The best way I could describe sight, images and colors to a blind person is as different strengths and concentrations of light combined to make images of what's in front of you. Tommy said he has the ability to detect light so that's something he might be able to connect with sight. Those blurry light forms or shadows, he should imagine them becoming sharper and more varied.

From an objective point of view is actually impossible to describe a color to a blind person, all this things that they mention were completely subjective
@Predated2
@Predated2 5 жыл бұрын
not really though. A lot of colors are objectively linked to something. For example: red is linked with heat, love, anger, passion and danger(its also one of the easiest to guess). Green is linked to freshness, safety and nature(although, I guess nature would be a dead give away in this case). Blue is linked to calmness and serenity. Sure, the personal feelings might be subjective, but there are objective feelings linked to a color.
@scottdavie7057
@scottdavie7057 5 жыл бұрын
@@Predated2 Even the "personal feelings" aren't really subjective. The way our brains visually interpret a certain wavelength might be different (so blue might look like what they consider red to someone else, etc). However, our brains respond to wavelengths, so colours with longer wavelengths like red evoke thoughts/feelings of passion - anger, love, while colours like blue with shorter wavelengths are more soothing and calming, even if we don't see them the same. I'm curious if people with cortical blindness (blindsight) who don't experience vision due to a problem with the brain, rather than with the eyes (but can still be aware of movement, obstacles, etc. even though they don't "see" it) would have emotional responses to colours.

I would describe color as different musical notes. After all, sound and light are both created by waves, and all waves have similar properties. Different colors mean different light frequencies. Different notes mean different sound frequencies. I would describe shape and dimensions of an object as the structure and length of the notes, and the brightness of something as the volume of the music. Sight and hearing are very different, yet they have similar properties because they're both created by waves (sound waves, light waves).That's kinda like how taste and smell have similar properties, yet very different, because taste and smell are both created by chemical interactions. Smell would be like hearing, taste would be like sight. You can smell things all around you and behind you, but you can only taste things that are only in front of you. However, taste gives us more detail much faster about something compared to smell. That's the best I can do though to explain sight 😞

i think the best way to describe color to a blind person is like saying how its the same with pitch and frequency. you can lower the pitch or raise the pitch of a sound but its still the same sound, the same way with color. an object might have a different color, but its still the same object and everything is the same except for that one aspect.

I would describe the concept of colours to a blind person using an analogy of musical notes. Some notes work together, like chords, they are consonant. Other colours clash, they are dissonant. Put together in a certain way they can be beautiful, or carry emotional connotations or make a piece of art, or music. A colour wheel would be something like a circle of fifths.

Color is a visual tone intensity mixture. Simplified, just like auditory for example there are people with quiet deep voices, people with loud high voices and everything in between, that's how visually there are materials emitting or reflecting for example dark red color, or bright violet, or any combination of, or other color and intensity in between. PS: A reflection is just echo.

I got them all right. The 2nd was maybe the most difficult, as I narrowed it down to blue or purple. I went with purple since had it been blue I was confident that there would have been more descriptions than just what she said. The third one was super-easy because he kind-of cheated by saying "earthy" and "people". A decent way to describe brown -even if you're blind- is that it's generally a _physical_ combination of all colors, such as if they were dyes or paints (this is called subtractive color mixing, and theoretically would result in black, but not typically in real-life unless you used a lot of darker or bluish color). In that sense it's really mucky/dirty, and that's another descriptive word he didn't use to describe it either which is quite a dead giveaway. Description for white was very good in my opinion. Very well done without using any particularly cheaty words. Only thing annoying is that white isn't a color by some people's definition, since it doesn't have any color in it, just like black or grays - they're achromatic. Achromatic is a useful way to describe black, white or grays. Red's description was a bit lacking because I think a key aspect of it is that it's considered intense, and sometimes even violent. It was still pretty good though, but "warm, happy, positive emotion" isn't something that I've heard people associate with red at all. General emotion, or anger or love, I have heard though. These are all just social constructs though, not anything scientific, except perhaps certain aspects of brown (mucky/mixed/natural), white (bright, pure), black (dark, pure), gray (neutral), and maybe a couple of others.

Quite interesting to read the comments. Even people with sight (I presume most can see) disagree of who described the colours poorly and who described well. The first one, the yellow one, I was first guessing orange until he mentioned sour. I'd also guess blue at the second one, the purple one. The third one, the brown one, I guessed green until he mentioned that one can find it in people but then switched over to brown since that also fit with earthy. The fourth one, the white one, I initially thought white, but when she mentioned natural I started to lean towards cyan, teal or light blue and stuck with that until the end. The last one, the red one, I first thought red since it's warm, but I did not really agree with that it is happy or gives positive emotions but stuck with my guess and was certain when she mentioned love for the first time.

This is so interesting! Thanks for this video. (For red, I would have said angry, sexy, fast, glamorous, etc. I would have thought "red lipstick," "cherry red sleek car," "angry/embarrassed red-face," rather than "red valentine.") How funny that we have such strong associations with colour. And I hate the colour brown, but I recognized it from its description--which sounded so lovely.

Instead of describing, I believe the best possible analogy for colours is sounds. Since both sounds and colours are about frequency of waves(one waves of sound, the other waves of light); there is a certain similarity between them. With use of technology, theoratcially this similarity can be used to help blind people experience a version of colours.

Hi Tommy! You can imagine colors like you are experiencing (in your case it’s feeling) different shapes. Colors are just another kind of properties of things, but you don’t feel them, but just see them through your eyes if they are open and there is light. If you put shapes together, it may be kinda like putting colors together. So if you put pinches on a smooth ball, you can feel a pinchy ball. And if you put red and yellow together, you can see an orange color. I don’t know if it helps, because I can‘t imagine not being able to see as well, but colors are properties of matter just like shape, smell and for example height. So if you ask why two different things can be the same color: two completely different things can also be the exact same height! And you can also build a snowman made of poo and it will be the exact same shape as one made of snow 😃😃😃

How I like to explain color is: Light is made of all colours, an object reflects only a part of the light, then the eye cathes the reflection and the brain translates, so as of now our language can not transmit what other people see/think so any colour can be any colour as my red might be your blue

As a sighted person, I'm guessing what they're describing too... 1st Person - My guess was pink as well, but it turned out to be yellow. 2nd Person - My guess was purple, which was correct, "Somber" is what made me think purple and not blue. 3rd Person - My guess was either brown or green, he didn't give a lot to go off of, but when he said people, I thought brown more than green. 4th Person - My guess was white, but some of what she was saying was throwing me off. Yellow came to mind, but that contrasted other parts of what she said. 5th Person - My guess was red, she explained it well.

When I want to describe color, I think of a little story. Like yellow: I'm walking through an open field, and I can turn my face up and feel warmth on my face and arms. Or red: red is angry, it bursts like a balloon that's been popped, and is a very, very hot color. The white description in this video was very similar to how I would probably describe it, but I would probably recall an event in my life or two where white was a key color (baptism, rituals).

To be fair Tommy, I think most sighted people could get most of these wrong too. When we're talking about how colors make us feel, it could be different for everyone. For instance, I was thinking about Orange when the color to guess was Yellow. But as always, great content, and very entertaining. Thank you!

I describe red as not anger but excitement, and like the tension you feel when you flex a muscle for awhile like lifting heavy objects. Like hyperactivity and mania, like warmth when you sit in front of a fireplace. White to me is always the sterile smell of bandaids for some reason.
