Before I switched to hybrid, I used hvo in 1.6 diesel vw golf . I found real diesel had about 80 km average more range per tank fill and a little more poke under acceleration. I used it for about 9 months. Great alternative. You won't notice much if town driving. Long distance you'll see a slight difference in range. That was on 141 golf. Great review Bob.

HVO seems to be making a bit of a comeback! I ran my VW T5 for a while on it. (Eco Warrior days LOL) Bad end though I got water in my home tank and did a bit of damage to my fuel pump etc. I also ran a mix of Aldi veg oil in my T4. Keep the reviews going Bob! Great to see you back.

Loving your uploads Bob, and it's really interesting to know about the range of fuels that are available, as we are in such an uncertain world in regards to what to go for electric, desiel, petrol, or hybrid cars and how the infrastructure is so not there for the electric cars as the time element of charging is a complete pain as unless you have circ 50k and more to get decent range and I really wish manufacturers would give you the real range not a made up figure from there simulators, keep doing what you do as your a true legend Bob so glad you back, peace brother 🙏❤️

My father in law ran his '96 megane for years mixing veg oil from Lidl in with diesel. It was half the price of diesel at the time and he saved a fortune. The shops seemed to have copped onto it though and only allowed a few litres per transaction after it started to get out of hand.

If there were any technical problems, car manufacturers would be the first to limit warranties so the fact they haven’t answers that. Interesting alternative especially with the unpredictable EV market at the moment.

I havent heard much about HVO, thanks Bob for educating me on it! If it was €0.10 a litre cheaper it would get more traction. I suppose its up to those to choose do they want Dino juice or vegetable oil to power the vehicle in the end.

My issue also is price and supply line , hvo is big in Mexico and some parts of the us such as Kansas for farm vehicles but 100% of the bio fuel is made locally , unfortunately up north it’s not really worth farmer’s growing crops unless there is a farmers inventive and balanced production to prevent other food prices runs for local production than imports I’m all for it

I use to run Ford fiesta that I ran on cooking coil about 15 years ago. Straight simple diesel with used cooking oil. I was saving for my first house at the time and did alot of Travelling for work. Use to collect the Used cooking oil from local takeaways. Time was the best filter for letting all the fat settle to the bottom. Ran two tank system started up in Diesel and then switch over to cooking oil added in some diesel to the cooking oil to help with the lost of power. Also tried it on old merc but it smelled like fish shop Sort of became hobby for bit. Bit of dirty job with filtering Now I run electric car. To note DONT!! run this any TDI HDI any type modern ish engine

Research shows that HVO is not sustainable at scale. We should therefore be limiting its availability, not increasing it as Certa are planning on doing. More needs to be done to incentivise people to move to EV’s. The cost of EV’s as well as the horrendously poor infrastructure is not helping the situation.

HVO is not meant to replace diesel completely but it’s there as a choice. We can’t just transfer over the EV so must find low-carbon solutions right now

I totally agree with you. However, research shows that the eco credentials of HVO are very much dependent on certain factors. It might be a short term solution but the biggest producers of HVO should be investing more in helping improve the infrastructure for EV’s.

So skoda diesel cars manufactured from May 2021 can run on HVO. What about my 2013 skoda Octavia 1.6 diesel?

Old Peugeot's could run on old cooking oil etc, trouble is Governments increased the tax so no saving. The biggest issue is that the WEF have decreed that ICE and ZERO emission at exhaust, so this fuel will be same as regular Diesel. It only "saves" 90% emissions from production. Diesel is a low pollutant anyway. I will stick to cheapest diesel.

Diesel a low pollutant? Im not sure your lungs would agree. Lower in Co2 yes but higher in particulate matter i.e smog or the stuff that gives you respiratory diseases. Running a Euro6 with DPF & SCR addblue type system to reduce NOx gases considerably lower this. However your still going to have particulate matter pollutants at lower engine operating temps, startup and during DPF regeneration. The stuff that Volkswagen Audi Group like to torture monkeys with 🙈🙉🙊

If you look carefully at the whole life well to wheel analysis of HVO fuel the CO2 savings are marginal if any. It must be understood that paraffinic fuels such as HVO have a lower density to fossil fuels. Not energy density but actual fuel density. Therefore when you run this fuel at a medium load or more 10-20% more fuel will need to be pumped through to maintain the same power output. This will mean more exhaust gases needing more adblue solution and of course overall more consumption of HVO. In construction activities such a pumps and power generators for example it makes little sense than greenwashing and large UK construction companies have started to turn away from this fuel. If I was to use a paraffinic fuel like this I would recommend a Shell GTL (gas to liquid) their claims are more honest and the fuel is tested on proper test cycles not made up test cycles. HVO has a habit of claiming 90% reductions, from my experience of testing these fuels against real test cycles it is considerably less.

@@Id3fornow... you could but by putting it in vehicles you are transporting it hundreds or thousands of miles away from source. Just to get a premium for the fuel. When you could just supply it locally for district heating, agri vehicles etc. But that would mean lower profit margins. In many instances we found it may not of been HVO fuel but regular fossil fuel being passed off as HVO as their was not enough distributed supply chain of HVO. There is no real regulation of this fuel and until there is I would caution buying it on the basis of thinking the fuel is environmentally beneficial.

Ah, “green” the magic moneymaking word … That’s what makes me instantly suspicious together with the fact that “quite by chance” it costs exactly the same as diesel and petrol. Both of the latter have to undergo an extensive extraction, transport and refinement process which this HVO doesn’t, just the last refinement part. Yes folks, a distinct smell of rat there …
