Canada's role in the wars it has fought has always been very understated, much like with other former British dominions. The UK receives most of the credit for what they do. So to go back and give attention to their merits is really doing an honorable service to them, and giving credit where it is truly deserved. So thank you for giving credit to the brave Canadians who fought to victory in many conflicts, and their displays of heroism within.

Sadly even despite more information coming out, some still refuse to acknowledge the over seas, stating how we all were still under British power, the same arguments tend to happen with the War of 1812, Americans saying the war of 1812 was between America and Britain, not America and Canada, even though Britain was currently in a war with France during 1812.

Fun Fact: Canadian Armed Forces Special Forces unit "Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2)" hold the record for the most confirmed Taliban and Al-Qaeda kills by a special forces unit. This includes even more kills than units like the US Navy SEALS, British SAS, and German KSK.
@drunkenastarte5243
@drunkenastarte5243 5 ай бұрын
The Taliban's first encounter with Canadian troops: "Why are those bushes shooting at us?" Reason: our government was so beyond pathetic that during our first deployment, we did not have proper desert fatigues for our troops, so they landed into a desert warzone wearing their iconic forest greens... ...also, we initially sent in tanks with no AC units Most hilarious & insanely Canadian moment of our Afgan deployment: The Toronto Star, one of the country's largest & (supposedly) "most respected news papers" (insert copious laughter here), printed a front page story of high ranking Taliban commanders being captured by "American special forces" The problem? The troops were wearing their forest greens, and were in fact our own Canadian JTF2 operatives, because only in Canada are we so cheap as to send our military into a desert warzone without proper camo. (...and also, the Toronto Star have always been far leftist garbage, so this mistake was surprising to no one with a functioning brain!)
@Apache410
@Apache410 5 ай бұрын
@@drunkenastarte5243 Well the reason Canadian Forces were wearing green camo in the early years of the War on Terror was because for the last of the entire century, the Canadian Armed Forces were preparing for the Cold War, likely to be fought in Europe. This setting required Canadian forces to utilize the colour green, and Canadian troops fighting in desert environments was not expected. While its unfortunate Canadian service personnel had to wear green in the dessert in the early stages of the Invasion of Afghanistan, Canada did eventually adopt a desert camo pattern in 2002 for our troops. Also, you mentioned Canada sending in tanks with no AC units. Canada sent tanks to Afghanistan in 2006, and yes, they were unfortutnally without AC systems, as again, Canada was not expecting to send troops to desert environments, and our gear was more centered around defending Canada and Europe. Canadian Forces got around this hurdle however by primarily conducting operations at night or in the early morning, and avoiding the hottest times of the day (10am-6pm) if possible. Canadian tank crews also hydrated frequently and were equipped with cooling suits which did aid in their battle against the heat. Fortunatly in 2007, Canadian forces began utilizing tanks with better cooling systems. Now about your point about the Toronto Star, I don't know why you feel a mistake by a civilian news organization is a representation of Canada's ability to conduct war. I don't see any link between the capability of Canadian troops abroad and a local news paper back home. Overall, I'm sorry Canada was not perfect for you when we entered Afghanistan, however we quickly overcame our challenges and gave valued assistance to our allies.
@EvanCurrie
@EvanCurrie 5 ай бұрын
@@Apache410 That actually sums up Canada's entry into every war we've ever fought... we go in when we're needed, whether we're ready or not, and adapt on the fly. When we're done, we return to our homes and pound our swords back into plowshares... until the next time. The Americans used to do the same thing, up until WW2, it's actually a cultural thing we both share, despite the change in politics at the top.
@drunkenastarte5243
@drunkenastarte5243 5 ай бұрын
@@Apache410 Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for our armed forces up here - the gak they put up with from the idiots in Ottawa who give them bare scraps, half-century old equipment and the oft told jokes of "here's 30 bullets, don't waste any" is so embarrassing. (buuuuut, at least we got to finally retire the Sea Kings - though I recall reading something about them going potentially to the Coast Guard? >.< ) Our Forces members achieving what they do with what they have is nothing short of heroic & inspiring! Imagine what our military could achieve if they were given the proper tools & equipment to begin with, instead of so often having to make do with older equipment and/or other countries hand-me-downs. (*glares at British subs tragedy) I've had the honour of meeting & chatting up some of our Afgan vets. It's so insane the things they all had to put up with... (and not just the horror stories of the camel spiders!) The forest greens for example, considering we *do* technically have the Alberta Badlands, and that modern conflicts have long moved from the likely hood of Europe to the Middle East, it's been quite delinquent of our governments (of ALL political stripes) to wait until *after* committing to an active combat mission to realise, "oh shit, maybe our troops shouldn't look like a bunch of Ents from LotR?" At the very least, by the close of the 1st Gulf War, we should have been procuring some stocks of desert gear across the mid - late 90's as the 'scary Russia threat' was waning while the writing was on the wall for the Middle East & parts of Africa going down the poop-chute. Or how we send them into active warzones, ordering them to fly hazardous combat missions in CF-18's that are now what, 10-15+ years or so past their 'best before' date? Let alone so many of our helicopters that spend more time in maintenance than they do in actual service? The whole incident with the Toronto Star thing, more or less it was just a PR nightmare... a) that one of our supposedly most prestigious papers couldn't even identify our own troops, and, b) it was such a huge joke that "who else but Canada" would wear green to the sand theater ;-) Nothing to do with our troops at all, just that it was called out here at home for being such a slap in the face to the them at the time.
@notnath14
@notnath14 4 ай бұрын
@drunkenastarte5243 I don't have any love for the Toronto Star, but they're centre-left at most. The way news organizations work in Canada makes a far left news organization even less likely to succeed than far right ones, even if you take the commonly accepted (but highly contestable) opinion that left-leaning media dominates Canadian press organizations. I'd say myself that the most successful news media in Canada is pretty consistently moderate, and where television and radio tend to have more centre-left representation, print media (newspapers and magazines are so digitized now that print media is a bit of a misnomer, but got no better term) comprise of more right-leaning organizations, especially with the size of Postmedia Network, which is 66% owned by a hedge fund closely tied to the US Republican party. Don't disagree with anything you're saying about military funding, though. The Navy especially is in an absolute mess for a country surrounded by three oceans.

Fun fact Canada was first western country to declare war on the empire of Japan after they attack Pearl Harbor in fact they declared war the same day the US declared war a day later. Also fun fact the Canadian who signed Japan's surrender treaty eyes weren't working very well so he signed his name under the French line so they had to make new lines for everyone.

The Chinese actually had FAR worse casualties than the UN force, plus their 1951 invasion attempt into South Korea (after North Korea already tried in 1950) ended up being a bloodbath failure. The US, British Commonwealth and other UN forces even inflicted a blow on them that year called Operation Killer, which was meant to totally wipe out a section of the Chinese and North Korean armies so that the battlefield could be made more even for a counteroffensive. War truly is hell on earth. Thank Heaven we saved South Korea from the Kim family and their insanity.

Vimy Ridge was a defining moment in Canadian history for a few reasons: -it was the first instance where Canadian troops were under the control of a Canadian general, Arthur Currie -It was the first time that all four divisions of Canadian troops fought as one -This Battle was what got Canada more attention on the world stage, also being the moment where Canada became Canada and not just a British colony -With only a shoestring army of 100000, Canada took Vimy Ridge in 4 days in comparison to the French and the Brits, who with far larger armies, couldn’t take back after years -Canada owns Vimy ridge as a thank you from France, where the artillery craters have been overgrown by grass, and also gives Canada a kind of land border with France, though not officially recognized -While not related directly to Vimy Ridge, the Germans gave Canadian troops the nickname “Storm Troopers” Overall, out of the 100000 troops in Vimy Ridge, there were 12000 casualties, 3600 of which were fatal.
