asking; How will I do this? Instead, dive into it and ask at the end; how did I do that? Lol 2. TIME MANAGEMENT

Thank you for sharing!! Some of my students could learn something from this

@@CrosbyTheNomadNurse I have learned comfidence and descent rest is everything. I know a couple of things about how confidence or lack there of effects performance. I boxed for 14 years. Its 90% mental and 10% physical. But within the physical component of the game. You must give it beyond your all. Nusring school is much the same !

Nursing school is the same in some ways especially controlling emotions and doubt!

Thank you for posting this! I'm thinking about working one shift a week to stabilize my savings instead of eating through it while going through nursing school. I think the best way to do this is in-home care because you typically only have one patient so there is down time for studying especially on night shifts when the patient is sleeping. The work is a lot less stressful than many other hospital or long term care facilities.
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think that would probably be much easier than like ER or something that takes all your energy

I was working 40+ hours a week before school. I now work only 24h/week and sometimes even that is too much. Next semester (level 4) I will be working 2 12h shifts PER MONTH. For me SUPERIOR time management is key, and I study every second I get. I use books (textbooks, NCLEX review, Success series review books, apps (ATI mentor), websites (elsevier.com). Use anything that you can on the go. I study in weird places, waiting in the long line at Walmart or the bank, at the doctors office. For me idle time is study time. I record my lectures and play them back while in the car driving to clinical (I have a hour drive to clinical 2x per week) WISH LIST - I wish my teachers would put them into pod casts! ;) My husband and family all know that when the semester is running I'm in one of 4 states - Sleeping, Studying, School, or Work. Sometimes I make it to family functions with books in hand, sometimes I dont go at all. Funny thing about family - they will be there when your done and walking the stage. Same thing with friends, and if their not then they were not there to support you in the first place! Find your good independent study space. For me it's the hallway of the school, starbucks, IHOP, public library. I need a little distraction or I'll get bored and go look at Pintrest (the greatest and most fun time sucker of all!!) If you know you get distracted put blockers up. Signs at home that your studying, put your headphones in and listen to Mozart, If you need your computer put up moving scenery like Crosby does for his vids (I use snow falling - it's pretty and not much to look at for long). Whatever works!! Good luck guys.... OH... and nursing students STICK TOGETHER! The time for competition to get into the program is done. Support your fellow colleges and help each other get to the finish line!! I'll get off my soap box now because Its now nearing 9am I have to drive to campus and go study before my 230pm lecture.

Aw thank you so much! I really do live by my "coachings" I'm here to help my fellow students out. We have to stick together. If we do.. the hard days are not so hard at all!

I’m glad that I did, but I limited my hours and worked as a Cna so it helped a lot when I had questions on school with my doc and other nurses. But prolly one of the rare places that would let you study, so home work, clinical prep, and sleep as long as everything was done and we had coverage. My advice if you have to work, make note cards and think about it all the time you can, and for the love of god only work the minimum hours you need to keep it down
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse6 жыл бұрын
I was just telling someone that working as a CNA or Tech transitions really well to nursing school. I just don't want anyone working so much they can't study
@rpm5116 жыл бұрын
Exactly, a nice PRN job in a hospital one or two days a week to get you experience when you can, but always put studies first 8D. Some of the best nurses i know with patient care started at the bottom somewhere, i think ever nurse should have to intern as a CNA for their first semester when they're doing dosage and what not

Great video man. As a 27 year old guy considering going into nursing, appreciate this info, if i can work full time through my pre-reqs then tone it back for my ADN program, think that would be the best way to go.

My wife and I got into nursing school together, part time program, 2 yr 8 mo. We both work 40 hrs/week. We both have BAs and careers from prior college; but we are going to change to nursing. It’s gonna be tough, but we should be ok! And we don’t have have an option to quit our jobs.

Man if you had GI bill then you probably had it made. GI covers tuition then you pocket thousands of dollars in grants, scholarships, and student loans. Unfortunately for me I dont have GI and I'm having to take off work for class and somehow still afford rent and car payments. I dont know how I'm gonna do it
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was very fortunate. But I promise it's possible to do it while you work. Don't let it get you into a negative mindset. Just accept that's the way it is and dont look back and kick ass
@carriecongo76166 жыл бұрын
Crosby thanks for your service. My husband served as well. It is a well deserved bill for our veterans and service members. They do not have it made. They all served their country and this is the least we can do for them. Believe me there is no pocketing of thousands of dollars.

Thank you!! Yeah no way did I have it made, I always just barely got by. It made me a better person though

Another great video! I didn’t realize you served. Thank you for your service! I’m using my GI Bill, too and I said exactly what you said. Money will come later and it’s okay to be monetarily struggling now. Did you ever consider rejoining as a Nurse Officer or did you always want to be a civilian Nurse? I’m debating paths because I miss the service, but am focusing on school right now because I have a few years before I will even get my BSN. Luckily, I have my AA and have wasted enough time that I know for sure I want Nursing to be my career ☺️

You're Welcome!! That's awesome thank you as well. I have considered it, because I have 8 years of service and I would hate to lose it. I was looking at the reserves recently but i want to get stabilized teaching first.

Crosby Steen, MSN, RN I’m sure that would be incredibly helpful to your students! And they would have the video to refer back to for clarification if they needed it. I would definitely run your ideas by your students for feedback to see what would be most helpful before you land on a concrete plan.

So I am an active duty sailor currently on shore duty ( won’t deploy for 3 years) just got accepted to nursing school. The school is evening and weekends. It consists of 4 semesters 20 weeks long. I am also a husband and father of 2 girls. One 3 year old and one 9 mo old. My work schedule is mon-fri 6am-2:30 pm. School schedule is 3 nights a week 5-10 pm with clinical every other weekend. I think it is very do-able. Thoughts, tips?
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse5 жыл бұрын
SO you def have a unique situation. To be honest it's going to be extremely taxing on you, BUT I think it's def doable if you focus. The good thing is you won't deploy and that will give you time. Are you thinking of staying in?
@justinmacmillan5315 жыл бұрын
The Nomad Nurse the military has taught me alot of time management skills so I think I will be able to find 5 hours of study tomorrow daily at least while maintaining a good balance of time with my family. As far as staying in, I'm doing this so that I can get out. I'll be at my 8 year mark and I'm using TA to pay for my nursing degree. I plan on using my GI bill down the road for an advanced practice degree
@justinmacmillan5315 жыл бұрын
The Nomad Nurse the military has been good but I've always wanted to do nursing. I'm also sick of deploying and leaving my family for long periods of time so we decided I would attend nursing school on shore duty to maintain income and benifits while staying student loan debt free

Can you work while getting a msn or dnp? Also, I’m currently a nursing student interested in being an np. Is it true that I will have to get a doctorate after a certain time and not able to get an msn?

Yeah you can work, it's actually kind of understood that you will work and do NP or MSN. I'm not really sure about the requirement for DNP. I've heard that rumor for awhile
