US should have gone younger by adding Mark Howe, Tom Rowe Mike Fidler upfront and Reed Larson on D. Could have used Bobby Sheehan upfront.

I graduated HS near Boston in 1973. There was for the first time some talent and depth in what now would be the U18 and U17 levels. By the time the 1976-77 NCAA season started there were 3 HOF players NCAA aged in Howe, Langway and Mullen. You had future NHL All Star game participants in Mike O'Connell, Reed Larson, Paul Holmgren and Mark Johnson. There was depth and talent.

Made a new posting just now where I go into detail about the young talent pool of US players. When you get a chance let me know what you think.

Yet they lost to a relatively mediocre Czechoslovakia team and needed an empty net goal to assure beating Team USA.

Come on! Canada have 650000 hockey players! USA have 500000 hockey players! CzechRepulic have 100000 players! Russia have under 80000 hockey players! Finland 73000 hockey players! Sweden only 65000 hockey players! Canada lost badly in 2006 olympics! Little Sweden won in 2006! Canada Ten times More players than Sweden and you can not beat them! CzechRepulic have 100000 players! Canada 7 times More players than CzechRepulic and Canada losing! Auston Matthews have scored 54 goals in 63 games this season! In 1980s NHL 8 goals per game! Today under 6 goals per game! If Matthews had played in 1982 he would had scored over 100 goals easily beating Gretzky's 92 goal record! Ovechkin ERA only 5,3-6 goals per game! If Ovechkin had played high scoring 1980s he would had scored over 1200 goals easily! Russia have under 80000 hockey players! Canada and USA should have 15 guys today who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin!

Rainer be thankful the Northern US states don't have the interest in hockey of Canada angle your Finland. If we did we would be #1 in the World.

Lol, Chevrier insulted US Hockey by saying people didn't want them in because they would be embarrassing The Canada Cup...lol.

Pretty insulting description of Team USA. For a country that was an embarrassment to the CC Event they played the Finalists competitively. Lost to Canada 4-2 with Canada needing an empty net goal to ice the game and then surprising Czechoslovakia 4-4. Would have been an interesting Canada Cup had they decided to go with half a team of strictlly NCAA Aged Players for the 1976-77 season. G - Reece - LoPresti - Baker (Union) D - Larson (UMinn) - Milbury Chartraw - Langway (UNH) Nyrop - Sargent Roberts - Noris Jensen - Ftorek - Holmgren Fidler - Howe - Talafous Gilbertson - Sheehan - Rowe Williams - Bennett - Ahern Debol- Miller Baker, Larson, Langway, Roberts, Howe, Holmgren, Rowe, Jensen, Fidler Miller and Debol were all NCAA aged though only Baker, Larson, Langway, Miller and Debol played NCAA in 1976-77. Of those players born between 1955-57 Larson, Langway, Howe and Holmgren would appear in NHL All Star Games. Baker would become the 1st American Goalie to win a NHL Playoff Series since Frank Brimsek. Its clear that the group of eligible NCAA players (DOB 1955-58) were as talented as their peers from Czechoslovakia, Sweden and USSR. In fact if they had the infrastructure available to today's US Players they could have beaten all 3 in a best of 7 series.
